I developed lupus when my dog was one year old. He would alert me when I was having a flair up before I knew. He taught himself to be my service dog!

My service dog got me ice packs before I even realized I was soon having this certain dissociative episode that left me unconscious. He learned to do this because my spouse always got them for me when I was in this state. So one day my dog started doing the same, but before I had the episode, thus preventing many of them through his care with the ice packs. I muss my Rottweiler sooo much day and night since he died. He was somehow a part of me. 😢

This video was super helpful! Thank you for posting it! I'm starting to look into getting a service dog to help with my ADHD, anxiety, and depression, and maybe my sister's Autism since I'm going to be her primary caretaker when she's done with school. I'm in the early early early steps of the process right now, and your channel is really helpful!

Hey Lisa, I'm confident that the Psychiatric Service Dog is right for my medical condition. I think having this added protection from the ADA will be worth the effort. A Psychiatric Service Dog would enhance my quality of life immensely, as I have been legally disabled, with a invisible disability for 23 years now. I really appreciate your the videos & how your presentation.

I have trained my dobermans for years but this is first time as a emotional support. I have a high energy european doberman and I realize its more work and may not be the good choice. Shes fantastic so far but she barked today as another customer walked by with there dog.. She did go quiet when I gave her the comman word "quiet" so I am happy for that she is only 1 1/3 years old. Im 65 and on disability with PTSD so I am doing this self training. I may do it with my boston terrier for walmart jouney later when she gets older.

Wonderful video. My question is would a service animal benefit someone who has major depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, OCD, a major neck and shoulder impairment from a work injury that will never get any better its permanent damage? Whats your thoughts?

1st question: Can one of the services that the SD provide support for, an anxiety disorder and chronic depression? I take my SD (service dog) every where I go. She's never mad at me nor does she try an hurt me. She motivates me to get out of bed and start my day. 2nd question is isn't an Emotional support dog is a dog that brings comfort to groups of people. IE: Hospital settings, group homes, retirement centers. 3rd question: is there a centralized Registration for service dogs. 4th question do service dog have to be trained by a license dog trainer, or can the owner of the dog train them to their support duties?
@LisaGallegos
@LisaGallegos Жыл бұрын
1 - technically they have to be officially working or task trained. A task could be deep pressure therapy, or interrupting any behavior like tapping your foot, or nail biting. 2- that's a therapy dog, not an esa 3 - no centralized registration 4 - you can self-train, although it CAN be very challenging

I think it would be more beneficial to me to have a service animal... I have pretty severe ADHD/anxiety/PTSD. I cannot hold down a job. However, I don't really want to apply for disability either... Would I still qualify for a service dog if I am not on disability and try to have a job? O, also, I have a 2-month-old German Shepherd/Husky named Kiko. He is absolutely amazing, so smart, so loving. He has been responding very well to simple and basic obedience training that I know so far. Trying to teach myself more to get us both set up to be even happier and the best versions of ourselves together.

Yes - you don't have to be on disability. Here's a comment on further clarification I replied to someone else because I def caused some confusion! -- I should've clarified - you're not required by the ADA. I recommend having a letter regardless, for a service dog so you have a backup if needed ever. For example, let's say someone decided to sue you because of your service dog. Even if you had a really strong case proving you and your dog didn't do anything, if you don't have any medical letter already, it could be really hard from a legal standpoint to defend. This is also why I recommend having a training log to show (once again, just in case) that you really did do training. Also, a service dog isn't for everyone - even if you are considered disabled under the ADA, everyone's disability affects them differently. Talking to your medical professional is helpful to decide whether this is going to help you in the long run or cause you more stress. Finally, if you ever want to get a certification through an organization that is accredited under the ADI, most will require a letter. This is really only necessary for those who are traveling internationally with their service dog. Some people do decide to get a certification for their own confidence (even if they're not traveling internationally) and to have a community to lean on when problems arise; however, it's by no means necessary in the USA under the ADA as of today. I hope that clarifies a few things - I said it as a requirement because that's something I have to ask for (to protect myself legally as well) when helping teams get certified through the organization (atlas) I volunteer for.

hey Lisa thnak you for this vid , because since may of this year i have spent the last 3 and a half months training my dog to be well behaved , i found out as of yesterday morning that my 5 year old black labrador mix son is 100% legally allowed to be a emotioanl support dog , so i purchased a tactical vest harness more so like the kind of vest harness you would normally see law enforcement use with thier dogs and patches that say emotional support , i have autism spectrum disorder which is a disorder that effects the brain by attacking the brain it's self , so this is good news for me cause not only cause of my medical disability also cause he could be therapy dog for my mom's customers while she is at work , in which i feel would bring a lot of joy to them

I’ve got severe depression, severe anxiety/social anxiety, adhd, night terrors, insomnia, ptsd, sleep paralysis, and a bunch of chronic pain issues. If it would help me to have a psychiatric service dog, do I have to bring them with me everywhere I go? What if I’m having a good day and am sure that I will be ok? Does having a service dog mean that I have to bring them with me everywhere and all the time?

