Can you have an orgasm when you're paralyzed? (and other questions that I get asked a lot!)

When I was in my 20s, I would get at least one question about sex every single time I went out to a bar with my friends. Most of the questions were from guys after they had gotten drunk enough to get the courage to come ask me.
Even though the drunk guys were annoying, I knew that the questions they had were from a place of genuine curiosity. What I have realized over the years is that EVERYONE wonders about sex with a disability.
And because my channel is ALL ABOUT authentic vulnerability I decided to take the time to answer some questions about my sex life that EVERYONE is wondering but is too afraid to ask!

I shared 19 years of my life with a woman with a muscular disease and she was afraid she would lose me on several occasions: (1) when she just met me, (2) when she needed extra oxygen and (3) when she needed medication that was pumped into her vein 24/7. She never lost me, but I lost her: she died in April 2021. And by the way... we had a wonderful sex-life. She had full sensation, so she could enjoy it as much as I did.

My sister understands these issues because she has Spina Bifida, and she has the full capacity to have orgasms by using her brain!!! I am an able-bodied female who previously had full function up until my mid forties, but now I am nearing menopause, and I am struggling with loss of feeling and function…Now, It feels as if my entire sensual body has died already. I feel grief, and I miss the good feelings, and menopause hasn’t even happened yet.

I'm a retired anaesthetic nurse from Scotland. I think your an amazing young woman. To have become paralysed at just 13 years of age it would have been completely understandable if you'd just withdrawn right into yourself. You've obviously had amazing parents to have encouraged you to become a positive role model for paralysed people, especially young ones. I adore your sense of everything is to be laughed about especially embarrising accidents. I'm betting your an amazing mum and I think your husband is very lucky to have such a wonderful wife. My best advice is to never apologize for your disability. Own all parts of it and set the tone going into a relationship that these things are part of your life (wheelchair, bowel, bladder), and they can take it or leave it!

I don't think my wife was ever able to have an orgasm. It was quite a few years before we were able to talk about it honestly. She was diagnosed with MS about a year and 5 months after we were married. Of course, then we were able to trace symptoms to back before we met, and I suspect failure to reach orgasm was one of them, if I had known. I pride myself on being a non-selfish lover, and so the situation is hard to understand, but I think your video has contributed to my understanding. My wife was always an enthusiastic sex partner, though she didn't masturbate or enjoy sex toys. I just thought she was a "quiet" orgasmer, which I had seen before. I inquired after her satisfaction, and she declared herself satisfied. As her feeling diminished, she complained I wasn't giving her enough foreplay, so it seemed she was getting something out of it. Eventually, it became obvious that no amount of foreplay could compensate.

I was involved with a woman who was paraplegic when I was young. She was very quick to have an orgasm, I think because we were very keen on each other at first, so she was sort of 'fired up' even before we started ! She had a lot of muscle wastage in her legs. Unfortunately it didn't work out for us but she was a lovely person. I think if we had talked as openly as you do, it might have gone better.

Thank you for sharing your most inter-personal experiences with us. I have spent 30 years and countless hours in the Operating Room working with surgeons as a trained RN and now a consultant for a major healthcare company helping patients with spinal injuries. I see the patients when they arrive to the OR in need of serious care, but I rarely get see the outcomes on how well these patients do long term. We all take our jobs very seriously in the OR and we want to provide the best possible care to give patients the best chance possible. That depends entirely on whether or not the worry is grounded in reality. If you meet someone and you start worrying before you even know that person there's a good chance that's a you problem. Granted by the time you're considering marriage that should be already worked through.

I know SSDI and SSI are not enough to live on but having Medicare is a huge help and not something disabled people can do without. I had a girlfriend who had two poop accidents during sex and without any disability being involved whatsoever. She was more upset about it than I was. And told me a few weeks later that she cried about it afterwards when she was alone and I was no longer around(I don't know if that was the first time or the second time.) It didn't really bother me too much because I don't have a weak stomach for stuff. We cleaned it and she did laundry, no biggie. If anything I kind've thought of it as a compliment, like I sent her to Neptune to the degree that she pooped herself lol🤙 And this actually happened two different times!

