On Suzaku 'betraying' Lelouch by bringing him to the emperor. Lelouch had just turned the person Sukazu loved into the greatest monster in the world, while getting who knows how many of the Japanese killed in the process. The fact that Suzaku had the restraint to try and get himself into a better position (and thus closer to being able to fix the damage) rather than just snapping Lelouch's neck on Kamine is already incredible.

@TheHunterkiller96 Жыл бұрын
@@essdeeare We can also say that there was never a particularly good chance for Lelouch to be able to accomplish a successful revolution either. The other things to keep in mind are that Lelouch did decide to work with Euphemia right before his geass activated there. It still wouldn't have been easy, but working with her would have opened up new ways to accomplish all of their goals. In terms of Suzaku's current position, he has really good odds of accomplishing his goal if Schneizal becomes the next emperor (which in a normal world, wouldn't be that far away given the Emperor's current age.)
@BremenSA Жыл бұрын
@@essdeeare I kinda disagree. Suzaku could potentially have changed things from within. Euphie had power and was trying for real change. And while the show does show us plenty of Brittanian characters being terribly racist, going by the named Brittanian characters we see most don't appear to have any problems with treating the Japanese with respect. Assuming an alternate reality with no bloodstained Euphie, I could see her idea actually working and gradually leading to self governance for Japan as a Brittanian ally. It wouldn't have been as good as independence or nearly as quick, but it also would have happened without millions of violent deaths, so I won't condemn Suzaku for his ideals.
@baldawen Жыл бұрын
@@BremenSA It took Euphie giving up her rights to the throne (and so giving up all of her power) to create the special zone and she only got permission for it because Schneizel knew that it would destroy the Black Knights. This MIGHT have improved the situation in one country a bit. The rest of the world was still fucked. Most of the heirs to the throne were either racist or just didn't care and only they had the power to change it. So I see no way for Suzaku to change anything. Knight of the round was already an unreasonably high postition for him to achieve and he didn't really do anything with it.

Fun fact: According to the creators in an interview for Newtype magazine in 2008, Code Geass R2 is called that because the R represents Rebellion, Return, Revenge and Reconstruction (they are key words for this second part) and 2 is for season 2. Also, R2 alludes to "Route 2" because of what I said before. Little update: I hadn't noticed that there are a pair of wings behind Zero. Usually, in audiovisual language, when the director gives wings to a character it is to accentuate his power and the fact that Zero's wings are angelic emphasizes the idea that he is the messiah of the Japanese. It's a notable contrast to Lelouch's demon wings in this season's beautiful first ending. He is a demon in the metaphorical sense. No, Schneizel is not with the Knights of Round.

There are four major divergences in history to make the Holy Britannia Empire we see in the show: - First, the American War of Revolution, called Washington's Rebellion, fails. Mainly due to Benjamin Franklin betraying the revolutionaries by being bribed with the offering of the title of baron. This kept north America as a British colony. - Napoleon won Trafalgar and put the English on their back foot, forcing the royal family to retreat to Edinburgh. - On Edinburgh, a local revolutionary group, unhappy with the monarchy and the war, captured queen Elizabeth III and forced her to publicly abdicate, ending the monarchy over the British Isles. This is called the "Humiliation of Edinburgh" in the show's cannon during a class scene. - Finally, loyalist nobles Sir Ricardo von Britannia, Duke of Britannia, and his friend and subordinate Sir Richard Hector, Knight of One, safely extract Elizabeth III to America, creating a capital there. Elizabeth III dies childless, but nominates Sir Ricardo as her successor, starting the royal line of the Holy Britannian Empire we see on the show. These changes make some major consequences: - First, the British Isles are free from monarchist rule and fully a part of the Europia United (the European Union of the show) - Second, Britannia never colonizes asia, including, mainly, India, which becomes a part of the Chinese Federation instead - Thirdly, Britannia takes over the rest of the americas instead, tho it is unsure how much of the americas are "the Homeland" and how much of it are "Areas". - And fourthly and perhaps most important, being forced out of the British Isles leads to a major feeling of revanchism as the major national goal of the Britannian Empire. They were humiliated and defeated and it is *their right* to take revenge upon the world and claim their position back as the largest empire. This feeling is what fuels most of the nationalism and warmongering of Britannia throughout the series; alongside a strong favouring of Social Darwinism (exemplified by Emperor Charles' eulogy: "People are born different, its the right of people to compete and the strong to win")

