I prefer the sound using friction pegs, sounds more like “ Erhu “ and with the brass tuners , sounds more brighter and almost like a ‘ violin’. Both sounds great when played by you , but my preference is with the friction pegs. Well done ! Thank you ! Beginner player

imo friction one gives longer decay, more fluidity on note transition and a bit darker, while metal gear tuner gives characteristic of metal to the instrument, such as openness, brightness, a bit more responsive and faster decay.

in my opinion the notes sound a little crisper and more defined on the erhu with friction pegs.

IMO all beginners should have a erhu with bronze tuners for daily practice. With several practice sessions using a peg erhu using microtuners on the strings. Advanced players should probably have and use both. Everyone should probably use the splendid phone apps for ear training (pitch) and rhythm training, and sight reading. A few simple sentences about sound physics and origin and organization of 12 TET should be given day one, and some references to Music Theory for self study would be of great value. The phone apps are an astonishing advance for developing music proficiency IMO. The great many singing tutorials on KZbin is another resource that was not available 20 years ago to anyone. The bronze tuners and synthetic skins added to older inexpensive instruments would be interesting. A jig could be made for neat cutting of channels through the side for installation of the bronze tuners instead of inletting. As far as I know pegs made for easy installation on bronze tuners are not available. Regular pegs need to be cut down and precisely drilled for fitting and fastening peg handle for bronze tuners, that too would require a jig for an acceptable installation.
