Another outstanding video! I love learning new words and new terms so i absolutely love this video series. I think I've watched every one of your videos now so I'm sorry if I've missed it, but if you haven't done a video on the subject yet, i would love to hear you talk more about inviting the reader into the scene rather than just describing the scene. It seems inviting the reader in goes deeper than just "show not tell" or "using sensory language". How do you invite the reader in to your scene rather than just describing the scene? Congrats on passing 7k subs - according to social blade you should be hurtling past 10k subs in less than 90 days!

Thanks a bunch--for the good cheer and good suggestion! It's something I've talked about/around, but it would probably be good to address it head on. Now that I'm thinking of it, if you haven't seen the solitary video in the "Writing with Style" playlist, that might be a good one to watch in the meantime...and maybe the one about poetry being more than a pretty description. But, again, they approach the idea more than address it directly. And here's to 90 days from now!

Anemographia is of course distinct from anemography - the science of recording wind measurements and an anemograph, an obsolete scientific instrument that recorded windspeed on paper (now done digitally). I did not know that the word 'plinth' comes from the Ancient Greek for 'brick' - there is something rather bathetic about that particular etymology.

Yes, do it! Even if it's just for the fun of it: writing the examples for this video was a blast!

So cool! I would like to describe churches, emoticons and those rich markets fool of fish, fruts, Maybe a word to describe meals and the rich chinese cultura, or ART exposition and How be English mean. So much Fun! By the way you maybe like other Brazilian poet that was a English teacher in Oxford, Bruno Tolentino. 🎉🎉

Do it! And thanks for the suggestion--I've read a few Brazilian poets, but I don't know Tolentino. I'll check him out

This very thought had occurred to me while going through Lanham's Handlist (and it occurred to me at the examples of Enargia given): haven't they just arbitrarily made up examples of things to describe? Is there something of especial value in the description of water, wind, or the earth that I am missing? I struggled with Enargia but this video is, as usual, helpful.

😂 Great minds! Without doing deeper research, my best guess would be that they were common or significant elements of Classical discourse/poetry that ended up getting "canonized" in the handbooks. Maybe something to look into, though: it does feel pretty arbitrary

Narchographia was my favorite. 😄 Although craniagraphia does come close. Someone behind you on a shelf owes you a grudging thanks.

Really great video. It had me thinking about how I do (or don’t) use these in my writing and how I can utilize them.
