Through most of history, Kings selected wives for their royal blood and political significance. Women they actually liked and were attracted to were relegated to being mere mistresses. These women were usually local aristocrats or even commoners who would not be considered contenders to be consort. The majority of monarchs had mistresses and their wives usually looked the other way, safe in the knowledge that their place as Queen could never be usurped. But a number of royal courtesan did come to wield great power. And on a few, incredibly rare occasions the stars to aligned to put the King’s lover on the throne. Let’s meet 8 royal mistresses who successfully became Queens.
Inês de Castro Posthumous Queen of Portugal
Christina Abrahamsdotter, Queen of Sweden
Anne Boleyn, Queen of England
Jane Seymour, Queen of England
Catherine Howard, Queen of England
Karin Månsdotter, Queen of Sweden
Catherine I, Empress of Russia
Camilla Shand, Queen of the UK & Commonwealth Realms

Camilla is irrelevant to me, but what really shocks me is that Henry fought for *SEVEN* years and blew up the country for it… And he just threw Anne away. It would be funny if she wasn’t murdered so tragically. It is the perfect karma that Anne and Henry’s daughter became arguably the strongest ruler in England history.

I also love the reason he claimed to want to divorce Catherine of Aragon was because he was married to his brother. Never mind that there was precedent for it throughout other houses of Europe with papal dispensation (which they did have). He was like, “It’s totally fine for me to marry a woman when I slept with her sister!” Until it wasn’t, because he also didn’t get a son from Anne.

Catherine Parr is definitely a lot more than a nursemaid. She, like Catherine of Aragon before her, was one of the wives Henry trusted to leave as Regent when he went on campaign. She was a loving stepmother to *all* his children, reconciling him with both Mary and Elizabeth. She was a published author in her own right, with her work printed by the king’s printer. She also clearly learned something from the downfalls of some of her predecessors, as when some of her reformist ideas landed her in hot water, she went to plead her case to the king, humbling herself before him, and the appeal worked, with him calling off guards meant to arrest her personally. In fact, Tudor historian Claire Ridgway suggests that she was a combination of a lot of the positive traits of the wives that came before her.

@@moondivine2288 but she was still atypical for a Queen, and the reasoning given in the video had nothing to do with Henry’s marital status. And an unmarried/widowed King could have a mistress too, because kings didn’t dare marry commoners in most cases.

@@cakt1991 but Henry isn’t most kings lol. He did split from the church when he wanted to marry Anne Boleyn. Because of that Henry’s material status does count. From a book I read on his six wives, when Henry meet Catherine Parr he simply wanted a companion, so Lindsey wasn’t wrong there. Catherine at her end was in love with someone else. She and Henry got married with her being a commoner, a rich one still, not being an issue. Catherine might have started because Henry wanted a nursemaid but, she eventually became more than that. On another note Anne of Cleves was also dismissed because her marriage with Henry wasn’t consummated. Because of that Lindsey is only counting women who are having sexual relations with the king before marriage.

Thank you for acknowledging that Katherine Howard was raped and probably later coerced. So often she's talked about as a grown woman who was just promiscuous. The reality is that she, like many others at the time, was a sexually abused child. And within her family, she was just a political pawn. Most of the women were, but at least there was some evidence of familial feeling. There's really none when it comes to Katherine. I've always felt very sorry for her.

Not always, as in the case of Henry, he just decided he did not want his wife anymore so it makes no difference even though the start of his first marriage was good. Honestly, these men just followed their hormones in many ways. Their original wives took marriage seriously the majority of the time and had to remain faithful or else while their husbands could do whatever they wanted. The problem was that society treated having mistresses as "normal" or just something men do. That is the same attitude the now King of England had from the start. Basically other princes and kings had mistresses, so why cant he. This attitude does not work for us normal people, but for royals somehow their wives just had to grin and bare it.

