Maria Theresa was one of the most powerful women in history. She reformed and modernized her empire all while having 16 children, 11 of whom were daughters, all named Maria. While the boys were educated to be world leaders the girls were taught to be good consorts and obedient wives though they often choose not to be. 5 died tragically young, two rested power from their husbands and ruled states, three became great patrons of the arts and one, Marie Antionette became Queen of France and lost her head in the revolution.

Luka Pecanac my best friend in junior high was Mary Ellen Walton. Not a day went by that someone didn’t shout “goodnight Mary Ellen” or “goodnight Johnboy” in the hallway. Anyhow all women in her family were named Mary with their middle name starting with E. However they all went by both names. They were Catholic. For those who are too young to get the reference there was a show called The Waltons and most shows had them saying goodnight to each other...a sister was named Mary Ellen and the oldest son was Johnboy.

Yeah, I was noticing that. How could anyone tell them apart in the art work? It's only in the personal sketches and such, is when you see personal definable facial features. Fun fact about Maria Amalia that I have to share: Despite not getting married to the man she fell in love with, Maria Amalia certainly didn't let history repeat itself and gave her oldest daughter, Carolina, permission to marry the man Carolina loved, Prince Maximilian of Saxony (even though he wasn't an heir to a throne). That's just awesome.

@@ruth078, Maria Elisabeth was unhappy because she wasn’t given any position by her mother and brother Joseph II, not because she was unmarried. Leopold II made that clear in his diary after their brother Maximilian was assured the Archbishop-Elector position. Liesl threw a huge tantrum right after that because everyone in the family was appointed to some kind of position, whether direct or through marriage, whereas she wasn’t. It was a position she was after, not marriage. And there could have been, like in Prague or in Hungary. Even with the centralization policy. And she particularly didn’t want to be left as a “nobody” in Joseph II’s court, a brother who was not nice to her. It was clear to her that there were possible concessions but her mother and brother won’t do it. In Innsbruck, she was in some sort of First Lady social role, and when Leopold assumed the family head role, she was given a more prominent role and a bigger allowance. You see the old Elisabeth back in Innsbruck vs the one in Vienna after the smallpox. And gaining weight later on was a family trait - their parents and most of the siblings got fat, and not necessarily because they were miserable. And she still had royal suitors, post smallpox. Karl of Zweibrucken - hahaha- and her cousin Benedetto of Savoy. Karl could not be considered due to the Bavaria issue (just like in sister Amalia’s case) and MT and Joseph did not want to be generous to a Liesl-Benedetto match, like they did with Mimi and her penniless prince. And Amalia and Liesl liked parties so that habit was already there, pre smallpox. She also sort of adopted a baby girl.

I don’t know how Catholics do these things but Jews have to say quick prayers before they die. I remember watching a video on the St Jude website and there was a five-year-old boy who’s parents told him he would be an angel soon and he remained calm. Actually, Maria Christina’s monument (from Albert) is a cenotaph. Maria Christina is buried in the Imperial crypt in Vienna, beside Albert. You can actually see the little coffin of her daughter, Maria Christina Theresa, in the Maria Theresien crypt.