I trained my dog to help me with balance when we are walking. He helps me get up off of chairs. He only weighs about 20 lbs but is very strong. He also is my psychiatric help dog with my anxiety and depression. Is he a ESA or my service dog? I will be getting letters from both my medical doctor and my psychiatrist for my dog to be with me when i need him.
@LisaGallegos

I don’t know if 20lbs is safe for the dog to be a balance dog so I would consult your vet! But if he’s task trained to help with mobility that would technically be a SD - I’m just worried about the little guys joints and stuff

What about schizophrenia? Sometimes I think there are things in my apartment..or I get catatonic which I am not present. The other thing is I get lost or confused even in the same areas I go regularly. I find it hard to go out in public, because if I get lost, i have had to call my son and show him with my camera live vidoe where I am and have him tell me how to get home. I don't know if I am capable of looking after a dog that sheds a lot or barks to much as I am always afraid of being evicted as it is. Plus I have some kind of heart problem and low potassium and magnesium and need to go to the hospital. What would I do with my dog? Maybe I am better off on my own. If I forget to eat, it is only me who suffers...not an animal that depends on me. I don't know what my options are. I live on my own. I have been isolated since 2019 and my mental health is get worse. How would a dog know to tell me that the voices I am seeing or things I am seeing aren't real, if he can't see or hear them? I also cry for hours sometimes. Actually, I cry everyday. Wouldn't that stress out a service dog? Wouldn't he feel that he's not helping me and couldn't that do damage to the dog's mental health? I don't know, maybe it isn't fair to put a dog through all that. I am allergic to cats and small rodents, I am extremely allergic to their food. Sorry, I don't know what I am asking for.....if I knew how to fix myself, I would be better and would know what to do...sorry..

Hi! I mainly work with anxiety/ptsd/depression so full disclaimer - I am not an expert in schizophrenia. But a dog could help by alerting you whether there is a person there or not. For example, you point to the person, if they nose bump you, there is a person, if they don't, then there isn't. A few questions - if your needed to go to the hospital, would your son be able to watch the dog? You can also train a dog to respond to medical alerts by fetching the phone! Second, you'd need to find a dog who doesn't take on your stress. It is 100% doable but based off of what you're saying, you would probably want to find an already trained dog who is low shedding. You would also need a helper to ensure the dog is taken care of and fed - would your son or anyone else be able to assist with that? Feel free to send me a DM on instagram @liveapawsomelife and I can try to help answer any other questions you may have.

Airlines also will refuse service dogs over a certain size. They will accept crates in the larger sizes, but only at cargo terminals. And even if the dog is comfortable in the crate, they may declare the crate unacceptably small.

I consider every service dog in training an emotional support dog. A dog with the mindset of a future service dog is already able to bring emotional support. Others consider every pet as emotional support, which they really are and always have been, at least those animals living indoors, close with their handler. I sometimes have the feeling that people reach out to animals as emotional support, because animals are easier to deal with than humans. And if this is the case, the step towards animal abuse is a very small one. 🤔

So, when I see someone walking through the grocery store with a dog on a leash that is stopping to sniff everything I'm supposed to assume it's a service animal? What about the little fuzzy dog someone is holding in their arms as they shop the fresh veggies? I understand the need for service dogs, but I think it's abused by people who don't thin they will be challenged. I would like states to require proof of a dog's licensing as a true service dog or training permit...AND have restaurants and groceries have the guts to require it be presented!

It’s against the law to ask what disability the owner of the dog has according to ADA, some dog owners don’t have respect for other people but I have my very small long haired chihuahuas in their own stroller but wish people with small children would refrain from petting them- they’re both vaccinated but Parvovirus is very serious and once before(when I raised short haired Chihuahuas)- the neighbor’s dog had Parvo and since we didn’t have fencing between the house’s my mama dog picked up the Parvovirus and we lost a whole litter to parvovirus, even with vaccinations you can’t be too careful!
