These fighting animations and the ones in Shogun are one of key selling points of those games for me, nothing is cooler then watching your soldiers fight in such impression animation!

I once had a redcoat who was perhaps a level 4 veteran, jump up on top of the trenchworks, and kill literally 20 east indian guys while his unit only had like 15 guys left. If I could bestow people with medals this guy would have received the victorian cross. He was a bamf. (a fresher unit from the opposite flank rescued his unit before he had a chance to die) This army's general was a bamf too, which helped.

Lol, awesome video man! It really shows how well they did the individual fighting styles in the game. You should include one or two from a battle with native Americans... seeing a native American catching one of your trained soldiers on the chest with a hatchet is just amazing!

The animation at 1:58 isnt one i've seen before, man that is just fucking brutal! A soldier begging for his life just gets a heel to the face and then a bayonet to the stomach, i love it:P It's like watching a movie... I've been looking for a vid like this, thanks!

@SangerZonvolt I agree with you. It is kind of annoying how soldiers stand and watch, but you have to remember how complex the targeting system and the animation preset is for melee. I like your idea of a "Natural motion to fight" but I think that might be extremely hard to make, because you would then have a near endless amount of combinations to take into account, but I could see this occurring in the future.

i have shown most of the musket vs musket, sword with shield vs musket, sword with shield vs sword with shield. But there are still a fair bit for example one hand sword or axemen animations you should play around with them and you shall find something new. About the part two, i have collected alot of replays containing new animations/ duels but just lacking the motivation or time to capture it using fraps and make it into a montage

I do think they're cool, I just think the sword - sword fights are more fluid (less mis-matched animations and such). I wouldn't change Empire, I like the gunpowder stuff, I was just commenting on the potential for the melee in future titles. ;)

@MrTommo101 You know how long it took to reload a musket from the period? It took about 30-60 seconds for the average soldier. With excessive practice, 30 seconds and below. Now, let me remind you that the soldier wants to be steady while reloading for precision and non-malnfunction. So, lets tie it all together, while your being hacked at and soldiers are bumping and falling into you. Now, would you give a damn about whether you were shooting or fighting with bayonets?

maybe i did exaggerate on the animations a little but if you play it for a while you will notice all the animations are similar and every animation where they go back and forth never has a death consequence so there are no suprises when they just knock each other back to do the cycle again. the longest death animation is the one where the guy stomps on the others face then bayonetts him. cool animations but limited.

Ok They seriously gotta remake Medieval 2 with the new animations! can you imagine knights battling it out on the ground until either one tires and falls, can you imagine the cavalry duels?! With all other total wars before empire they used only one animator, when two units faced off it would end up like a fight in World of warcraft where its just about chance on hit and whichever more powerful unit hit won, whereas with empire two animators worked together and created these duels.

@The5hort5tuff Well, Natural Motion worked well in Backbreaker. And if it can work with over a dozen guys tackling each other for a ball (which I think is more complex than just killing each other) it should be possible for other generes too. The only limitation I see at the moment is the actual speed of the PC/Consoles, but as the grafic seems to reach it´s limit, further ressources could go into animation and A.I.

Sometimes for fun I put 2000 Islamic Swordsman vs. 2000 Sikh Warriors and watch them duke it out. The sword vs sword animations are much better than the musket ones...I can only imagine what Rome II/Shogun II/any other melee focused era will be like.

@SangerZonvolt yes i know right i think the same thing i mean if ur comrade is pinned and ur just standing there wouldnt it be wise too stab the guy whos gonna kill him too prevent a casualty... but then again they prob dont do that cause then it might render melee fights useless has in if u charge the enemy and pin them down then the enemy owns ur guys while theyr ready for the final blow meaning its has if they charged u
