Glad to hear the Ducks settled in well with your others. I study and photograph wild birds in N. W. CA. I understand birds who commonly stay in flocks together, whether on land or in the air, always prefer being in a flock with their own species. I live on the Pacific Flyway, and I see thousands of different bird species flocking together. The bigger the flock, the more secure they feel from predators. Kevin made the best decision for all involved , as always, when he gave you the ducks to add to your flock!

Ducks must have a pond or lake to get into or they’ll completely trash their drinking water. Plus that pooping everywhere is just gross. You really need an enclosure with at least a small pond - then they’ll stay in there. Take a look at Living Traditions Homestead’s videos, from about a month ago. They built an enclosure called “Waddlesville” for their ducks and some of their other poultry. It includes a small “pond” that has a drainage pipe that goes outside of the Waddlesville fence, and that dirty duck water will water & fertilize a couple of Mulberry trees.

Emu breeding season is Oct to May. Fertilization attempts are usually in December. Once she as about seven in the nest that they build together, the male will become broody and the female will leave. In your case, he is into breeding season - she will take longer to allow fertilization most likely.

Emus usually pair up in the summer or fall & stay together for about 5 months. Once they make nest by scraping ground & line it with leaves or grass. They can lay from five to fifteen eggs. They lay an egg about every three days. The eggs could be viable for up to five weeks. Breeding in October in USA.

This is what I know about Emus: The female emus strut around a male making a noise that tells the male emu she is ready to mate. The male emus build the nest. The females lay an egg every second or third day of mating. Usually there are around 8 to 10 eggs that will be laid. Typically they mate Oct-May so during the winter. The mating season an be a month or two before the first egg arrives. He will make the nest and She will lay 7-10 eggs. The male does the incubation which takes 55-60 days. They can be aggressive to humans during this time, just raise your arms or a broom above your head to make yourself larger than them. Keep us posted.

🇦🇺 Emus begin laying eggs as early as 16-18 months of age, but laying normally begins at two to three years. Emus lay large green eggs between November and March. Emus can be productive for more than 20 years and can lay 20-50 eggs in a season

I remember years ago, my sister got 2 ducks for her kids. She said the ducks were so messy. She had to take one of them to the vet. She put it in a dog crate and loaded him in the back of her van. When she got there, she went to get the duck out, and to her absolute horror, the inside of her van was( where the duck was)covered in poo. She was so upset. I'm not sure how long the ducks lived with them after that. I know she gave them to someone who had a farm. Kevin, you have to do what YOU think is best for your family and farm. Not sure, but I can see that poo all over is not a good thing, especially when you have kids(I know they're older). Thanks for being so transparent about these decisions. As for the emus, I haven't a clue. I do agree that they're are acting like mating season is here for them. Especially if this is not their normal behavior. Good luck!

My mother said they had some ducks. She said they did the wash and hanged it on a cloths line. The sheets were just the right height off the ground and the ducks had bit the sheets every few inches and she had to rewash the sheets. That was back when we drew water from a well with a bucket. It was a lot of work to wash clothes.

The female will actually sit on the ground for mating, like alpacas do. Also, the male will sit on the eggs. She won’t have anything to do with them and may even try to kill the hatchlings. I thought that we had a male and 2 females after DNA testing. But now that they are 18 months old, based on sounds (drumming) and chasing each other, flaring at each other, I believe that we have 3 females.

My daughter had ducks for three years, took the last set to a sale barn and I told her never again. Living in town, every time it rained they would drill holes wherever water stood. They were nasty, never mean but just a pain to deal with (first group was 3 Welsh Harlequin Drakes - last set was a pair of Pekin Drakes - never had any luck getting a female from TSC and the other place we got them from). Now the city does not allow ducks at all, and she wants a couple turkeys (told her only if they are used for Thanksgiving and another holiday - that did not go over well with her at all lol).

When you are ready for ducks again you might consider Muscovy ducks. They don't quack but hiss, they're quite a large duck so will cope with the geese better, they roost off the ground in trees if allowed and they're happy without a pond although they'll use one if provided. Not known for egg production especially but dual purpose so more of a meat producer than your other duck breeds.

Emus breed in Dec and January they remain together for about 5 months. They will lay 2-5 eggs. Once they are all done with laying the eggs is when they start to sit on them. Emu eggs are a very dark green. The female will lay 1 egg about every 3 days. The male won’t sit on eggs until there are enough approximately a dozen. (I googled the info).

Sad that the ducks are gone but I understand. Glad they are in good hands. Not too sure about the emu’s. Our neighbor had a male and a female emu and the male started chasing the female. After a while the male started getting aggressive with the female and pecking at her neck and she ended up with large sores on her neck. She would be all bloody. I know our neighbor had to get rid of them to other people. I would just keep a eye on them and check her time to time to make sure that doesn’t happen. Our neighbor only had a very small pasture so the female couldn’t get away from the male. Yohne looks like she has plenty of running room to stay away from Yoshe. Sorry about the spelling of the names. Much love to you, your family and all the animals. God Bless y’all 🙏❤️✝️🥰🤗💖🇺🇸💪🙏
