Hello, lovely viewers! This episode of EMTV is actually a snippet from our Live! Session #7, where special guest, Ruijun, was on as we discussed his KZbin channel, compared Erhus, and lastly gave a performance at the end of the Live! session.
This EMTV is also a follow up from our EMTV Ep 7, where only Sungwah appeared to discuss and compared only 2 instruments. EMTV Ep 33, we featured 2 more Erhus, and we had Ruijun and Sungwah to play the Erhus side by side. Great comparison, and a good idea to play them both side by side. The synthetic is a great choice for beginners as it gets the job done and doesnt sound too far off an erhu

I agree that it's not a bad sound necessarily. It's just different. Not erhu-like Sometimes the high notes are comparable to a violin or a muted wind instrument. But thanks for the honesty! You gave a very unbiased look at both skins

The natural snakeskin has much more body and character. It almost sounds like some of the harmonic content in a lower pitch than the fundamental is missing from the synthetic. When Rui Jun goes in to bite a note, the synthetic skin squeals. All the big sound just fades out. It's very soft and weak. When the natural snakeskin hits the same note, it's small, delicate, but very present. The note never feels like it's at risk of being lost. It must be frustrating for the synthetic makers, to be so close! It's not a 'bad' sound. For playing alone in a park, it is fine, or if you live somewhere where customs will not honor the CITES certificate, it is the only option. It is nice to have it as an option--if snakes were to go suddenly extinct, at least it compares.
