I do a lot of work with big data and you are 100% correct, the tracking is incredibly ridiculous from almost everywhere now a days. I think it's a huge invasion of privacy and also makes you very vulnerable to fraud as well. Now the tricky part is, you can't just "go dark" when you go in somewhere - it's too smart for that. The algorithms they use could use deductive reasoning to say - you went dark at place X, and they know your habits already. So it doesn't take much AI and machine learning to say you probably went to this place. So the tricky part is, you have to do this when you are at home before you leave so they are truly in the dark and there is no breadcrumbs to follow. The worst part is everyone, everywhere is constantly gathering data - so even if you do go dark , they can track you through your friends and family. So it really is hard to be anonymous these days. You could go hide out in the woods for ten years and they would probably still have a profile on you. Now that said, what I think is helpful that you can do is adjusting a number of settings - disable personalized ad tracking wherever possible, use ad-blockers, turn off wifi, bluetooth, and GPS in public settings. To beat the computers, you also have to think like a computer and computers are not very good if you give it bad data. So what I like to do is put garbage in the data - do some weird searches, click on random ads that have nothing to do with you, and put in bad data into forms. That's actually one of my favorite methods for beating the tracking and works well :)

Excellent video Cliff. I'm a bit skeptical about it being a true Faraday cage. If that were true that a m signal would have been totally blocked out. With that said it probably provides enough attenuation on higher frequencies like gps, bt, wifi, 3g, 4g, 5g, .., to keep you safe. If your privacy concerns were critical, I would double bag the mobile network enabled devices.

Is that a Spigen case on your smartphone? 7:30 I was going to ask about airplane mode, then I noticed you mentioned how a smartphone can still be tracked, so I did a quick search on the subject. From what I've found so far, tracking under airplane mode depends on the GPS being on, so I'd guess using airplane mode + turning GPS off would both cut off communication with any antennae (4G, wifi, bluetooth, etc.) as well as keep your device from finding out where it is - of course, it can still use its sensors (e.g., accelerometer, compass) to gather some data, but those would still work even inside a Faraday cage anyway. Would that suffice or am I still missing something?

The issue with the dolphin/whale approach is that “they”can see you disappear and reappear. They aren’t stupid. I think a better option is to turn the phone completely off, or to simply leave it at home (or wherever). Maybe consider a “dumb” phone that has no gps/WiFi/etc

I found a away around this, i just got an old simple mobile phone you can call with ... and then i'm just trying to be smart myself ;P ... and sure, there are times when you feel somewhat bored (in public taffic f/e), but i've found that to be a good thing, you can just look around and see how these things turn people into digital zombies as they are all around you staring at their phone; or you can just stare outside and see the world pass by, stare at the clouds, count the cows, etc ... also does great for your mental state, as you loose the need to constantly check your phone for new info, that is generally of no real value anyways, and seeing how digital information is as patient as a book, you can just read that when ever it's convenient to do so, on a big monitor too ! ... but still tnx a bunch for sharing this product, if i am ever forced to get a smartphone, or decide i do need one, then this would definitely be a product i would be interested in !

To answer a lot of the questions here, no, turning off location services is not the same at all. It is a software setting that is easily and regularly overridden by kernel permissions on your phone or low-level operating system activities. As an example, If you have any sort of settings on your Apple, Google account or Samsung or whatever for finding your phone if it is lost or stolen, that is just one way. It overrides location tracking the same way it overrides the volume settings when you click the option to ring your phone even if it is silenced. As another example, it doesn't matter how private you make your phone, every time you dial 911 it in the minimum dumps information on the tower you are connected to and ideally start spamming your GPS coordinates as well and can be regularly refreshed manually by an operator polling for phase 2 location data. All of the carriers and network operator virtual or physical, have the capabilities to do a number of operating system level things on your phone. And on top of all of that, your phone is constantly giving away enough information about where it's at to get a decent idea of your location and direction of travel because if it didn't do that you wouldn't be able to connect to the towers at all and the towers will not be able to hand your call to the next one as you're driving down the road or walking or whatever. So, disabling location services will help increase your privacy and shield some of your activity from the kind of apps that harvest this kind of data, but that is only if it is not malicious and they are following the rules and your respective app store has fully vetted the program. Just because you went online and deleted your Google location history and turned off Google tracking does it mean they still don't have that information obtained from a roundabout (albeit legal) alternative method. If you truly want that phone to disappear off of the map for any period of time and for any reason, you need to make sure it cannot connect to the network at all, anyone's network even if it is for a carrier who you do not have an account with. That means completely blocking the band of frequencies that your phone uses. I am not advocating for any manufacturer of bag in particular, but you have to be careful. In this case you can imagine RF energy as behaving like light. If there are any gaps or low-quality seams large enough for tiny high high-frequency radio waves to leak through then it is pointless. I am not concerned with the fact that the bag in this video still can pick up some AM signals because I would use this bag for blocking signal from my cell phone which it works perfectly for. So you should have a clear understanding of what you are trying to defend against. Tracking? EMP? Or both? With that being said, don't accept fact from me, some random person on the internet, take a look at EMP research (both theoretical and factual), and get an idea of the frequencies involved. Some types of shielding is great for generators and electric motors and micro transistors, but some shielding is also simply for blocking certain type of RF without much of a consideration for EMP frequencies and the extreme energy involved. There is some overlap in higher quality materials but that's to the point where I need to start researching more myself. Some applications are going to be small, light, portable, and specialized while other applications may have heavy shielding materials and permanent grounding to the Earth. Just depends what you're looking for, there is rarely ever a one-size-fits-all solution due to cost or practicality.

@Evocati Not at all true. It really is as simple as just turning the phone off. No juice, no signal in or out. They stop making phones with removable batteries so they could make them smaller and use more advanced cooling technology for the lithium ion cells. You could also make the argument that it means you have to have them replace the battery when it wears down which is true, but most people just end up getting new phones before that happens anyway. I like the idea of having one of these bags for EMP protection but there's really no reason to get one otherwise, and EMP's are so theoretical in their damage that who know's if these would even work

You can make a Faraday bag by going to the c-store and buying a bag of chips (not one with a window) and asking for a plastic shopping bag. Drop the device into the plastic bag, and then drop the plastic bagged device into the chip bag and the roller crimp the top. If it doubled as a dry bag it'd be better.... Also, it's allot better to deal with this by being pickier about your electronic devices and what runs on them. Like, a laptop with the Intel Management Engine neutered and the UEFI stripped out and running a good Linux distro isn't going to be transmitting your location without authorization. It's harder with phones. But on Android at least you can disable assisted GPS, which slows down acquisition time and increases power consumption but reduces the privacy risk. Also be very picky about what apps get what permissions. The permissions system in Android sucks, plenty of apps that don't ask for network access clearly have network access, and if you allow an app file system access but not GPS access it can still read your GPS sensor it just can't turn it on

I have the large Mission Darkness faraday bag and when I place my cell phone in it, I am able to use another cell phone to "track my phone" (find my device) and it's totally still on-grid! Nothing blocked...

A vehicle registered in your name, can be tract via the vehicle's onboard electronics. So much for Faraday cages for vehicles.

Am I pointing at the elephant in the room or have I missed something, would turning your phone off not do the same thing and also save your battery as it won’t be constantly working overtime trying to find a signal? This isn’t a criticism I’m just not sure.

Like most things, it isn't as simple as it sounds. Generally speaking, yes, the phone should not be tracked when off. However, the complex answer is your phone could have an implant from the NSA, it could have an older piece of hardware, an extra chip, an app, or other things that could actually bypass the phone being off and allow it to still being tracked.
