Pre ignition is a spark plug timing related problem and not related to ignition of fuel inside cylinder early.Though it can be associated in combination to it.

This is one of the best animations and informative videos I've ever seen. Thank you! (Curious to find out what caused this noise when a couple of customers' vehicle broke down in our driveway at NAPA. Engine is seized up. No oil or coolant) but still knocked instead of slight tapping noise

Impressive video! You even animated the scavenger effect with the valve overlap! Looks like you went with the 8*btdc ignition to. Correctly animated the lean pocket on the top of the piston and appears you even left in some of the combustion gas from the previous cycle, very nice! Wish you would have thrown in some reversion, and that ring gap lol; also smack your builder for not offsetting the primary and intermediary ring.. Yea they move and rarely settle in the original offset, but it makes me sleep easier seeing it that way :-p Don't let any of my nitpicks deter you, this is by far the most accurate animation I have yet to see. Keep up this superior attention to detail!

The timing itself can cause this as well. Basically, its getting ignited before the spark plug ignites causing the compression stroke to be slammed on its way up before reaching TDC.

With knocking ,the initial ignition of the mixture is initiated by the spark plug. Caused by the combistion pressure and induced heat ,a spontaneous combustion of the mixture occurs. Asecond almost "parallel" combustion inside the cylinder is the result. When both flame fronts hit,intense high-frequency pressure waves are produced . These pressure waves create characteristic metalic "ping" sound,and cylinder pressure increases dramatically . Konocking combustion can lead to pre-ignition because of high combustion temperature

in case of detonation you basically have the combustion process accelerated because of the additional spots where fuel starts to burn so similarly to pre ignition the peak pressure is going to be before it was intended resulting in a higher peak. Preignition also makes a pinging sound without the wave fronts colliding. the wave front’s colliding theory seems hard to understand. basically the fronts travel at less than 1 m/s. and collision between them doesn’t seem relevant but collision between sound wave fronts might be. These travel at the speed of sound and bounce off the walls. the sound waves should have very low frequency. Doesn’t seem a problem anyway. Besides there are double spark plug engines, that wouldn’t be possible.

3.45 what is " correct tightening torque" ? is it how much we tighten the spark plug when we put back after cleaning the spark plug? ( which is something we can do easily.. tighten less rigidly ) or is it something that a mechanic has to do in the head of the cylinder ? this animation video is good...clear .

Awesome demonstration. One thing I’m unclear about, if ignition timing is too advanced, how does that create knock? Is it because spark plug fires too early before tdc and the heat as the piston is traveling up can ignite another spot at the same time?

Detonation (knocking) is caused by the sudden vaporization of atomized fuel in the combustion chamber, the volume ratio of which can be as much as 30,000/1. If the fuel is fully vaporized before entering the combustion chamber detonation does not occur, even when low octane fuel is used.
