Another help with a big emotion, like fear or sadness, is a familiar task. Like going to the bathroom, putting a toy away, solving a familiar puzzle, or finding a familiar book. This seems to help my son anyway. It's like it reminds him there is safety, not just fear or sadness.

Awesome insight! Absolutely! Sometimes a simple task like getting a drink, going to the bathroom, etc. can help a kid calm down. Then you can go back and tackle the original problem before the outburst. Thanks for the comment!

As a soon-to-be teacher, I'm always trying to find methods to help kids calm down emotionally since some tend to get emotionally overwhelmed, and I'm hoping to be that teacher that helps them control their feelings since I didn't have much of that growing up. Thank you so much for the lovely methods and I'll be sure to try them out. ^^

I love the pizza breathing visual as one of my sons loves pizza! My kids (well, teens now!) are autistic and I've found two things to be particularly valuable. Practicing strategies when they are calm so it's easier for them to remember them when they start to feel overwhelmed. And having visual reminders of the strategies handy that they can look at - so they don't have the added stress of trying to process what you're saying to them

These are such great age appropriate techniques. I love how you understand we don't always have lights bells or essential oil, especially in the moment. I have read for years books blogs and videos talk to psychologists etc but these strategies are so simple sticking out making me feel like I can make this work for my son and I. Thanks so much!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it and pray that your 6 year old finds the strategy useful. Remember to practice it many, many times when he is calm so when you need to use it, he knows exactly what to do and it is second nature to him. Feel free to stop by and enjoy some more our my content. Thanks for sharing how this video helped you.

Tried pizza breathing because it seemed awesome. Taught it when my son was calm. Practiced it when he was angry (trigger was that he couldn’t get the right video to play on tv). Didn’t want to try it and proceeded to kick objects in the room. I modelled it again and he got more angry. Eventually he calmed down on his own.

Thank you for sharing this story. I am sorry to hear things were difficult. Your story is very helpful as it illustrates a few important concepts. 1. Every child has his or her own best strategies for calming down. We need to help kids discover what those are so they have them to use when needed. It takes time but is well worth it. 2. We need to practice often when kids are calm just like you did. 3. These strategies are only to help calm a kid down initially. There is deeper heart work that needs to be done to move a child in the right direction. When we try to change behavior, all we get is temporary relief. When we focus on the heart, lasting change can happen. If you are open to Christian resources, you may enjoy a playlist I built on another channel titled Jesus, Help Me Parent at kzbin.info/aero/PLkZ5bW5OWmxqQj67w6DiOeMXqalIAupFj That playlist also has a helpful printable titled "Helping Your Child with Anger and Other Big Emotions" - bit.ly/AngerHelp ... I hope you find these resources helpful. Thanks for watching this video.

My son has trouble whole body listening and always find every part of him everywhere except on where he needs to focus. Yesterday I taught him to clasp hands and cross his legs when on floor or cross feet when on chair to restrict his urge to get busy. I just saw this video and feel like i did something sensible 😂

So glad it helped! Sounds like you had a good idea. It also sounds like your son could work on the heart quality of cooperation. Cooperation is following through on what I'm told to do instantly, completely, and cheerfully. While there are lots of ways to work on cooperation, I find a simple instruction routine can really help kids with this. Here's the link to a video on made about it. Hope it helps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYmpoaxqZq6Bas0

Do you have techniques for older kids like over 8? I know my child would not do these
@JesusHelpMeParent
@JesusHelpMeParent Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question! These are just a few of many strategies, and they can work with kids at any age though you may adapt them a bit to fit your kid's personality. For example, Pizza Breath helps kids understand how to breath, but an 8 year old may just need to do some deep breathing and not call it Pizza Breath. The KEY for kids to managing emotions is understanding 3 key skills - 1. recognizing when I am getting frustrated 2. being able to stop 3. making a plan for moving forward. This is not easy. This video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5DGh5SAgadorpI goes into more details on that. Additionally, when we are trying to help kids manage emotions, it usually helps to work on the positive side of their hearts by working on cooperation. Kids who develop a responsiveness in their hearts to cooperate with adults in their world tend to also grow in their ability to manage emotions. A great video resource I have is 5 Ways to Get Your Kids to Follow Instructions - bit.ly/5SimpleStepsNow - I'd grab that and start working on that as it will have a secondary effect of helping with emotions as well for many kids. Thanks for your question.

I have a special-needs daughter who is six years old and she gets upset I have tried using her tablet doing KZbin but I never knew there was a video that can help me with her she has a hard time expressing her feelings what can I do
@JesusHelpMeParent
@JesusHelpMeParent 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Without knowing lots of details, I can't get too specific, but here are a few thoughts. Every family needs a plan for managing emotions. Kids need lots of feeling language modeled for them. They need help learning feeling vocabulary and naming their feelings and the feelings they see expressed in characters in books and tv as well as in real life situations around them. They then need a plan for how to manage those emotions in a healthy way. I get into this topic in much more detail on another channel - Jesus, Help Me Parent. One of the videos there that might help is this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKKuc2hrncypj8k

Yes, sometimes we need to adjust the activity. Maybe find a different food or even consider calling it smelling a flower and blowing the petals off. Its important to practice these skills during calm times so we can use them when our kids are struggling. Thanks for your comment and let me know what you choose to go with. I'd love to hear!

Putting your head forward to calm down is questionable as it increases pressure on the spine and makes it harder to breathe. That increases blood pressure and initiates fight or flight.
@JesusHelpMeParent
@JesusHelpMeParent 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your insight, Joshua. We tried to offer a few different options for people to try with different kids and in different situations. I've used that one more to help a child who is visually overstimulated block out the visual stimulation and focus inward or when a group of kids are just overstimulated from an activity but not necessarily struggling with flight, fight, or freeze. For a kid who is more upset and possibly heading in that direction, I've had the child hold my hand, close his/her eyes, and breath (or do something else). Again, thanks for the thoughts. Glad to have you here.
