Since EA has dug up and pissed all over the corpse of Command and Conquer at E3, it would be great if you could review Command and Conquer: Generals and its expansion pack Zero Hour in one of your next videos and remind us of the glory days of Command and Conquer.

I have a game suggestion for you: Achron (NOT "Archon"), an RTS that heavily focuses on time travel. Not just time travel in the backstory and lore and such, but in *actual matches.* Oh, did I mention that this is a *multiplayer* game that you can (and should) play against *real humans*? I'd recommend checking out the TV Tropes page for it for a proper explanation of how the whole thing works, since it explains it much better than I can. You can do things like make a scout unit, order it to go into the enemy base, skip ahead one minute into the future to see what it finds, then go back to the present and cancel the order, or go back in time and build units to prepare (postpare?) for an attack that's currently happening in the present. IIRC, stuff four minutes before the present becomes finalized/set in stone, and you can only skip/jump up to one minute after the present. Here, have some videos (the first one comes from a demo of the game, and the pathfinding issue mentioned in the second one has been fixed): kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYW5pIuYjLaLppI kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJq5d4iXq5yfpLc Okay, this will be the third and last time that I repost this, since I don't want to be one of those guys that constantly spams the same request at you. Hopefully you'll see this, since this is the second to top reply to your post.

My humle suggestions - Arx Fatalis, Boiling Point and Metal Fatigue. It might be my opinion but... more oldies, less indies. Just sayin... There is little to no active channels doing reviews of old games, and most of them fairly obscure. Indie? Plenty+let's plays.

Man, I remember driving my parents absolutely nuts with this game. We only had 1 computer in the house, and no headphone, so my parents were forced to listen to this horrible cacophony of clangs and bangs. I'll never forget assembling armies of stealth bombers and just nuking the absolute shit out of everything on the map. Almost 20 years later, my parents still sometimes make fun of me by yelling "we are undah attack!!" Good times.

Hi! That's my voice that you are using as an example of bad VO. :-) To be fair, I was the Lead Designer, not a VO actor. And I have no memory of recording VO for the game, but it's hard to refute the fact that it's me. And I agree that it was not good, neither the VO or the expansion.

Mentioning the game being a war of attrition reminds me of my all time favorite MP game ever. I picked camouflage and pathfinding in a map. The game locked out before ww2 so no nukes and limited air power. My opponent quickly overwhelmed my bases, but my units had one advantage. They could walk through forests and turn invisible. What began was the Vietnam War as my enemy couldn't find my units, and I couldn't kill enough of his. It was just me having sharpshooters sitting beyond the treeline until one of his patrols autoexploring the map would happen by. Kill a few, run away. He eventually built the wonder that lets him see all buildings, which forced me to adopt a system of building a base, getting as much resources as possible, then running away before he could respond. It was great. I don't think any other RTS game had such organic, asymmetrical possibilities that would just emerge out of a little creativity.

Thanks for the story! It totally triggered a 15+ year old memory! I had a similar situation in the 'sequel', Empires: Dawn of the Modern World. Me and a classmate were playing 1v1, and I was dominating him a fair bit. However, we played on the largest map, and he was China, who had mobile bases. We ended up having an hours long game of cat and mouse, where he just kept on relocating some of his bases to another corner to stay alive and rebuild in secret. We were sitting on computers in adjoining rooms, with a few meters in between, and a door. It ended up with us half playing, and half having a struggle between him body blocking his screen while I was trying to sneak a peek by opening the door and peeking out as sneakily as possible. Much of his time was spent forcing the door shut, so I couldn't screen cheat and finally finish off the game. Man, good times
@dorpth
@dorpth 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheKaoticSanity I knew 2 crazy comp sci guys in college who would have a "creative" take on Starcraft when they were drunk and playing in the same room. You were allowed to physically do anything to the other player, short of bodily harm, computer harm, or shutting off power. This resulting in dividing attention between playing, throwing stuff at the other player, grabbing their mouse hand, blocking their view of the monitor, and in some heated case a wrestling match.

Similar thing happened to me in supcom 2 on the big desert map (3 player ffa). Lost my base 40 minutes in, proceeded to turn into a guerrilla fighting force that wound up building silo's in the canyons to overwhelm the one players nuke defenses with about 200 nukes. I'd build an experimental factory, create a unit and load it into a transport as the enemy nukes/ artillery/ airforce wiped out the base behind it. I survived by building all over, all at once, and also nowhere. In the end I knocked off the second player (he killed the third after my nukes decimated their base) by dropping 10 experimentals on his commander. Game took 2 hours and I was shaking when it finished.

Honestly, the best thing about EE...well, it was building cities in the map editor. When a 7 year old child that does not understand a lick of English can use it without help, then you are doing things correctly. And yes, I was that kid who would be wiped out early game and proceed to act as a micro nation for a stronger teammate, simply being content building an empire of farms.

Then said to myself "isn't this a bit over-dramatic for snow plowers? I loved Enmity. Totally captured that "grand but dark" kinda feel of the game (excluding the funny campaigns). Honestly, looking back at it, in a lot of ways it was kinda paving the way for the 4X genre. It certainly had a much grander scale than regular RTS at the time, so I guess it fills a similar role as SoaSE, bridging the gap towards the more complex games that came out a little later.

