My conclusion after watching this and reading the comments is that no body read the description that has all the info they were crying about and provides and alternative to BFs filtering methods and people gotta stop being whimps and just install this and see if they like it or it works for them. Just an FYI for anyone running larger heavier rigs. I've been testing EmuFlight on my 7 inch LR rig and not quite sure what the major difference is yet but I went from having semi hot motors after a long run to cool AF motors doing the same trip.

I noticed in the firmware list the it supports HELIOSPRING. That is actually what I find most interesting. Joshua would have been well served to flash a HELIO board and test that. Most of us have assumed that HELIO was totally dead. If this can resurrect it and provide something for the old helio boards that is in active development, and especially utilize the IMU-f, then I'm ready to dig a helio out of my drawer and give it a try. Thanks for the video. Never would have know it existed.

Lol. Good stuff. Not much difference on the 5 inch quads. I think the micros and the 7inch and up is where it shines. With the imuf filtering it helps out the micros a lot where you can't really get rpm filter. But even with betaflight that's all changing now. Both good in my opinion though. Haven't tried raceflight yet.....

I switched to emuflight on my 6 inch and it flies great right off the rip. I was having some issues with it on betaflight but I'm sure if I took the time to blackbox and tune I could have gotten it to fly the same or better but I like the fact I could flash put in my settings and fly.

Does it have GPS Rescue, did that feature make it into the code before it forked or has it been merged? Are there any features (apart from the different filter and pid implementation) that betaflight has and emuflight hasn't? Will it continue to merge new features that pop up in betaflight? Is there any technical documentation or explanation anywhere (apart from hearsay and hype) that explains in technical terms exactly *what* are the differences in implementation and *why* the alternative implementation of the flight control code is expected to behave different/better/worse?

Betaflight 4.1 will have rpm filters which are a game changer for it. The details of the IMUF filtering have been secret in the past but now that they're open source anybody could see what they're doing. I'd like to do an interview with the devs to hear more about it.

Emu devs are not notch-haters like Helio, so that's a good thing because they are just better than lowpasses (proven and provable if anyone wants to challenge). They are testing out some cool things. Just need to get to a spot that if someone has a new trick to improve flight performance, cool, log in an A-B comparison and show it. It is just that simple. What is cool is they are open to dudes like me doing that stuff and posting (for better or worse). They don't have a marketing motivation as Helio did. Not interested in the spin game like before. I respect that a lot. So if anyone thinks anything is better, cool we have Blackbox in BF and Emuflight. Show me as I want to see it at 2000 fps (logging rate) and not just obsolete 60 or 120 fps (video). No knocks on a video like this, but if a conclusion was "wow this is better", then the next step is to look at the logs and see how and why. Our human bias is too strong otherwise.

@@uavtech From my initial tests, it seems their filtering methodology works better out of the box on larger props with a lower frequency noise profile. I'll try to get some A/B logs going, but my initial flights were encouraging. I've always struggled on getting clean footage with larger props with Betaflight, and Emuflight was pretty clean out of the box. On 5" I can't say I can tell a big difference, but it's not noticeably worse than 4.1 with the RPM filters which is actually saying quite a lot. I need to put some more time in on it, but so far, I think it's a viable option for noisier/beat up quads, and stuff with a lot of low frequency noise. It seems to retain decent stick feel and solid prop-wash handling even when successfully filtering out the low frequency stuff, which has been my struggle with larger props and traditional filtering methodologies. I still feel Betaflight 4.1/RPM filters with a good secondary filter tune is superior on a good 5" setup, but honestly the difference is not massive. I'm interested to see where the devs for Emuflight take it. The other thing I like about Emuflight is more philosophical. They're young devs without a ton of experience, and I love to see new blood taking up the development mantle. I think it behooves us as a community to encourage experimentation and development in a productive environment, and do our best not be constructive in our dialogue. The development community as whole is often pretty opinionated and often a bit rough around the edges when it comes to social skills (i say this as 15+ year web development veteran :p not speaking specifically about this hobby) and that can often leave a bad impression on new developers. As you say the Emuflight guys have been pretty positive and open to feedback, so I hope we don't abuse that as a development community to the point where they regret it :D.

You are correct they have a Gyro built in the head BUT they have duel gyros that are offset. Long ago they was running the MPU6000 but now days they are born with the SSG IMU gyro that RF uses... Don't forget they are now born with F7 chips and some even being born with a F7 and as they grow develop a F4 that just handles pecking and kicking.

Emuflight really shines at 32k/32k and gave all those Helio Spring controllers laying around a second life. If you really want to see a difference, try a default settings comparison on a 6-7" rig.

I do think EMUF will have more noticeable effect on quads that are flying worse to begin with. At the end of this video, I conclude that there doesn't seem to be much difference in part because the quad is flying pretty well even on BF 4.0 defaults.