And Suzaku's actions in the story itself barely affected the way Euphy's and Lelouch's last meeting went down. So I don't see how him joining Zero would have been "avoiding the tragedy", when Bloody Euphemia was all about Lelouch using geass one too many times and believing he won't become like Mao. He didn't want it to happen and it was an accident, but he does have a certain responsibilty for it. Suzaku, though? Not at all. Seeing everything that has happened, he's decided to be a bit more ruthless. He still doesn't like killing, but betraying a friend for maximum benefit is now something he can accept. After all, if he had voiced his thought that Zero seemed too similar to his good friend, perhaps he could have saved Euphemia and countless Elevens. Lelouch does care about people's free will to a certain extent (which his ability to casually other Brittanian soldiers doesn't conflict with), but something I rarely see discussed when it comes to this scene is how horribly he's manipulating Kallen here. He's expertly using the truth to twist her emotions and lead her to becoming more subservient. Nothing he says is a lie, or even a half-truth, so she won't realise that he's playing her even days or months later. And when she inevitably agrees to keep following him, the fact that he let her come to this conclusion on her own reassures her that he respected her free will, when in reality, he used her emotional vulnerabilities and ignorance of how emotional manipulation works to ensure that she would choose him. It's incredibly devious, and honestly really despicable considering their history together up to this point. And yes, it's something that he's been doing to all the members of the Black Knights from as soon as episode 2 of season 1, but never to such an icky extent. Now we do see later on in this very episode that he does in fact care about his soldiers' lives more than in season 1, and he goes on to get really attached to Kallen and treat her with genuine respect and care later on, but still, *fucked up*

[IIRC] The world or at least Britannia and the EU (not European Union... I always forget the correct term...) looks like this because of three major battles in history, that took another turn than we know. 1. The Romans never conquered Britain, so Britannia as a whole is much older and stronger. 2. The British won the war against Washington and its 13 American colonies, so there never was a USA and Britannia managed to create a stable colonial Empire in America. 3. Napoleon won against the Brits, conquered their main land and managed to unite Europe (not sure if by himself or in consequence to that). Britannia had to 'move' to America and later on looked further across the Pacific Ocean to Japan/Area 11.

Napoleon did defeat England and invade the British Isles, but he failed to take over Russia. And his attempt of becoming emperor of Europe was ended by revolutionaries with a guillotine. How the rest of the events follow is hard to say. There was something akin to World War 1, according to C.C.'s memories, and there was also a scramble for Africa as most of it is part of the Europia United (the EU). Let's review three important points from this episode: 1. Suzaku: The "betrayal of Lelouch" constituted a turning point in Suzaku's arc since up to that point he had done nothing legitimately wrong. Why did he do it? To stop Lelouch mainly, but he also did it to get a promotion. The first reason is in line with Suzaku's pacifism and his belief that all crimes deserve to be punished. The second reason is the most interesting because Suzaku is handing over his best friend to his worst enemy and didn't cross his moral boundaries. Why? He earlier called Lelouch to tell him that he wanted to take revenge on the person who killed his beloved by taking Zero's life (something that, without a doubt, would have destroyed his convictions since he wouldn't have followed the rules and would have become a murderer). But he didn't do it because it was more beneficial for Suzaku to take Lelouch before the emperor to negotiate a promotion and put an end to Lelouch's rebellion, which made the living conditions of the Japanese even more difficult and increased oppression against Area 11. That's calculated thinking. A pragmatic decision. Lelouch's own. I remember my favorite quote from a book I read this year was a question a character asked himself: "Is it better to live decently or intelligently?" Lelouch has clearly chosen to live intelligently. Suzaku wants to live with decency and so he achieved it for the first season, but, in a way, here Suzaku finds a balance between the two, will he lean more towards intelligence, as the series progresses? 2. Lelouch and Kallen: Why did Kallen return to Lelouch, even though he tricked her and used her? Because Kallen thinks that she and the Japanese need Zero to free Japan, which is Kallen's goal. In her opinion, Lelouch is the only person who can guide them to victory over Britannia and, to her, "change the world" is more important than her hurt feelings and Lelouch's lies (Kallen is a person as pragmatic as she is selfless.) She has seen what Lelouch is capable of and believes in his miracles, or rather, she knows that Lelouch can produce results. Still, Kallen won't feel safe as his follower until she can fully trust Lelouch, and she's already discovered that she can't trust what her senses have perceived so far, which is frustrating for her because Kallen judges people by their actions and not by their intentions (Suzaku is the best example of this: even if she learned that he wants to end oppression as much as she does, she doesn't care because his methods aren't correct). So this particular situation forces Kallen to use her judgment and do a deeper investigation into Lelouch to find out what kind of person he is. Only then will she be able to understand and judge him. Kallen already made the mistake of jumping to conclusions about her mom and the student council and she won't do it again. In the end, she takes the opportunity to find out if Lelouch is twisted enough to take over her will, and she gives Lelouch the benefit of the doubt. When Kallen says that she believes in Zero and not Lelouch, she means that she chose to believe in the ideals that Zero promulgated and the results that he promised and this is important, but I'll talk about that later. Although Lelouch seems to reproach her for abandoning him, he doesn't really judge her for it. He is teasing her. In this scene I wondered the first time I saw the anime if I was seeing the preamble to a romance, due to the emphasis the series gave to Kallen's reaction when he gave her his jacket, that Lelouch was seeing her breasts and that Lelouch and Kallen became close over Zero's secret, which changed their dynamic. I wasn't wrong.
@AlicentviBritannia Жыл бұрын
3. Emperor: When Suzaku brings Zero unmasked before the Emperor, he is not surprised because he already knew Zero's true identity and that he had a Geass. Therefore, Kenny's theory was correct. The Emperor knew this from the moment he spoke to Clovis in the Sword of Akasha (CC has been speaking to Lelouch's mother this whole time, so it's not impossible to speak to the dead). Likewise, Kenny's other theory that the Emperor has a Geass capable of manipulating memories is correct (CC knew this and that's why she kiss Lelouch to preserve his memories). He only used it on Lelouch and the student council (Suzaku probably disliked that idea since he considers Geass evil, but he couldn't oppose the emperor). The Emperor needs Lelouch to capture CC alive, so he is using his son as bait (yeah, those men of OSI didn't a good work). That's why the emperor left Lelouch alive. By the way, I must remember that Geass is a supernatural power that affects people's minds. It doesn't break the laws of physics or anything like that.