Empire Earth influenced me in so many ways tbh. As a young kid our whole family had to live with my grandfather cuz of serious obstacles that came up, which was like 2005 or 6 maybe? I was so young that my memories of that time only come in bits n pieces - This game being one I could nvr ever forget or let go. At such a young age I was using the Scenario Editor to make my own maps, playing Sims 2 on the same XP computer time to time. Mission starts, pause, que up a ton of units. You've got a lot of buildings and thousands of every resource, so don't skimp out. As soon as you've got a few tanks, a siege gun or two, and a couple anti-air , go kill green. As in they should be dead in the first 5ish minutes of the game; you don't need a lot, they're two eras behind you. Once they're dead, add the units that were building in the meantime to your army and hug the bottom of the map all the way west, up to orange's farms, then up towards their capital. You just walked around all their cities and they die as soon as it goes down, should be done around 10-15 minutes in. Then voila, half your enemies gone, you've got cybers, plenty of space, and can leisurely build up to kill purple. Yellow rarely, if ever, attacks, purple's easy to handle alone, and Britain's attacks are rare enough to not be a big deal. Victory. Oh, and get those two port towns for the victory points and population, but don't worry about defending them. They're only good for fighting that harbor-clogging fleet, and there's no reason to do so at all.

What I did in this mission was to move instantly after the start with all units west. There in the corner i destroyed the small base and used the infinite stone to build some solid defence. From that point, you can slowly advance.

Having played a lot in multiplayer back when the official servers were still running, I disagree about the music being unmemorable and dull. Shadows & Enmity are the two tracks that always come to mind when thinking about this game, even years after I played it last time. They're not as in your face or epic as the main theme (which is admittedly awesome), but there are many tracks that are great at building tension and atmosphere: Honor, Rivers, Time, Balance of Power.

This would make the pop go down so you could make more units and store them in fortresses in sort of an infinite loop. Me and a mate played together and focused on defence while just stacking looads of units. Then after we had enough we emptied out those fortresses and just curb stomped every other player XD

I'm sure you're not. These things occur because studios purchased batches of pre-recorded music in order to fill in certain areas. This could have been due to time constraints, cost savings or whatever. Lots of triggers that you hear in HoMM3 (like the new month one) can be heard in South Park from at least the 6th season to the 9th. I'm always blaming myself for not marking these down with timestamps and all. Swear on my cross Heroes 4 has common musical elements with Stronghold: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2bZdoukjLaCfpI - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGfSpYt6ibhjgbc The singer's timbre is really close. It was all mixing and editing. I'm pretty sure they bought it in batches and mixed and re-recorded as needed.

Make alot of planes and set their speeds differently and you have a mayhem of retarded planes goofing around. And I could never finish any campaign, it was just too hard

I can give you a somewhat long explanation. First off all the campaigns were removed in favor or a conquer the world map. there were only 5 ages instead of 15 for EE 1. You had: Ancient (think iron age from age of empires), medieval, nepolianic or industrial, modern, and the future. There were only 3 civilizations to choose from, but at least they were vastly different. West had big strong costly units, east swarmed you with heaps of weak units and east was really mobile.. I think. I can't really remember. The units also had awful voicelines. They were awful jokes that you would hear over and over until you wanted to bash your head in. For example the attack heli's in the modern age would say "Take a picture why don't ya? It will last longer!" in a really condescending voice that sounded like they were saying it to you. And then lastly it just got bonkers by the end era's. The east got these biological engineered abominations that looked like they came from half life 2. They could spawn zombies. The game was advertised as historically accurate >:I and lastly to top it all off the soundtrack sucked. nothing memorable at all. The main theme was the same part of a tune nearly the whole way through.

Could have mentioned the scenario editor. I remember a lot of people made their own scenarios to share online on sites like Empire Earth Heaven. Always nice to see somebody remember Empire Earth. The original was a very high quality game that has been almost forgotten.

Yeah, the editor is great and somewhat simple on the surface, yet it has some depth for those interested. The best type of editor....

I loved the scenario editor. I made the Industrial and WW 1 European Roleplay scens.

Yep. Indy Roleplay took me a year to develop. WWI not so much, but made an intro animation of the French going over the top and charging the German trench.

When I was a kid I used to make cities in this game while playing against enemy AI and I had basically no military. You can guess how it went everytime the AI attacked lol. This game's scenario editor was awesome too, one could make beautiful cities and cool battle maps. I used to be really creative with these when I was a kid but now I can't find myself creating anything. I guess my childhood creativity and patience are gone.

My only experience with the original EE is really odd. I remember buying No One Lives Forever at a thrift store a while back so I could have a legit copy to play and show off, and after bringing it home, I found something I didn't notice in the game box when I bought it: someone left their copy of the EE Expansion in there. So now I have this copy of the expansion but I don't own the original game.

To be fair, your critique of the soundtrack that one of them is less exciting - it's meant to be the calm music in a game, so yeah

Yeah that "calmer track" was still pretty dope imo. It's not nearly as epic feeling as the main theme. But it still feels pretty dope. And is still really rememberable.

@@jeltje50 just imagine the main theme playing in the background on a 8+ hours long match... it's not designed for that... I think they did a really good job with the in game music
