The theory is that Mirabel will be the one taking over for her grandmother and be the caretaker of the candle. After all the grandmother doesn't have any powers either more than taking care of the candle and guiding the family. And the theory is that Mirabel didn't get a gift at age of 5 is because she will get it after grandmother passes away and will take up the mantle. I like that theory. :)

I doubt it. Since I think in the end, if you noticed it theres no candle anymore. It's like the power became permanent. Her grandmother already knows about those cracks before mirabel did. She already knows that magic was disappearing a long time ago. And then the theory was, the grandmother asked for abuelo (deceased husband) to help their family and make their stronger, thats where mirabel comes in thats why she didny received any gifts because her gift was keepinh their family together and stronger without depending too much on their gifts unlike abuela(grandmother) that thinks that gift is everything, thats why she's outcasting mirabel, thats why her door was the whole house, her true gift was keeping their family together.

Something that always strikes me when Abuela comes in after Isabela's song is the LOOK on Isabela's face, the fear and dread in her eyes as she looks up at her grandmother and then down at herself, and the shame in her posture as she stands in the back with Luisa. It's at 25:55, and the way she flinches, the smile just DROPS, and it gets me every time. It's such a departure from the confident, poised 'princesa' that we're shown during the first half of the movie that it pushes home just how much of her is hidden behind her 'perfection'. It also always makes me want to protect her, because she literally is hugging herself, afraid of her own grandmother. Even as she leaves Mirabel's side she looks at her with such regret, like she's just...she's just not brave enough to stand there with her, and she's sorry.
@scr9069
@scr9069 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed-- and how quickly the flowers disappear after they stand up, and the way she looks down when Abuela says "Isabela is out of control!". God, I don't know how anyone can look at that and not feel their heart break for her. Luisa doesn't look much better in that moment, either.

The real villain was generational trauma all along! Yeah, the grandmother was placing too many expectations on her family, not out of maliciousness but because she needed to protect her family and her town. The miracle was keeping everyone safe, and it's not as if the threat was imagined or something. And I'm sure she had survivor's guilt and felt she HAD to be worthy of the miracle by living a life of service and perfection. But the pressure on her family made everyone crack. The pain underneath was breaking the family apart. The villain in Moana was also kind of trauma. Te Ka was actually Te Fiti, but hurt and robbed of her heart. Her pain made her lash out. The end with the big door implies now that the family relationships have mended, Mirabel is the next candle holder, she is the one on the front door, holding her family together.

I like how at the end of the film it's implied that the reason Mirabel didn't get a gift is because she's the next foundation or Matriarch of the family. Her Grandmother helped create the magic but now Mirabel is the next Keeper of the Magic by helping her family and creating stability in the house. Shes there to remind them their gift isn't who they are but apart of who they are and they shouldn't rely on it for everything.

Yes, the weight of expectations. Lusia even said it plainly "I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service." Isabella, always having to be perfect. Think of how much pressure our society puts onto attractive people. Poor Pepa, forced to ALWAYS be happy no matter what, because the slightest bit of any other mood turns the weather bad. Dolores with her super hearing, how much information must she constantly overhear that she must keep silent about and not allow it to affect her. It would be very hard to have any of these gifts. Made worse by Abuela always insisting that the family has a duty to serve the rest of the village. Abuela means well, she has the best of intentions, but she's putting the focus on the wrong thing. The miracle wasn't the candle, the Encanto, La Casita, or any of the gifts given to each family member, the miracle was the family itself. Poor Abuela, she lost everything in one night. Her home, her husband, her provider and protector. She was left completely alone with three newborn babies to care for. Her extreme grief and anguish is what caused the miracle of the Encanto and the candle and the house. But to Abuela, the family had been given these gifts solely to serve others. Never letting the others in the village serve them. It became a kind of toxic benign superiority. We are the Madrigal's! We serve others with our miracles, our magic. They do not serve us, for they have no gifts, no miracle, what could they possibly offer to the Madrigal's that we cannot provide for ourselves more easily and better?

I agree with most of what you said. The only thing I look at slightly differently is I think the encanto was caused by the grandpa sacrificing himself for his wife and kids. It is similar to Harry Potter's mom's sacrifice of her life protected Harry from Voldemort.. Abuela lost so much that as she said she held on too tight. and caused problems for the family instead of helping them be happy. Ironically the candle going out was the best thing that could have happened for them because they would have stayed stuck in their roles and been miserable.

