EMPs without a doubt the most misunderstood subject in the preparedness community.First let me say why I have the knowledge to explain this. I am a communications technician for over 20 years and an amateur for the previous 35. I have installed communication equipment in the bunker at Vandenberg Air Force Base to the roof at Caltech in Pasadena. Part of the job is EMP suppression. I have played with electromagnetic Fields virtually all my life. I also want to say that I am going to approach this explanation with a kiss.(Keep it simple stupid) . That means I'm not going to explain details that may be prevalent.there are four kinds of EMPs. Each with its own subheading. Everyone has seen the most common EMP, Lightning Direct hit or indirect and sheet lightning. I have replaced tons of equipment because of this. My own Communication tower grounding wire has melted from sheet lightning miles away. Next A EMP generator. They come in all sizes and right now the government is working on a directional beam from a drone that will disable all electronics in one building. Next is an EMP from the sun. Either a coronal mass ejection or an electrical storm. This can easily wipe out the entire power grid of the world. It is also unlikely it would affect anything not plugged into the grid. And even most electronics that are plugged into the grid are running through what's called a transformer which means the transformer will burn out but the electronics will probably be okay. So here's the baby. A nuclear detonation creating an EMP. First this means we are now at war. Unlike a hit from the sun which is a strong but slow push. Like a friend pushing you harder and harder and then you FallDown. A nuclear detonation creates a knockout punch. Meaning it is a mass amount of energy at one moment. Unfortunately this has a magnetic field that penetrates so called Faraday cages. After studying the subject for 30 years I have found that so many people think they're electronics are going to be safe with a Faraday cage I've come to the conclusion I had to explain that probably won't work. The good news is even exposed electronics not plugged into anything or wired to anything and over 1000 miles from the detonation maybe okay. Here is a link to an expert.l.facebook.com/l.php...

Great information here! Thanks for taking the time to write all of this. It would be fun to do a livestream with you one of these days to talk about this subject more. I've heard similar things from other EMP folks. Let's sync!

Well after looking at the video I can say that that bag is perfect for Preparedness. When you put the phone in the bag and it stopped running like 20 seconds after you put it in there than that was a excellent sign that that bag works.

To address the transportation issue with the Home Depot totes in your garage, maybe getting some sort of rolling cart that you could strap the totes on? It wouldn't work that well after, say, an earthquake or another situation after the roads are damaged, but it gives you another option.

Yes there are cheap ways to make a Faraday container that will do the job but you have a great point about quick grab and go with this bag. If you can afford it I'd say go for it! Also, I'm not paranoid about tracking (I do get it thou) so I would recommend people use Faraday containers to store back-up things such as extra phone's, charging systems and above all automotive parts like computer module, alternator, starter etc. It would also be a good idea to know how to install these parts on your car.

Don't you need an insulating layer between your equipment and the bag? I'm seeing in the video that the metal mesh layer is what the bag is lined with. I would guess that you need a layer between the metal mesh and the electronics so the pulse isn't just transmitted right through.

Can someone explain what the purpose of protecting my stuff from the remote possibility of an EMP attack? I’ve never understood the point of EMP protection: If an EMP destroys all the electronics and takes down the grid, what’s the point of saving my cell phone? Who am I calling if the cell towers adore dead and none else has a functioning phone?

This approach is a definite approach in the right direction. Electronics will fry circuits if the gear is "on". If electronics are in the "Off" position during an EMP, circuitry should be good to go. Does anyone have any further information to verify this. This is what I was told in school regarding electronics.

so, how do you personally test it to be a Faraday bag? I mean, ok, they stop a regular signal getting in or out of the bag, but how do you know they would stop a large emp?
@TheUrbanPrepper
@TheUrbanPrepper 3 жыл бұрын
Good comment, Randy! I know that a lot of these companies go through compliance testing, like at Keystone Compliance, which simulates all military electromagnetic pulse standards. Mission Darkness started off making their products for law enforcement and government officials to protect electronic evidence from being damaged through some sort of pulse, so I imagine that they too had to go through compliance testing. I've done some research of companies like Keystone Compliance to make sure that they are legit, and it seems like it. I even stocked a few of their engineers on LinkedIn. :) The military compliance testing is super expensive for these companies from what I've heard. So while they probably can't test from a real EMP, they have to meet a certain certification through lab testing.

I don't think they would, to be honest. I'm not sure a faraday bag can attenuate enough energy to protect the electronics inside. Not to mention that the contents aren't exactly [electrically] insulated from the outside of the bag either! It also just occurred to me that a significant enough EMP blast would probably also render many people unconsciousness immediately due to disrupting the electrical signals in the brain

Can someone explain to me. How come the music was still playing. I get that wifi had buffered it the video. But shouldn’t the Bluetooth signal be blocked. I expected that sound would have stopped immediately or at least disturbed???

Can you check with the makers if this can stand a tactical nuclear /EMP detonation around 200 kms away, coz right now i just have that stuff in an iron trunk...

Okay, there is just one problem that you seem to have overlooked. The disruptive frequencies of a nuclear bomb going off and a solar flare interfering with electronics are different. So one bag that protects from nuclear EMP will not protect from solar flares.

So when you throw your phone in the bag you become a whale or a dolphin...popping up every now and then for air. What is the difference in powering down my device and powering it back up when I come up for air?