My brother in law was in a relationship with a woman who became paralyzed and they both were able to enjoy sex because she said a lot of it was imagination based as well. She also could enjoy other physical things during sex like the touching part. I think a lot of people forget that intimacy is a major thing that is so important and it's not all about actual intercourse. First, yes, you are quite beautiful and your outlook is unquestionably healthy. Second, when it comes to whether or not your husband is fulfilled, I don't think many people have given much thought to the fact that he would be a fool not to be fulfilled. He's under no pressure to "perform", so sex is without the pressure therefore extremely liberating. More to the point, if he's any kind of man, sans performance anxiety, his concentration is now freed to be on you, not on himself. From a man's perspective, your husband is in one of the best positions a married man can be in. He gets to sleep with a beautiful woman, doesn't have to worry about her cheating on him, can use his imagination to make her happy sexually, and most important, he gets to take care of her in a way that expresses his boundless love. In short, he's a very lucky guy. And God bless you M'am, you're an example of greatness in womankind.

Another paralysed individual on YT answered some questions and was offended that she would be asked this kind of thing on the 2nd or 3rd date. But if someone really likes you and potentially signs up for monogamy resulting in a life of celibacy, that would be quite important I'd say.

From a man's perspective. I am married with kids and my wife is a 3 time cancer survivor. There has been many times in our marriage where I wasn't fulfilled sexually and at times it made me really frustrated. I will say that I never explored or considered cheating on my wife because of it as she is my best friend and I would expect the same from her if our roles were reversed. She got cancer about 5 years after we were married and right when she was pregnant with our second, so I had no way of knowing that she would have many health problems. You, however, were paralyzed before you were married, so he knew what he was in for and he should have realized what he was in for. All that being said, no person is worth anyone's time or effort if they won't respect you or the relationship enough to not be faithful. You have a great man at your side. Go to the pet store and get some Vetricin Gel to apply to potential contact wounds. My amputee wife uses it each night before bed for pressure spots from her prosthetic. It also works on inflamed hair folicles, too. Some paras use it when they cath. It is very safe. Hypochlorous acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body. Love your channel.

It is anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and can defeat MRSA, Covid, staph, strepp, yeasts/fungus, and more. Women use it on infected eye lash follicles. When you get those contact wounds on your skin, apply it. It can help reduce UTIs, too. It is far better than antibiotics ointments. It does not cause microbes to develop resistance/tolerance to it. Google hypochlorous acid. Contact/pressure wounds can be so hard to heal.

As a male, married 32 years, separated for 2, and unfulfilled for many years, I want to say that all I ever wanted from my wife was her willingness to share her body with me. The sense of rejection when someone is never in the mood really hurts. I feel like I could be completely fulfilled by a paralyzed person. Mostly what's important is approval and smiles!

OK. I am going to try and unpack this so that you don't fall into the same hole again, because there are certain things that guys do that can wind up with this happening and once it happens it can be very difficult to get out of: 1] Sometimes guys project there own shames on to women around sex. If something does not turn you on, just say it is not YOUR thing without making any judgements about the act itself or the person suggesting it. We just all have our own turn ons and turn offs, but by going 'yuck that is disgusting', you could stifle variation and fun. 2] Operate good boundaries, no means no. For you and them. This builds trust and opens up intimacy. 3] Communicate about what you like and how you like it. More pressure, less pressure, faster, slower, here, not there, not today thanks, maybe another time. 4] Ensure that you are affectionate without loading that affection with an expectation that sex will occur. Because it quickly comes across as:- 'you only cuddle me as a sign that you want s3x and not as a sign of love or support'

