OK. But how can you love who or what tries to destroy you? I believe that life is a continuous battle for survival and that in order to survive, one has to oppose, avoid, and even fight those who take advantage, use, try to control or to destroy you.

Fair point. I suppose Empedocles' point may have been more about the elements. I was taking liberty in interpretation by extending his vision of love to our contemporary world!
