Empire State Building vs. 8.1 Earthquake

Watch this hypothetical earthquake collapse simulation of the Empire State Building (partial replica). In real life, the steel frame building would perform pretty well in an earthquake. Nonetheless, the chances of a large earthquake happening in New York City are quite negligible.

Welcome to the world’s largest and only 3D earthquake simulation channel on KZbin! My channel focuses on realistic 3D earthquake simulations of a variety of virtual structures and types of buildings from around the world. Some of my work has been featured by various international media news outlets and it has also been used by other large KZbin channels such as GeologyHub, GeoPop and CaSeismograph for educational purposes. This channel’s content has also been featured on the Curiosity Channel in a recent documentary called “Breakthrough: Forecasting the Big One”.
The simulations that I post serve an educational purpose and should be solely treated as such. We should not forget that earthquakes are real world events that can sometimes lead to loss of properties and lives.
The simulations were created in Blender 3D with the bullet constraints builder add-on by Kai Kostack.

In Mexico City we have an inspired tower called "Torre Latinoamericana", it represents the symbol of the mexican modernity from mid 50's, it was built in 1956 and for two decades was the highest skycrapper out of USA and the first on being built only with steel, aluminum and crystal. Was built on a high seismic risk area with an special water injection system in it's base. It has resisted more than 10 earthquakes between 6.5 and 8.2 since 1957. I hope you can make a 3D model of that.

8.1 is a little low but its not invincible, sure it could initially survive a plane the size of the ones that took out the twims but it would be permanently unusable and unstable and probably be dismanteled, worst case scenario the whole block is lost

Earthquake warning system or earthquake early warning system is a system of accelerometers, seismographs, communications, computers and alarms designed to notify adjacent areas of a significant earthquake while the earthquake is in progress. This is not the same as earthquake forecasting, which still cannot produce decisive event warnings. Time delay and wave projection The release of stored elastic strain energy in rapid slip along the fault causes an earthquake. Slip begins somewhere and progresses on the fault surface in all directions, away from the hypocenter. The propagation speed of this fault rupture is slower than and different from the speed of the resulting pressure and shear waves; the pressure wave moves faster than the shear wave. Pressure waves create sudden shock. Shear waves produce periodic motion (at about 1 Hz) that is most destructive to structures, especially buildings with similar resonance periods. Generally, these buildings are about eight stories high. These waves will be strongest at the edges of the slide and can project destructive waves well beyond the fault failure. The intensity of such remote effects depends largely on local soil conditions in the region, and these effects are taken into account when creating the region model, which determines appropriate responses to particular events. Passage security Such systems are currently implemented in urban rail systems such as BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and Los Angeles Metro to determine the appropriate real-time response to an event by the train operator.[1] The appropriate response depends on the duration of the warning, local right-of-way conditions, and the current speed of the train. Japan Japan's Earthquake Early Warning system was implemented in 2006. This means the empire state building would’ve fallen down in Chile’s 8.8 earthquake that we suffered back in 2010. Only one poorly designed 15 stories building collapsed that day in the region of Concepción named “Alto Río”. Cheers to the chilean engineers and architects! 🇨🇱

After the initial scenario where the building remains almost entirely unfazed, what are some long term consequences that would result from this kind of structural trauma? Would it be possible to restore the building to its pre-quake integrity, or will it significantly cut the lifespan of the structure no matter what? Or, would the building even be usable after this, or would it have to be condemned or even demolished? Thanks for doing the ones where you weakened the building so that we could all get that satisfying Horror Jenga moment.

Hi, with the experience I had in the seism of 1985 in Mexico City and following the ACI rules, many buildings that showed cracks or some damage were destined and condemned to be demolished, because in no way they were allowed to be reused for anything. Even the zone where Mexico City is located is classified as very dangerous because it's settled on compressible soils and requires a deep foundation, so repairs would be very expensive and probably won't work as its design demands it. Maybe the soil in New York is more resistant to settlements and allows repairs, but skyscrapers are expensive and require a lot of engineering. That's my opinion. Cheers.

@@nadapenny8592Manhattan Island was scraped bare of soil and sediment within last 20,000 years by glaciation. This mitigates the most dangerous chaotic S waves, settlement, liquefaction, etc. In the 1994 southern California quake, some of the highest ground acceleration occurred at bedrock outcrops. Regardless, the worst damage occurred in young and poorly consolidated sedimentary basins. Same in San Francisco, the hills are not nearly so hazardous as the flats. Reclaimed land is worst.

I think that, even though in this simulation only half of the Empire State Building survived, it would’ve been a major engineering challenge to reuse it or repair it. My guess is that after seeing it would be too expensive and too much work to keep using the other half of the building, the city might be deciding to demolish it and rebuild it from scrap, but making it much stronger and safer than the old skyscraper.

I call BS because the plane that hit the Empire State Building was a B 25 a extra small plane that is equivalent to the length of a mini truck while the planes that hit on 9/11 were two jumbo commercial jets aiming for the towers with a full tank of jet fuel at 500 mph no building is meant to withstand that the twin towers did exceptionally well for how long it stood the Empire building can’t afford a hit like that it would collapse immediately

One thing I reckon the Empire State Building has going for it is that it was intended for air ships to moore to the mast, unfortunately no one asked passengers if they'd enjoy disembarking via a narrow gangplank that high up over the pavement on a cold windy foggy New York morning! Still, I imagine the strength they had to build into the structure works in its favor where it comes to ground movement.... I know (or at least im pretty sure) there isnt a giant I beam up the middle, still seemed like a damn strong building in the first one before it was 'made to fail' as it were. Hopefully people realize the later bits are exaggerated (We all know some people wont read that far into it...and take the later bits at face value...because humans gotta human), even then its a really interesting model and sim!