@@jacquelinecallejas1390 AGREED!! I always thought that the miracle was fueled by the strong love the family has for each other. It came into being because Pedro loved his wife and kids so much to sacrifice his life for them. The miracle started dying because though the family loves each other, the pressure and expectations Abuela Alma placed on all of them held them back from being able to depend on each other and lighten each others' burden like a true loving family should be doing. It came back not solely because of Mirabel (though she's definitely the precursor of it in the same way Alma was when Pedro died), but because the family has seen how much their way of life has damaged them and decided to rebuild based on the foundation of communication and understanding. They learned to love each other unconditionally.

Mirabel and Camillo are 15 years old. Bruno left when Mirabel did not receive a gift when she was five years old. Mirabel and Camillo have little or no memory of their uncle. This is why a teen Camillo makes up playful "scary" stories about what he imagines Bruno is like.

I'm from Colombia and this movie represents very good my country! The clothes, animals, food, plants and casita's architecture are very accurate! The song is inspired in some colombian rhythms, and Abuela's story is a sad fact about Colombia's history: forced migration. For years, many colombians were forced to leave their villages because of violence in order to survive. Things are a little bit netter now, but we have so much things to do!

One of the things I love about this movie is how most of the powers correspond to roles within the dysfunctional family, e.g. the strong one, the golden child, the one who changes shape in order to please others, the one who knows everyone's business, the one who speaks uncomfortable truths and gets scapegoated, and so on. Just FYI, "antagonist" and "villain" aren't synonymous. There's no villain, but this movie does have an antagonist in Abuela. An antagonist is just someone who works at cross purposes to the protagonist, but they're not necessarily evil or even working from a place of malice.

This is pretty much what happens in Latin households. The toxicity of expectations and perfections within the family. One thing that a lot of us in the Latin community have mentioned on here, on TikTok, and other social media sites is that in real life abuela would NOT apologize. She would double down instead. The older folks tend to never learn and just be stuck in their old ways.
@wolfe6220
@wolfe6220 2 жыл бұрын
I think the REAL miracle of the movie is that an abuela apologized! 😆 I think you can see a lot of this in just about any first generation family in America, for example. You have the grandparents or parents who are pressuring the younger ones to either keep doing things the way that they have always been done (afraid of losing any of their culture) OR to pressure the kids to do everything they can to fit in with their new country (making them speak only English for example). I'm first generation Greek American & that's what happened to us: the only Greek words I know are either food items or are, uh, not polite to say in public. Either way, it's like being blind in one eye: you only see half the picture. You either lose what is "new" or you lose some of your culture. It's sad, there should be some middle ground.

29:38 A villain is a specific bad guy or woman who drives the core conflict of the story. An antagonist is just a character who stands in the way of the hero’s goals/the goals of the story but is not necessarily a “bad guy”. There is no true villain in this film, but there are plenty of antagonists. Characters like the grandma, Isabela, and even Mirabel’s mother (when she doesn’t believe her) all serve as antagonists with this in mind. A story does not necessarily need a villain, but it absolutely needs conflict in order to function. The most common way to create conflict is to have a main, central villain. But conflict can come from many places, whether that be environmental, personal, mental, emotional, etc. This story has conflict in spades. It just doesn’t use one specific person (villain) to drive it and instead uses generational trauma, family strife, and toxic perfectionism, which is why it feels fresh. It does absolutely have antagonists, though. More than usual for a Disney film, actually. That’s also why it feels like a more original story coming from Disney. Wanted to clear up the distinction between “antagonist” and “villain” for any new writers out there. :)

The great thing that many don’t notice is the way Casita responds/communicates with abuela and Mirabel the most, the two without any obvious gift but their gift is keeping the family together - the miracle falters when Abuela keeps pressuring the family and pushing Mirabel to the side. There’s so much to unpack between gifted individuals and those with no obvious gifts, everyone has something that they are good at but yeah that trailer for Encanto did not make me want to watch the film - I did relate very much to a few of the characters so I’m glad I did.

this movie is a textbook example of family dynamics where trauma becomes a generational issue and affects everybody in different ways. it's also typical about immigrant families from certain countries, and the pressures and expectations put on the following generations. family dynamics, trauma, mental health and how to deal with balancing all of these things in a big family where everybody seems to have their own variation of troubles and struggles... those are big themes for a disney movie to tackle, and I think a lot of people can see themselves or the dynamics of their families in this movie.