@S B She brought a dowry that was paid in half to her marriage with Arthur. Her father then dragged his feet to pay the other half for ten years. By the time Henry VII died she was planning to return to Spain and become a nun. Henry married her shortly after becoming King. It’s debated if he ever got the remaining 100,000 from Spain as they were no longer as advantageous of a match after the death of her mother and brother in law Phillip, who took over Castille. In fact by 1514 Katherine after all of her fathers broken promises decided to "forget Spain and everything Spanish." She could do this due to having a joint coronation with Henry. It was unusual for Queens to be coronated prior to delivering their first heir during this time period, for exactly the reasons Henry would discover. His haste in marrying Katherine and making her his Queen in spite of only getting half the dowry of his brother, knowing full well that he was unlikely to ever receive the rest, which is highly debated if he ever did made it an unwise match. When Henry inherited the throne from his father we know that Katherine’s original dowry was already spent. By all contemporary accounts he married Katherine because he loved her. He could have made another alliance with far less strings attached that would have been far more beneficial financially and didn’t involve Spain that have proven to be untrustworthy and in the midst of political turmoil.

This lady deserves more attention, since she actually put her influence over Henri IV to good use and become one of the reasons the French Wars of Religion finally ended. She did so much good as a mistress-it’s so sad to think of what she could have done as Queen of France and never got the chance to accomplish.

She wasn’t an almost queen though. She was married to someone far down the line of succession. The category I would use for her would be royal wives that weren’t queens. I’d like to see that kind of video too, I love her story. I think she would’ve made a good queen, though if she were in the right position. Her and her husband seem like they would make a good partnership, and I think he would’ve made a good king.

I can't speak for everyone, but I'd adore a follow-up to this with the "Close, But No Cigar" ladies. (Not that you're lacking for content, most likely, but this could potentially be an ongoing deep dive into the long-term mistresses of royals. After all, there were plenty of 'illegitimate' marriages among the Hanovarians, as you mentioned in your videos on them. ^^;;; )

There was one lady who did successfully refuse her way to the throne. Maria Eugenia de Palafox y Kirkpatrick kept saying no to sleeping with Napoleon III, until he gave in and married her making her Empress Eugenie of France. I've also heard/read that this may also have applied to Queen Elizabeth Woodville (wife of Edward IV; mother of Edward V; and mother-in-law of Henry VII). Very informative video.

That first story is one of the few where I feel sorry for the king. He had no say in who he could marry and already loved someone else first. He was just doing his obligation with his wife. It's sad because they had no say in who they could marry and just had to hope they'd learn to love the person with time. 😢 He lost his wife and his love. Probably went insane with grief. Because he probably loved the queen a little or at least her death would still hurt. They should turn that into a movie.

No, Galícia was a reign by its own right until 1800, and was north of Portugal. The reign it's now mostly Spanish territory, but Portugal have a small part of this past kingdom. And in this time Spain isn't Spain, but have smallish kingdoms that could or could not be allied at the time (Leão, Castela, Navarro, etc). So, Ines was from Galícia.

@@leticiaduarte9840 ??? galicia was not a reign on its own until the 1800, thats insanely wrong. Ines was from galicia of course no one is disputing that, the video says galicia is nowadays northern portugal which is historically wrong today AND back then because back when ines was born, galicia was already part of the kingdom of castille (which later became spain)

Refreshing to see the British royal family allow divorcees to marry into the family after how much trouble it has caused in the past. (Though I’m still glad Edward VIIl abdicated to be with twice-divorced Wallis Simpson. I think he would’ve been a disastrous King, even as a figurehead.) The divorces amongst themselves probably helped turn the tide within, while general public perception of divorce has also changed drastically in the last 50 years. Thank goodness; all of my uncles have been divorced at least once. I wouldn’t be blessed with my uncles-by-marriage if they hadn’t, and my blood-uncles who have both divorced twice would be miserable and their children worse off. My step-cousins will still always be my cousins. I don’t think it’s shameful or vulgar to end a bad marriage so both people can be free to be happy with better partners. I’m not cool with cheating, though, or leaving someone out of nowhere. Relationships take work, but when it’s beyond fixing, it’s wise and fair to mutually decide to go your separate ways. Princess Diana was SO unhappy in her marriage with Charles. She deserved so much better, especially a long, happy, fulfilling life.
