An emperor decided to choose his successor from young people in the kingdom. He gave each child a seed to plant and return in a year with the plant they had grown. All the children planted their seeds and watered them, but only one boy named Ali had nothing growing in his pot after a year. When all the children presented their plants, Ali brought his empty pot. The emperor revealed that he had given everyone boiled seeds that would not grow, and Ali was the only one who had not swapped his seed. The emperor declared Ali the next emperor, as he had shown courage and honesty.