Thank you for the upload. In my family´s art collection are two original oil paintings from this time period since many generations. One is from 1759 and shows Maria Anna when she was around 20 years old. The other one is from 1766 and shows Marie Antoinette at the age of 11. This paintings are completely unknown in public circles. The painting of Marie Antoinette is truly lightening up the room, everything that meets the eye emanates refined, serene harmony, while the one of Maria Anna is giving you an impression of loneliness, sadness and resignation. Marie Antoinette was painted by Johann Sigismund Friedrich, 2. Fürst von Khevenhüller-Metsch, a Habsburg family friend and Envoy of the Austrian Emperor in Portugal and Torino. The painter of Maria Anna is unknown. I would very much like to show you this beautiful paintings but unfortunately it is not possible to post them here. Amalia's my favorite out of all the Archduchesses. She always had my sympathy because of her abysmal relationship with Maria Theresa, and my sympathy for her only grew after I discovered that she was married against her will to the Duke of Parma. I always wonder if her relationship with Maria Theresa might have improved at least a little had she been allowed to marry for love like her sister Maria Christina. Oh well, we'll never know. But I do find it interesting that despite her terrible relationship with Maria Theresa, Amalia was kind of like her in the sense that she was the real ruler of Parma like her mother in Austria. It was something interesting to learn and worth noticing. However, the daughter I have the most complex feelings for is Maria Christina. Initially, I had liked her to a degree, seeing as how she was a huge sponsor of the arts and the like, but once I found out she was Maria Theresa's favorite and how the favoritism was painfully obvious...well, all I can say is that my opinion changed drastically. It's because if there's one thing I absolutely can't stand, it's favoritism that a parent has towards only one of their children. But then I realized that even if Christina was the obvious favorite, to the point where she was able to marry for love while her sisters could not, it really isn't her fault. She didn't choose to be her mother's favorite, and really, any of the kids could have been Maria Theresa's favorite. The favorite just so happened to be Christina. So in the end, even if I still don't like Christina to a degree because of her being her mother's obvious favorite and I understand how her siblings felt towards her because of it, I remind myself that it's really Maria Theresa's fault for even playing favorites in the first place, not because Christina wanted to be the favorite. Everything in the world is full of gray borders, after all. Nothing's black and white.

Don’t worry, Maria Amalia loved her husband very much. Role of Karl of Zweibrucken was greatly exaggerated in the books. Yes, it wasn’t Mimi’s fault she was the favorite but she was really unpleasant to her siblings and even to their mother. One would think that with all those advantages, she can be more generous in spirit but she wasn’t. And that made me dislike her. Her dowry was not from her mother but from her brother Joseph’s inheritance from their father. Joseph was the sole heir and he allotted part of it for the establishment of his siblings. Mimi got half of the amount allotted.

It is well known that Amalia hade her mother for forcing her in to an arranged marriage. Amalia is worthy of great admiration, oposing a repressing system of arranged marriage denying women sexual freedom, by having lovers. Within that system, she was a true role model.

She loved her husband despite being in an arranged marriage. Their marriage wasn’t without problems but it was clear that she did.

4:26 Sounds like she had Hypopara-thyroidism. This is a very rare disease. Hypopara is a disease that effects calcium, magnesium and Vitamin D3 levels in the body. Symptoms include: Tetney,twitching, tingling, muscle cramps,fast heart rate,high blood pressure, seizures, stroke and heart attack....ect I have never heard of someone from the past having this condition! Wow! So horrible. It was probably better that the poor thing passed away, for that time. This condition is extremely horrible and the poor child probably would have suffered tremendously if she had lived!

I have hypoparathyroidism because of thyroid surgery, i am dependent to calcium supplements, and only a Calcium push injection can help with seizures, something at that era didn't have. I can only imagine how painful it was for her to experience it, I am guessing it started when they stopped giving her milk? While hypoparathyroidism can lead to seizures, it can also be manageable with enough calcium, so food rich in calcium can help.

@@de-vine2168 It's an emergency thing they administer when you're experiencing severe twitching. They give while on ecg because it's kinda dangerous to your heart. Been through it a couple of times.

People love Marie Antoinette precisely because she was average. She was a parody of Versailles. The idea of a political figure being intellectually unimpressive and thinking about gossip, clothes, food, and perfume, intrigues people. Her admirers love that she is average and yet at the centre of attention. She was the truth of the aristocratic system and I think deep down she knew what her purpose was. Maria Anna would not gravitate toward that kind of materialistic environment if Versailles. She represents the ideal of the aristocracy. The best and brightest in Europe. The noble breed.

This custom involves Catholic baptisms. Their actual names follow Maria; in France, it's Marie. (For men, it's Joseph.) My own Christian name was Marie Stephanie at my baptism, but my given name is Stephanie Marie (i.e. my middle name is Marie). It's still common among French Canadians. So, no, the Empress did not, in fact, name all her daughters Maria.

Catholics .. and, oddly enough, at one time, also Jews. Miriam and Maria, are often cognomen 'titles' rather than personal names; by Roman and Hebrew conventions, names tended to have a meaning .. rather than just an appealing sound (for the mother). Devotion to Mary, Mother of the Lord Jesus, was very popular and this added to the convention - where males, as well as females, had or took Mary somewhere among their names even in one family .. Mario, for instance.