I've had Mocking birds knock my toothpicks out the air a few times but never had a hawk or any bird bother my bigger 4 and 5 inch quads. I have had hawks attack planes in one case it was a 40 inch red and yellow carbon skinned flying wing running a big horse power inrunner setup with a 6x6x2 prop (140mph plane) and i was cruising along about 70 to 80mph and this red tail hawk nailed it from the front and feathers went everywhere. The plane started end over end rolling as wings do when they get threw out of Balance (he knocked the battery back so the CG way way aft) but the plane was recovered it was clear as day that he hit the front of the wing and went over the top and was hit by the prop. It was fatal for the bird and and fatal for the Carbon skinned wing that are NOT cheap, it was fixable but would have required a lot of work cutting out and laying now carbon cloth and all that good stuff so i just scrapped the wing. The motor, servos, esc, rx and battery all survived.

I have mentioned to the Emu devs. They know they need to streamline so as to benefit from BF development.

Too much junk to get a quad in the air. I like the idea of FlightOne's wizards, that's the direction we should be going in. Copying/pasting config's takes me back to the 1980's. We might as well all just start writing our own code and creating forks, seems to be thing to do. I code, but it's not worth the effort to keep going in this direction. Next we'll have to enter in VTX tables manually get our channel/power working... oh wait, we're already to that point too. Not liking where things are going at all, it's bad for newcomers to this hobby.

@@PrestonKnows FWIW, I just cycled through full setup on Betaflight 4.1 with RPM filters and FalcoX. Both fly AMAZINGLY. Both were actually somewhat trivial to setup - this was actually the easiest BF setup in a long time - but I'm very experienced with BF. (I did setup the wrong switch to arm on falco though and had to start from scratch....which only took a minute or two). Both fly so well it's just absurd. And from exploring all these firmwares, listening to pilots that champion each firmware i've learned a lot about new tweaks that make flying even more enjoyable - including stuff I learned from defaults and pilot that champion emuflight and after flying emuflight on a bunch of micros.

Stephen Gibb yup..the new 4.1 w/ rpm Filter is freaking amazing...looks and feels like a kiss quad. Just super on point. I almost gave up lol. I can always get it to fly well but couldn’t achieve the look of falcox or kiss. That’s not an issue now and I’m glad I stuck around

Joshua Bardwell yeah I didn’t mean anything in a bad way Joshua. The video of emu looked cleaner. I still am a Betaflight fan forever lol. I’ve got 4.1 looking and feeling like falcox and I’m happy thanks to you and a few others. I just know it’s hard to tell in flight, but u had more bf D bobble then u did on emuflight. Also I found if u go up on roll D in BF it completely gets rid of Betaflight bobble on throttle cuts and turns. Something about how the D isn’t equally applying to all axis in maneuvers. You should try it and do a video on it. I just posted my reason why in the BF group w/ a video showing how it’s looks. So now my roll D is more then my pitch which I though was weird but it looks amazingly steady!👍🏾

im using BF 4.0.6 as well on my BUZZ and i have the filters on and the tune is still insanely good, it feels like a Cadillac in the air by far the best tune so far for me since day one,now im curious how much better it would be if the filters are off and what makes it better by turning them off whats the pros.

I'd love to see this same test on some micros. On a 3 inch would have been great! My micros have been staying on 3.5.7

U know 4.0 is 3.5 plus new features right? Put 3.5 setting into 4.0 and it is the same thing.

It says on the emuflight page that the imuf filtering will help with the micros because betaflight rpm filter wasn't available to them and it was a lot to setup but that is changing now.

@@ugpfpv361 half a step ahead of you! Hahah. My thoughts exactly, can't wait! I had my 3" motors upside down like a tiny hawk just to experiment lol. (insignificant gains, motors unprotected/first to impact in a crash) After I flip em over I'll check that emu out 👍 Hopefully I can get to that today and let y'all know.

@@uavtech Thanks man. I have been meaning to do this with your custom presets on GitHub. Those are tuning godsends 🙏🙏🙏, special thanks for those. I was just worried about the dynamic notch filter. Can I get it working exactly like dyn notch 3.5.7 Wasn't this when they implemented 2 dyn notches in 4.0 vs 1 on 3.5? I didn't catch how to change the cli to get 3.5 dyn notch. I would rather just have everything the same because I got the filtering down very low on 3.5 and it flies great.

Maybe, but we act like all the variables / setting in any of the FWs are hard coded so feel can't be adjusted. They are not and it can be easily.

If only Emuflight works with Speedybee, then it will be a good to try. I had one hooked up to Speedybee the other day out in the field when I can't get my Emuflight quad up and running and it wasn't supported and I didn't have a laptop to check on the configuration. Maybe time will tell.

I do already. Emu it's superior with a little tunnig. The first time I try emu I was on 32k multishot that's really blow my mind then they change stuff and I move to dshot. It's good but was better before. Rpm.. I use it in 2 quad for 3 moths before use emu I get good results with more work but emu erase it.