Can we just look at the fact that Luisa never actually got angry at Mirabel for "taking the magic away" she calls herself a loser because she's not strong and there for she can't help others like she has been doing her whole life so now she thinks she is useless and she was also the first one who was losing her power showing that she used it the most and now it's taking a toll on her also she never douted Mirabel when she said the magic is fading she was just to afraid to say that she knows and agrees with Mirabel and she is again thinks it makes her seem week. And that she doesn't cry because strong people aren't really known for crying or showing much emotion and the way she starts to tear up after Mirabel says "your more then just your gift" shows that she knew it deep down but was never told or given a chance to be herself because of all her "work"

A popular fan theory for why Mirabel didn’t get a power is because the house has “chosen” her to be the next head of the house after Abuela moves on. So the house prefers Mirabel to bond with the children of the house by remaining in the nursery until they move into their own rooms.

Notice Maribel wears butterflies like the candle and she like . Abuela are connected to Casita because the door placed magic inside Maribel. I love this movie so much. The theme that your foundation can't be built on fear. Even when it's understandable like Abuelo trying to make things perfect thinking that's what they needed to do to stay safe so nothing happened again like her husband being murdered in front of her eyes. And I do give her credit for not using their powers to be this ruling family that the village had to cater to. They worked with the town using their gifts to do what others couldn't. But the tight hold started failing and they needed another Abuela to be the new foundation which is why Maribel didn't have a power. She's The grandmother. It's like Elsa and Anna.

It seems that the Candle enhances that which the family member already has. Julieta was probably a natural caregiver as a child; Pepa's wild emotions was also "stormy"; Luisa was likely a sturdy child, while Isabella had a natural "green thumb". Antonio is an "animal guy". However, Miriabel is so naturally empathetic and supportive, she didn't NEED a magical boost.

The thing with Bruno’s powers is that he can *only* see omens. That is, the *only* futures he can perceive are warnings for events that are destined to happen. People tend to associate Bruno with the negative events so, “they don’t talk about Bruno”.

Something important to notice... It's that this is the reality of most latin american households... I broke in tears because I saw my whole family and our problems there. The things is that, unlike movies (Disney's specially), this doesn't get a happy ending for most of us :c

My daughter and me just watched this movie for the first time yesterday. She kept saying, "We don't talk about Bruno" the whole time lol XD Then whenever he showed up, she was like, "Oh no, mommy, it's Bruno!" She's 4 by the way, haha.

11:22 - They're called coatamoundi or coati for short. They are actually members of the 🦝 family. It's a good thing they're not near the coast, because Antonio is gonna have a hard enough time dealing with the 💀 s at the fangs and claws of his 🐆 friend. How horrible would it be for him if he caught the coatis enjoying the "delicacy" of sea turtle 🥚 s and baby sea turtles? 😱 F.Y.I. For those who live near Big Bear Lake, California, The Bear Alpine Zoo (formerly the Moonridge Zoo) has some. Along, with the only grizzley 🐻 bear family in captivity.

Oh shit! I didn't expect this but I love it! Edit: Lin-Manuel wrote Surface Pressure for his older sister. He talked about one Christmas where their parents woke her up early to put together his He-Man playset so he'd be able to play with it when he woke up so it's like a thank you/apology to her

This movie is one of the few things out of disney I enjoyed this past year. It had plenty of music that kids got caught on for months (kind of like a certain baby sea creature song). The movie was great for an older audience too because they can actually understand the lessons and philosophical ideals spread out through the movie. It was emotional and hit the feels through family which most kids movies are made for. That showed me how much the developers cared and new their audience. You guys are correct about disney and animals. I mean their mascot is a mouse so.... it makes sense. It does bug me a little how much the younger kids these days know all the disney princess movies but havent seen tarzan and some of the older disney movies. I know this because I work with young kids on a daily basis.
