Empty Saddles is a 1936 American Western film directed by Lesley Selander. It is a Buck Jones B Western. (Empty Saddles is also the title of a 1962 Burt Arthur mystery novel).
Finding a deserted cattle ranch, Buck buys it and turns it into a dude ranch. But Buck is quickly in trouble with sheep men who want the ranch and then with outlaws who kidnap the daughter of the wealthy Mr. Grant.
Here we can see that Brooksie could very well act in talkies and had a really beautiful voice, contrary to popular belief that her career (and others) flopped because of unsuitable voice and such. According to IMDB, Louise Brooks had earlier turned down an offer to appear in a Buck Jones western. However, by 1936 she was evidently grateful for the work in what would be one of her last films. She told a reporter, "I am delighted with my role in 'Empty Saddles'. It gives me an opportunity to do something, not just stand around and look pretty. I wouldn't trade it for all the other roles I ever had because I am really acting now, not just being an ornament, and I feel that, at last, I am on the road toward getting someplace in pictures."
Ironically, despite this quote, Brooks would soon afterwards quit acting and leave Hollywood forever. Her last movie was Overland Stage Raiders in 1938, another western, alongside nobody less than John Wayne (still mostly unknown and doing B movies at the time).
