I’ve watched lectures from shaykh Hamza Yusuf of astronomy, logic, philosophy, all the Islamic sciences and seems to be knowledgeable in mathematics and hard sciences! Indeed, he is arguably the most knowledgeable human being I’ve ever come across in my life!

YQ created more confusion than providing clarity. He narrated incidence from Islamic history of Muslims in Abyssinia and proved Muslims made Du’a for Najashi (non-Muslim) in battle against his own nephew who wanted to topple Najashi and subsequently eliminate Muslims. He also admits no one in the current context can be like Najashi. With all respect to YQ, he is wrong when it comes to voting for someone to rule by other what Allah SWT has revealed. The Muslims in Abyssinia did not act against the Islamic ruling at the time and YQ is clear that we do not have much about the history of Muslims in Abyssinia, so we cannot make Islamic rulings based on their actions, how he comes to a conclusion then! Add to it Allah SWT in the Quran says that we must rule by Islam. So are we supposed to take YQ's conclusion based on an event where its reality and everything around it is not well documented but we leave alone the ruling of Allah SWT that ruling by Man-made system is Tagoot (طاغوت)!! And I do NOT say that people voting are kuffar, I say they are sinful and the magnitude of the sin depends on their believe in their action which is only Allah SWT knows, but voting for someone to legislate by Tagoot is haram.