And while Mao's geaus was more passive, it has been used on lelouch after lelouch had used Geaus on himself. (So far lelouch has shown he can only use geaus on someone HE has not already geaused, Mao could geaus the same person multiple times. A lot of people talking about Suzaku in the comments so there's not a whole lot I can really add to that, just that as a character I enjoy him a lot as a foil/comparison to Lelouch; however, I'll never agree with his ideals. Can't wait to see you guys witness how things play out during this season

This is how I always describe Lelouch's overall arc throughout the whole show Season 1 starts with him in a morally and emotionally wobbly place, and then consists of nothing but him slowly sliding down in the deepest pits of hell Season 2, for the first half, is him veeery slowly climbing out of the pit; making new friends, reaffirming his old connections, examining his desires and needs, and generally just healing from all the damage he's sustained in S1 and before that Then episode 13 and 18 happen, where he loses his grip on the wall and immediately falls all the way back down to the bottom of the pit, where he stays for the rest of this season

So that’s three characters in one episode with Geass? Naturally, it’s a Geass bargain sale…

When the choices are be a terrorist or change from the inside, sacrificing some of who you are is hopefully a foregone conclusion ergo Suzuku is morally justified zero si not

How was Kalen (don’t know if I spelled that right) not affected by Lelouch’s Geass btw? Was it just that he wasn’t saying anything that could sound like a command?

What Suzaku did to Lelouch was nothing but cruel, vengeful, spite, yet he still deludes himself by claiming he's doing the right thing for people bu it's nothing than his own satisfaction. This is why I hate him, he convinces himself that whatever he does is "right", which gives him license in his mind to do anything and still be in the right.

To be fair, Lelouch absolutely deserved that. Because what that man did to Euphimia apparently on purpose is absolutely one of the most evil things you can do to someone. We're talking "we're going to stage the greatest terrorist attack ever seen. And by the way, we're going to mindr* Mr Rogers into doing it". That's _incredibly_ cruel. The fact that it wasn't accident changes that _a little_ , but if you don't know that... Let's just say most folks wouldn't have allowed Lelouch to make it to the emperor, and would've slept peacefully afterwards.

@@AStrangeWindmill It's understandable that Suzaku would want revenge, I'm not saying he wouldn't, but he has the nerve to pretend that what he's doing isn't purely out of vengeance and a desire to see Lelouch suffer while pretending he's still just doing what's necessary to save lives. No, he WANTED Lelouch to suffer, yet has the nerve to condemn others seeking, not revenge, but justice for what's been done to them.
