Japanese monarchy is claimed to be the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world. The Imperial House recognizes 126 monarchs beginning with the legendary Emperor Jimmu (traditionally dated to 660 BC) and continuing up to the current emperor, Naruhito. In Japan, the position of emperor was typically inherited through the male line (although the eldest son did not necessarily inherit the role), but there were nine female holders of the position, the first being Empress Suiko (r. 592-628 CE) and the last Empress Meisho (r. 1629-1643 CE)
