Apart from being a beautiful song from a truly amazing band, “En el muelle de San Blas” by Maná has had a very large impact on my life. I still remember what the booth looked like where I was sitting when I first heard it in a bar called Larry’s, during the first weekend of my study abroad program in Cuernavaca, Mexico, in 1998. Then in 1999, it was one of the first songs that I ever felt comfortable singing in public with one of my best friends. In 2003, this was the first song I sang in front of my wife Heather, while at the same time jamming with recording artists in Asunción, Paraguay. In 2004, I had the opportunity to perform at one of the most beautiful theaters in Quito, Ecuador, called la Casa de Cultura. Though I played almost entirely American rock and blues, this song in Spanish allowed me to connect much more with the crowd, which gave me much more confidence as a performer. 20 years later, I still love playing the song. I hope you like my humble attempt at a Latin Rock classic!
