This is such an excellent visualization of how Emphysema stole my ability to do the things I most enjoy. You can't compromise with it once it starts. I quit smoking cigarettes in 1968; traded my 3 pack a day habit for a pipe full of Borkum Riff. I chewed on that pipe for twenty years before I started losing my teeth at age 50. I changed to cigars until I had to quit 4 years after I was diagnosed with the Big E. I used to be an athlete now a good day is when I can cut my small yard or take out the garbage. If you haven't quit yet don't wait til your 70! My brother quit 27 years ago and hes 81 and going strong!

It is really generous of you to have spelled out the consequences of habits that many of us would actually relate to. I hope 6 years later you are still with us and enjoying life despite Emphysema.

This is complicated stuff, but Armando does a superb job putting it all together. Any way you look at it, once you have watched this video, I don't understand how anyone can continue to smoke. I quit smoking at age 31, and now I am 70. Quitting smoking was probably the most important thing I ever did in my life. 'When you can't breathe, nothing else matters'.

It's a good and usefull video! But the balance you draw at 6:50 should be the other way since protease are "heavier" because of neutrophils augmented contribution, don't you think?

Just gotta say... thanks for these videos. They help a lot. you have (a lot, but not all) professors in universities getting paid good money to teach--no present ppt slides to students, but us students flock to youtube and search for these helpful videos to understand and learn what we're being taught in school...While paying the institution anywhere from 25k~60k a year. I dont get it.

What about genetic pre disposal.I have had 5 A1 alpha tests done in less than 8yrs these were negative.I am now 54 but understand that the first signs would have been in the late teens. Treatments were for many yrs for a pre diagnosed Asthma, bronchial, bronchitis but of course this became accepted as only a clinical diagnosis and did not get to the systemic cause.Life was lived without ever smoking , drinking or working in an atmosphere that would irritate the lungs or experiencing many toxic air situations because there was much country living both abroad and in my native Country of Wales in the UK so where are my answers to a life that gives me frustration of not being able to breath without throwing anti inflammatory medications at it and not getting rid of the mucus filled surviving alveoli and the toxins that perpetuate the condition.

This video is really well done and helpful. But I think there's a small mistake. You show the fulcrum of the protease and anti-protease imbalance, and on the low (heavy) side you placed the antiprotease, with the high (light) side as the protease. Shouldn't that be reversed, or am I just not understanding correctly? I thought that in COPD there's too much protease and not enough anti protease? Thanks.
