Note : 2000 kanjis is the level same as almost of graduation junior high school (15 y.old) *equal to JLPT N1 class. We Japanese learn 2136 kanji until that time. *I wrote additional description about JLPT classes

nah this is fine these are completely different skills. My vocab is ~30k and that's including about 2700 unique kanji but speaking well is as much about vibe and pronunciation as it is about grammar...if you don't have an environment that demands output (and gives feedback...), it's not going to happen for a lot of people. If she has the energy a bilingual collab with someone like Irys could help a ton. Speaking broken accent heavy japanese where you can't express yourself is purely about confidence not ability and some people are too self conscious for this.

Hell fucking no, she has definitely studied. It's just that once you begin learning a language you realize how much you do not know. I know about 5k Japanese words and even now I'm like "damn, I'm absolute shit at Japanese" The whole "man I only know about (insert a great value)% of the language, I'm terrible" is extremely common for any language learner.

So she's probably of Korean or Chinese ancestry.I speak mandarain so Kanji's easy for me even though their meaning is often different in Jp but it's easy to make the new associations since the way it's written is already familiar. Grammar on the other hand is a whole other different animal. The particles and sentence structure is very different.

It's the same thing as teaching yourself a language simply by going through textbooks and language dictionaries. You'll theoretically be able to "speak" and understand the langauge, but if you're not ACTIVELY using it and practicing, your speaking proficiency will obviously be poor.
