Hospitality is mostly part time already. WTF is she on about.
@willcurtis79862 ай бұрын
There is a difference between part time front of house staff and key roles such as chefs. Yes a hospitality business may employ 10 waiting/bar staff as part time employees and only 2-3 chefs full time, making your statement correct but that doesn't mean the business could function with a 4 day working week for key roles. My pub had 3 chefs working 5 day weeks. We didn't open on Mondays and then we used the quieter days (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) to allow the chefs to alternate a day off on a trading day and made it so they got 2 consecutive days off every 3 weeks whilst ensuring a full team was present for Fridays through to Sundays. If they were to have had a 4 day working week, I'd have had to employ an additional chef, just to cover days off and that person would have had to be head chef level as the original head chef would have been having days off in the busy times. Head chefs cost £40k-£50k for the caliber that I employed and that would have immediately made the business unviable. This is soo typical of labour, when they talk about business its evident that they seem to think that all businesses are like a a big unionised factory. They don't understand that different businesses operate if different ways. This would absolutely work for some business, no question about it. Productivity is important and it CAN make a difference in some jobs but going back to hospitality, a chef having an extra day off, just reduces the work achieved by that person. They aren't going to come in a suddenly be able to produce gravy in half the time because they are well rested.

Switching from a 5-day to a 4-day workweek has made me feel much more productive and motivated, both at work and at home. I use Friday mornings to handle chores and shopping, which frees up the weekend for quality time with my family. This system benefits everyone, including my employer, and gives me the time I need for my fitness routine, which I'm passionate about. Adopting a 4-day workweek has significantly reduced staff turnover, leading to more experienced and satisfied teams. Productivity should be prioritized over the number of hours spent 'at work,' and I hope more employers recognize the potential advantages and profits that come with this approach.

My company started doing this last year in Nov. I still need to work my 37.5 hours just in 4 days. I love having Wednesdays off. My company however adjusted my annual leave. Apparently annual leave is linked to the number of days rather than just the hours so I lost a couple days of annual leave after we switched to 4 days. It is also stressful when other people are off. The 4 day week also has disadvantages. When someone's annual leave overlaps with someone's day off from the 4 day week I find myself doing 3 people's jobs because my team is quite small 😢.

This report is not actually accurate. Employers will be able to ask for a four day week but from what the Government have clarified is that it will NOT be mandatory as employers can refuse based on company needs and workloads. Employees will also work the same hours just over 4 days and not 5, so instead of say an 8 hour working day five days a week they will work 10 hours a day for four days a week but again, it depends on the employer granting the request. My own company already offers a similar scheme anyway as do many other employers already. In our case we can request a four day week, but we still work the same shifts so our working hours currently reduce as does our weekly pay. But again it's at the discretion of the senior management and HR and some who have applied have been refused.

This reminds of that thing called the London living wage that next to no employer offers
@stevem3997Ай бұрын
The 4-day week Labour are offering is NOT the 4-day working week with 80% working hours that has been trialled and was a great success. What they're offering is literally 4x 10 hour days. It's not the same thing and arguably worse than a normal 5-day week.

This is a great step in the right direction. Next we need to discuss real living wages and Universal Basic Income

I hated 5 days and 2 days off on weekend, it felt like 1 day after chores etc. Now I pretty much do 12 hour a day but 5 on then 5 off. I love it!
@jamiedown71572 ай бұрын
I've done this for the past 3 years across 2 jobs, no way i would ever go back to a 5 day work week, i much prefer working an extra hour or 2 on a day i'm already working then getting an extra day off than having to work another day, the fact they say it can't work in hospitality is ridiculous, i work in hopsitality, most people who work in it are part time too or students so it's more than possible.

Instead of a four-day week, the government should increase the number of bank holidays yearly.
@dvidclapperton2 ай бұрын
@@altafahmed3322 Canada have had Canadian independence day, Civic bank holiday, labour day bank holiday and Thanksgiving bank holiday (apart from Christmas bank holidays) in the second half of the year. But the UK only has the August bank holiday (apart from Christmas bank holidays) in the second half of the years. 4-1 in non festive bank holidays Canada vs UK second half of the year we are truly pathetic here in the UK. So yes other countries do get considerably more bank holidays than the UK during the course of the year.

Retail shops and restaurants are open 7 days a week whilst the employees are working 5 days a week. Therefore I don’t see the problem being opened 7 days a week but only working 4 days.

Doing the same hours over 4 days is fine, the problem I have is the effect on customer service for my clients. I see problem and positives and I’m not sure which camp I find myself as an employer.

Perhaps The Labour Party should focus on processing legislation that the Brexit Tories blocked like regulating fire and rehire. Get back to basics. Deal with the fundamentals. Stop repetitions of what P&O did to the British seamen despite Brexit!

Good luck applying that to care work. Back when I was HCA in 2014-2015, being always short staffed I would sometimes do 6x 12.5hr shifts within a week.
@kamilgracz2 ай бұрын
I work 4 on 4 12hrs shift and it’s great no complaints. Yes it is a long day but I can still do some stuff after work and then when I’m done with the shift I have 4 days off. If I book 4 days off holidays it automatically turns into 12 days.

Saying it doesn’t work in retail I don’t think as actually true. I think retail needs to change and actual if they reduced the number of days they were open and extended opening hours it would actually be super helpful for people like me who work a regular 8-5 job and find any day other than Saturday a struggle to do all your shopping on.

I work 6 days a week, 10 hour shifts, 11 on a Sunday because I have ordering and inventory stock counts to do, there’s no way on this green earth that I would be allowed to have a 5 day work week let alone a 4 day one without the government actually making them
