One of the best films ever ever made, in my book at least. Have seen it a dozen of times already - and will now watch again. Romance, comedy and Englishness of a certain kind at its most entertaining. Perfectly scripted, shot and acted. Poor Julian Sands, never appeared in anything as excellent as this again.

My all time favourite movie. Julian Sands is a Hunk. Helena Bonham Carter is a typical English ROSE.
@thinkingallowed70428 ай бұрын
The term 'English rose' has lost all of its original meaning. It used to refer to a delicate pink complexion, associated with fine features and blue eyes.. In other words, an Anglo-Saxon appearance. Bonham Carter is dark eyed, dark haired, strong jawed (lantern jawed) and not pale of complexion at all. She is of Jewish descent. She is a dusky and exotic looking actress. She has literally none of the physical attributes that are intended to attract the term English rose.
@BerylGhermez7 ай бұрын
@@thinkingallowed7042You must be very young. She was labelled and typecast as the 'quintessential English Rose' for all of her early career to the point she got sick of it and married Tim Burton so she could break that image. Anyone familiar with 1980s and 1990s British cinema would know that. Every magazine then would call her the quintessential English Rose. She was the face of Yardley BECAUSE she had English Rose looks. Her features are all very delicate and she is anything but lantern jawed (that would be Jennifer Aniston and her jaw is very different from Helena's). Helena has a strong jaw, but a small chin. The requirements for being an English Rose are not set in stone so there's a reason that despite being a brown eyed brunette, she was constantly called that in the 80s and 90s by every magazine, publication, director, critic, etc.

Howard's End is my fave Forster novel. It has epic themes.
@newhorizon40663 күн бұрын
Ruth Prawer Jhabvala made a stellar adaptation of Forster's novel (which has a rather messy ending.) This is the rare case when the movie is better than the book it's adapted from. A most well deserved Oscar to the screenwriter.
@pinkpinkpink32Күн бұрын
The novel is great. He just shouldn't have explained their lives, at the end, in my view.

Should have left their future lives to the readers' imagination.
@newhorizon4066Күн бұрын
@@pinkpinkpink32 Cinema executes their storytelling differntly then novels, the former on images, the latter words, ie the reader imagination. Keep that in mind. Imagine the movie ends without the last shot of them back in Florence, audience will feel they're being cheated. There's this fine line, "no more AND no less." A lot of new, read young scripwriters think they can do with less, much less. They're wrong.
