Amazes me still that this movie full of talking animals delivers the 'discrimination bad' message better than most adult live-actions.
@Anino_Makata2 жыл бұрын
It's often in the execution. Adult live-actions are typically pretty aware of their more mature audience and tend to give out lessons like promo pamphlets at a salon: very flat-handed with subtext we have to figure out on our own. Movies like Zootopia that are geared towards kids have to instill that message into their younger audience to make a lasting impact without slapping it in their faces, so they make the story engaging and fun to follow and drop hints of the issues along the way with ways to fix them. The formula's worked for youngsters, and it evidently still works on adults too. We all have that one kids movie that's either always stuck with you as a kid or you found as an adult, but we love those movies regardless. And it matters a whole lot when those movies bear themes that are relevant today.

@@Hadrian9707 Except it doesn't when you consider the context of Nick's back story? He gave up trying to be anything else because he felt no matter what he did the world was still just going to treat him the same regardless (it's just a scene of Nick following that philosophy that doesn't inherently condoning it in context). It's the same argument about how the day is actually saved thanks to Judy profiling Nick based on species, so racism technically fixed the problem! Only that there was only a problem in the first place because of racism and someone trying to exploit that system because they had also been put down by the exact same system. There's no credit for fixing a problem you created, and much less if there were other net negatives in the meantime.

I disagree that Gideon's character development was unneeded. It presents a less black-and-white image of people and shows that people can change as they get older, and seeing his turnaround, with Gideon being her childhood bully around which her own implicit biases were based, showed her that she, in turn, could be better and not be defined by her worst mistake. And both Gideon's and Judy's apologies were pretty awesome. We don't see many GOOD apologies in media and as we start to see more, maybe people will start to learn what a good apology looks like and learn how to do it in a more compassionate and sincere way. Because for real... it's HARD to take ownership like that.

It's amazing how much can be said without saying. When Gideon delivers his apology, he is very clearly parroting his therapist (about "self-doubt" and "agression" and so on), before adding one bit from his heart ("I was a major jerk"). Which, I guess, resulted from some parent at school - maybe even Hoppses - contacting HIS parents about his bullying. Mr and Mrs Grey were probably horrified to find out their beloved Gideon is a bully, and got him some professional help.

I believe the story writers actually specifically said it was insects (since apparently in some places in the Zootopia world, there are non-mammal humanoid animals, particularly in the Bird, Lizard and Amphibian types, as well as most Zootopians having agreed apparently in the past that they wouldn't eat anything that could potentially gain intelligence on their level (which gives marine life the pass.)) So herbivores subsist on a variety of plants and plant foods, but most predators have agreed on only eating insects or products made from insects as to not sacrifice one of their neighbors on a daily basis, which leads to the weird question of how processed must predator food be, since there are so many plants and fruits in comparison to insects, so if a predator wants to eat something that tastes different, 90% of their food has got to be seriously processed versus Herbivores.
@friendist93232 жыл бұрын
@@greenpiersystem Well, consider how they said even the city of Zootopia itself is 10% predators and 90% prey. Now combine that with how many predators can easily subsist on an omnivore diet (and many even require it, like bears, badgers, foxes...)- so really, quantity shouldn't be a problem. As for taste, you can use many spices, fruits, vegetables and other plants to provide different flavors for a protein-rich meal! But yeah, lots of processing would come into play :p

According to the filmmakers, the carnivore citizens do not eat other mammals because the dietary supplements for them are fish, plant protein and insects, since fish and bugs are not sapient. The city also has a fast-food restaurant chain named Bug-Burga, which caters insect-based cuisine for this need. The information was stated confirmed by three of the filmmakers on their twitter. no it doesnt, because in this allegory predators = coloured folks or marginalized races, and they are shown as 'evolving' out of the need to hunt or eat meat, which means that at some point they were predators. Black folks and other minorities aren't predisposed, and never were a danger to other races, they never evolved into something better- they have always been human. This film, when you really try to follow that racism thing through just doesn't tracks and gets more messy and problematic when you try to view it through that lens.

One of the things I liked about this is that Gazelle who is Shakira says political things very much like she say in real life. Like the thing about living together and that despite the recent hysteria "This is NOT the Zootopia I know". She also walks the walk sine Gazelle is a Prey animal and her back up dancers are TIGERS. Predators are the MINORITY. I liked the parallel with race relations when Judy tells the tv audience that Predators are dangerous and then she sees that when a tiger gets on the subway the Prey mom brings her child closer to "protect" him when the tiger was just reading the paper. I've seen people react exactly that way when a Black guy gets on the subway. The Godfather wasn't a mouse. That is an Arctic Shrew . A good choice for a ruthless crime lord because in real life they have to eat their own weight in food daily and WILL resort to cannibalism if they have to . Let’s take a moment tho to recognize that Judy is a very corrupt cop. She starts off by blackmailing (not hustling, hustling is tricking someone into buying something) Nick saying that if he doesn’t help her she will turn him in and he will go to jail for tax evasion. She has Nick go into the car lot to search a vehicle without a warrant. Becomes the godmother of the mafia leaders granddaughter. Then uses that connection to get info out of the weasel under the threat of death if he doesn’t talk. She is a really REALLY bad cop.

I highly suggest to watch the cut scenes of this movie cause it used to be almost a totally different movie. Much darker, but Disney asked to tone it down. Nick was the protagonist and predators had to go around with electric shock collars. Also, it's probable we will have sequels, since apparently there were ideas to make this a trilogy and voice actors confirmed there were talks for them. And with the first movie's success and the series on the secondary characters coming it seems Disney is setting things to launch the sequels. I don't think they're necessary but they using the crime movies/series structure opens more chances of follow-ups and they have a good worldbuilding and engaging characters. They also could treat some very good topics (One the authors said they would address in case of a sequel is Judy and Nick's possible romantical relationship. Whether it would be possible or they'd stay friends. They also talked about exploring other species outside mammals)

If you liked the slots' scene, you should watch the french animated movie " Asterix's 12 tasks " (I don't know how to translate it) because there's a similar scene

They copied a lot of movies, the mole was from the godfather, the saving the bride was training day, and Walter and Jesse was breaking bad. There was many more as well.

The Disney+ series idea sounds pretty good. Disney did that for Monsters, Inc. by creating Monsters at Work which is pretty damn work.

I think Judy's parents "advice" was a comedy shock factor for the audience because we know that you don't say that to your child. Also the 10% predator and 90% prey in zootopia is like America which has different race of people and the biomes you see in the beginning of the moive when Judy is on the train to Zootopia and she sees the tundra biome and the jungle biome are the the countries that have only that race or in this case only have the animals that live in that environment. So only 10% of the predators moved from their biome/born environment to Zootopia

I guess we could consider those Jungle/Tundra Biomes as "PG-rated ghettos". So, polar and jungle animals mustn't get a better deal outside their own zones.

Yeah, I think the whole idea behind making them anthropomorphic animals was to present themes of racism and sexism in terms that kids can understand (notice a lot of the bunny stereotypes are Stereotypes about women. "You bunnies are so emotional." "A bunny can't be a cop" etc)
