pretty telling how a “crazy” old man who claimed himself as emperor of the U.S had a much better understanding of equal rights than the people actually in charge. this is all speculation of course, but maybe since he had fallen on hard times himself he was able to empathize with those less privileged? either way, i think this dude would’ve made a GREAT leader lol.

Love how you go on a side-tangent on how Kamehameha of Hawaii inspired the name of the iconic Kamehameha of Dragon Ball. However, it's not as inexplicable as you'd guess; "Kame" is Japanese for "Turtle", which is in reference to the technique's creator Master Roshi (also known as the Turtle Hermit), while "Ha" means "Wave", as in an energy wave. Still a pun on the Hawaiian king but there is reason behind it.

Yeah, this guy paved the way for modern Celebrity, Name recognition, and the licencing of Personal Identities for advertising and promotions. It'as no wonder that imaginary celebrities like Bart Simpson, Hatsune Miku, and Superman, Batman, and Pikachu bring in BILLIONS for advertisers around the world. Emperor Norton was the first Celebrity "Icon." He really paved the way for all of the Icons to come, from Shaq, the Rock, and Michael Jordan, to our many movie and television stars, to popular politicians like Reagan and Trump. Creating a marketable image, like Joshua Norton did, is the key to success in the Modern World. It's no wonder, his currency is currently worth thousands of times its face value. He was truly a man ahead of his time.

His story is actually a tale of tragedy in a way. As a child, growing up in South Africa, his family struggled to make enough money to survive and he lost all his siblings when they were quite young. So I think when he lost his fortune he went into a deep depression. The loss of his fortune, something he probably worked hard to get, all due to rice, probably drove him to depression and his Emperor Norton persona was his way of coping with the shock. Unfortunately psychology at the time was still a young field and we can’t diagnose what Joshua Norton suffered from thus we can never be certain. If you want to learn more look up the Emperor Norton trust. They are an organization dedicated to uncovering the facts about the man. It’s how I learned about what has been gleaned about his childhood.

Thanks for a great episode! Mark Twain was one of Norton's neighbors, incidentally. People who knew Norton I insisted that he was brilliant, and capable of discussing many topics in a perfectly clear manner, as long as you didn't mention the Emperor thing. Coincidentally, I just ordered a copy of Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, by William Drury. Norton is also a Saint in the Discordian religion, appropriately enough, adherents of which named the 10th planet Eris.

A charming story, well told. In 1976, the popular comic series of cowboy "Lucky Luke", written and painted in France, but popular all over Europe, dedicated an album to a story "The Emperor of America". The protagonist went by a different name and the ending was diffferent, but it was clearly inspired by this guy. I read that as a kid.

Nice video. It would be interesting to include the tidbit about the dog that hung out with him. It was famous for catching rats. There were so much garbage in the alleys of many American cities back then that rats proliferated. The semi-stray dogs of the neighborhoods would make their rounds killing rats.

Crazy stuff. He was still poor when he was the pretend emperor of the United States. So how did he earn a living? Did his loyal subjects spend money on him during his administration? Man, this story is weird. I believe there were more people who had his ideas of equal rights for everyone, just none or very very few of them were famous or well known. Very few popular people spoke out. Remember Davy Crockett? He was the only member of the house of representatives that was against the Indian removal act. He once said of his thoughts on such that when he face God at judgement day, he will have a clear conscience. This was about seven or eight years before the Alamo. And yes this cost Davy his seat at the House of Representatives. So I believe that some of Norton's ideas wasn't new. But wow! Wierd stuff. And San Francisco went along with it???? Definitely a man I'll look up on wikipedia. Thanks Thoughty2. 😁

He was a good leader in part because he goes on the ground and interacts with the common people which really helps in coming up with good policies. Something that most law makers don't do these days. They just come up with policies they think will work instead of actually going out there to see for themselves and ask people.
