Temples were used as places of education, and various subjects, ranging from Maths, Philosophy, language were taught. You were taught by renowned teachers called "gurus" and they'd take care of your occupation for the entire time. All you had to do at the end was give a "gurudakshina" to your teacher. This could mean anything.
