In a time where traditional roles and family structures, as well as conservative values, are constantly under attack, it is imperative to bring families together for beneficial reminders about how to build and maintain a happy, healthy, and harmonious home.
This talk was delivered at the Muslim Community Center - East Bay (MCC East Bay) in Pleasanton, California on March 18, 2022.
Heba has received her undergraduate degree from UC Irvine in Psychology of Social Science, later earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and is currently pursuing her doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology with California Southern University.
She is an affiliate of the Stanford Muslim Mental Health Lab which focuses on providing resources for clinicians, researchers and community leaders working with the Muslim population. Believing that prevention is superior to intervention, she has worked on promoting awareness on a wide spectrum of topics through seminars, workshops, and lectures through her previous role as a mental health instructor at Kaiser Permanente and currently, as a Khalil Center practitioner serving Zaytuna College.
Heba is a part of a group of clinicians and scholars who contributed to publishing the new text on the TIIP model (Traditional Islamically Integrated Psychotherapy) titled "Applying Islamic Principles to Clinical Mental Health Care" for Muslim practitioners nationwide.

So so much needed to hear this. Thank you and please give us more on this subject. It is so hard to raise children and what makes it even harder is that I myself feel like I still need to be raised. Plus the fact that we live in a country that does not share our principles. May allah make it easy for us all and make our children the carrier of this deen when we are gone.

Excellent discussion. Self-control, emotional regulation, and not giving in to outbursts as parents are keys to having a good family life and great examples for the children.

MashAllah.. Amazing lecture and so informative AlhamdulilAllah.. I am living in a Muslim country.. I don't have kids.. But I am a teacher. I deal with kids and teens with high level of depression and anxiety. Our community unfortunately are away from religion or have misconceptions about raising kids, the parents beats their kids hard specially in a low income families where they suffer from poverty and illness. I want to help them inshAllah.. So can you please discuss topics on teacher students healthy relationships and how to give them guidance based on our Islamic values..And how to give advice for the not so well educated mothers.. Jazakum Allah kheiran katheran

I live in a Europe country and deal with kids from muslim countries at school too and even Allah and the Prophet guide us so good its heartbreaking to see(or hear) how they are treat at home. Violence physical and psychological. If there are problems with other kids they do not talk, the react with violence. I also dont know how to help them further. If you talk to the parents about their kids wrongdoings in school they argument with "ill hardly beat you at home, i will cut your tongue..." i dont wont to be the reason the kids experience more violence. But if you dont react to their behavier what then?

My father has been so toxic and so emotionally and mentally and even sometimes physically abusive to my mother and sister, I cannot emphasize with him. He has blamed my sister for the longest time for his tragedy of coming to us because she got rejected from med schools back home! He did everything mentioned in this video a parent not supposed to do. I have so much empathy and love for that 13 years old (me) who came to US and never had any emotional support, but had to be that adult in the household so much of the time.

JazakhAllah khair obviously people have to wake up to what can actually cause the upheaval of a family outside sources there are people who don't want well for you who lie about you and your children these can have major devastating affects on young people

I do not think.it is a question of parents moving to the western world only because we went through almost the same phases after decolonisation of our country in 1968, though everything you said is completely understandable. I love the idea of parents being shepherds as opposed to engineers. Suddenly, now, at 50 years old everything makes sense and also the stories in the Qur'an of the children of Prophets making the wrong choices makes sense..... Jazak Allah Khair.

Emotional regulation is important for everyone and for every circumstance. Whether we are adults, children, teachers, employers, muslims, christians, atheists, etc. Let's NOT be like Will Smith.