Damn that sounds rough as hell. But you definitely have the right attitude about the situation. Sex and all it entails is great but it’s not the only thing that matters in life. It’s not a measurement of love merely an aspect of it. As my health teacher told us way back in seventh grade. “Love is not having sex with someone after a fun date. Love is getting up at two in the morning on a work night to change your child’s dirty diaper so that your wife can get a few extra hours of sleep”. I’m glad to see the strength of character that isn’t swayed by the modern mindset of pleasure first. Honor second. I’m glad to see that this malady hasn’t broken you but made you strong. Personally I couldn’t cheat on my wife even if she couldn’t have sex with me because I love her and couldn’t bare the thought of doing something so horrible to her. And I believe with all my heart that your husband is like me in that regard. Despite the stereotype we’re labeled with, guys do love and do feel emotions we just express them differently. And if he is a man he will stick with you for life because he took that vow knowing that this was how the relationship would work. Sex may not work in some aspects for you two but you both have more to you than just the physical act and it shows. (Sex isn’t that big of a deal once you reach a certain age anyway. You more often than not just wanna chill and enjoy some hobbies together. So from a guy who can feel sex I’ll give you that bit of comfort. It’s good but not so much that it’s like going without air. More like going without sugar. The more often you go without it the more you realize that you don’t need it. You just enjoy it for the dopamine and endorphin hit.). Anyway I enjoyed hearing your take and experience on the subject. Not paralyzed myself but no less empathetic and inspired by your honesty and boldness. All the best to you. I am a quadriplegic and I've been having crazy explosive orgasms. But they just started after years of being disabled. I've been in a wheelchair for 30 years and I recently figured out how to have an orgasm. Not that I haven't had sex all these years but just recently I had some changes in my physiological condition and was able to do a little bit of experimenting, and I found that I have orgasms that last way longer than anything I ever had before and definitely longer than my partner. On average they're about 20 minutes lo. This is the orgasm not just the sex, and they can go up to an hour. If I'm not careful, actually they will come back when I'm least expecting it and just sort of hit me when I'm in the middle of a conversation or having dinner. It's a completely new world for me. @@EmpoweredPara I got hurt when I was 20. I was sexually active at the time and breaking my neck as you can, imagine, was a huge blow. My doctor at the time recommended using a condom catheter so that I could empty my bladder. Which I did for a couple decades. Every day putting on a new one. It’s a little odd, because I am not a complete injury, but I can’t move anything below my level of injury. I can feel, but not in the way that you would necessarily want to feel. I can’t feel hot. I can’t feel doll I can’t feel warm or sharp. What I feel is pressure and it usually comes in the form of pain. When I’ve been touched down in that area, I get this feeling of pressure but can’t localize it so this is how it went for about 30 years. I began to get bladder infections on a regular basis, and my doctor recommended going to a super pubic. I did that about four years ago if you’re doing the math I am 54 now. After a couple months of having the catheter off, I was noticing something that was kind of scary. I thought I might be sick or something because every time somebody washed me up in that particular area, I would get these flashes of light behind my eyes. This is about the time I met someone, I contacted my doctor and told him that I was thinking about being intimate, and I haven’t really maintained that area very well as far as whether or not, it works since my surgery to put the superpubic in. He recommended using a penis pump about once a week to maintain my abilities to perform. I worked up the courage and asked my assistant to put that on for me one evening. Thinking I would only do it for a couple minutes to make sure I didn’t do anything weird to my skin. After about 30 seconds, I began to get really scared. I started having the shaking feeling all through my body. It felt honestly like a stroke. I couldn’t really control what was going on. My heart was racing. My arms were stretch straight out and I began to realize that it wasn’t a stroke. It was an orgasm, no foreplay no lead up or build up. It just started. Then it continued and continued and continued. After removing the pump, it still went on and on into the night for about three hours until I took some Valium and it knocked me out. The next day I woke up and it started rolling again, I went for about three days with orgasms hitting me about every hour and lasting for 10 minutes to 30 minutes. At a time I could be sitting in a meeting, eating riding in the car. It was terrifying to be honest. Contacted my doctor and he said try using it again and see if it changes anything. It did oh my God I did it. I thought I was having crazy orgasms before this threw me into another realm of existence for about an hour. And then stopped. I now have full control over this new ability. If I use the pump, I have an orgasm mind blowing orgasm. There is no build up it just starts. On top of all of this, I’ve begun to feel my body in new ways. I think it is creating pathways that have been long dormant. I’m a research scientist in a tech company and I am absolutely fascinated by this and think that there’s some sort of research that should be done but as far as I can tell, no one has ever experienced anything like this. It’s thrilling and exciting and I wish I would’ve been able to do it when I first got injured but honestly, I think it probably was the journey I was on and it may not have worked then. At least that’s what I tell myself.

Yes but did you find the person to be intimate with? Lol. Sounds like you’re doing ok by yourself but would you have the same effect with a human male instead? I ask because I’m a 70 year old widow (don’t look it, don’t feel it mentally, physically is another story) and for quite a number of years my husband was unable to manage intercourse due to severe back injuries. After his death my daughter suggested sex toys but I want the other 97% of the guy not just 8” of him lol. I envy you though. Maybe if I could manage your deal I’d relax a bit. Good luck!
