I've been watching it off and on for DAYS! I'm start to cry anytime I hear any strains of 'Dos Oruguitas'! Funny little tidbit though: If you go back and watch Dolores' part in 'WDTAB', look behind her on the landing. Bruno is actually walking around in the background and Dolores knows it. She is constantly drawing Mirabel's attention and moving her. When the close-up comes at 'Do you understand?', look straight between them. Bruno is dancing in the space between them! LOL Also, Dolores literally says at the end of the song 'I hear him now'. She also can't talk to animals, so how would she know what the rats in the walls were saying? lol She always talks about him in the first person. She knew he had never left and just never said anything. It makes me so sad when I realize that Bruno never got to have kids. The triplets are probably closing in on being 50. He was probably amazing with his nieces before he cut himself off from the family.

@@spikeluv84 Apparently the creators have given more information about Bruno’s backstory. He was always introverted, but his mother expected him to use his gift for the villagers as soon as he learned how to control it. He developed the ritual we see him use with Mirabel in order to control it, which involves the querent being present. Because of them being there with him when they got their disappointing visions, as well as the intense pressure and disappointment from his mother, he had already grown distant from everyone before he disappeared, which is why Delores and Camilo don’t have happy memories of him. If you want, I can find the link to the video I got this from.

@@NarfiRef I've always figured the older ones (Isabella, Luisa, and Dolores) had more solid memories of him than the younger ones. Camilo and Mirabel are about the same age. If Bruno was there for Mirabel's night, but left afterwards, it's understandable that she wouldn't have that many memories of him. And can you imagine how hard it would be for Bruno to find a wife? Can he even see his own future? But yes, I would love the link. Thank you!

I've had thoughts about Pepa and we don't talk about Bruno today. I think Pepa is masking the grief of losing her brother with anger because it's easier for her to handle. I also think her side of the family has adopted the "don't talk about him" because its an emotional trigger for her, and her whole life revolves around managing her emotions, because if she doesn't it goes out over the others around her. When Bruno returns she's the first to hug him, so I don't think she actually disliked him, just the feelings his disappearance evoked in her.

One thing I only just noticed about this movie... in the beginning, when Abula was telling the story of how she lost her husband, her reaction is sad but more neutral. In the flashback, after the fall of everything, we see how she really felt in that moment. All the ugly and terrifying loss she felt. Even in the beginning, we see how Abula was trying to make everything perfect. We didn't linger too much on the loss, instead we moved forward, when in reality it took so much and a lot longer for her to move forward

"Encanto" provides the audience a series of targets as "the villain". First we think that Bruno is 'the bad guy", but we see how lonely he is and how much he cares about the family - and we, the audience, embrace him. Then we hate Isabella, the spoiled perfect princess, but then we get "What Else Can I do" and see Isabella's pain, and the audience likes her. And that makes us think that Abuela is "the bad guy" - because we haven't learned the lesson that there is no bad guy - and finally see how much loss that she suffered and why she is the way she is. Abuela doesn't hate or blame Bruno - she saw that her granddaughter didn't get a gift, learned that the magic was going to fade and the house collapse and then her son - her only son - disappeared - all in one day! And that shock brought back all the trauma of losing her husband. I think that when the Miracle candle guttered out, the magic didn't disappear - it went into Mirabel. Mirabel couldn't let the magic out until she realized that her family loved and accepted her, as she is. It wasn't until they told her that *she* was a gift, that the magic could be freed and allow the Casita and the rest of the family to have their magic, too.

I think that Mirabel is her Abuela's successor--neither of them have powers, but both were sources of the miracle. Abuela's miracle was wrought by grief, pain, tragedy and sacrifice; but she lost sight of what really mattered once she started seeing & judging her family solely on their gifts, rather than as people. Mirabel suffered as well, but the source of her miracle came from her reaching out to her family & truly understanding them as humans who felt restricted by their gifts. She also finds a new level of understanding & compassion with Abuela, too, and thus bridges the disconnect (or "cracks") that had been building within the family. The house was rebuilt--as a family & community--with stronger foundations based on love & understanding, rather than magic, which was made possible by Mirabel. So she's the new Abuela, and both of Bruno's visions came true! I feel like Isabella resented Mirabel for being giftless--with those gifts come extra expectations & burdens, right? She probably assumed Mirabel had more freedom & felt less pressure, so she's actually secretly jealous. The vision of Mirabel hugging her sister was another clue that she had to truly reach out & discover what was important, thus fixing the breach (another set of "cracks") that had kept them at odds. Anyway, I absolutely love your reaction, and I'm glad I stumbled upon it! Subbed

This is a very popular theory, and I agree wholeheartedly. Last night I noticed that Abuela says that she asked Pedro for help and he sent her Mirabel, which seems to me like she sees it that way too. I really think Encanto deserves both a Disney+ show that can give us a slice-of-life view of the Madrigals as they learn to be more open and accepting of each other’s vulnerabilities, but also a sequel movie set 10-20 years later when Abuela passes and the family learns how to mourn and adapt to a new family dynamic with her gone.

Actually, at 32:10, Bruno wasn’t telling the future on Pepa’s wedding day. He stated, “That wasn’t a prophecy, I could just see you were sweating.” All Bruno wanted to do was let Pepa be emotional because he didn’t want her bottling up her emotions. “Let it in, let it out, let it rain, let it snow, let it go.” It’s pretty self-explanatory, but I can tell how some people might miss it. Also, when Dolores was talking about the rats in the walls at 12:20 she was referencing the rats that were with Bruno, proving that she knew all along that Bruno was living in the walls and never told a soul.

There is a quick line by Pepa's husband in that song. When Pepa sings, "Bruno says it looks like rain, and in doing so he floods my brain", Felix's line is "Abuela gets the umbrella", that is a, subtle, indication of how little confidence Abuela had in Pepa. She knew that she wouldn't be able to keep control of her stress, so pulled out the umbrella in front of them, showing that she lacked faith in her control. Also. My, personal, take on Bruno's powers. I think there is a grain of truth in the thought that he makes bad things happen. Just hear me out. His, whole, motif is sand. Specifically, the sands of time in an hourglass. When he has a vision, he pours out a circle of sand, and lights a fire in several small piles. Then when he starts, the sands rise up in a great swirling dome. The sands are constantly shifting and changing pattern and form. But the moment his vision coalesces, the sands crystalize into a pane of glass, which contains the vision. It becomes immutable and fixed. Almost literally written in stone. I think that, when he has a vision, whatever he sees becomes locked and unchangeable. They even say, in the song, "Your fate is sealed, when your prophesy is read." There are numerous, literary, examples of that phenomenon.

My theory is that the miracle was weakening because of their family bonds. They recieved the miracle because abuelo Pedro sacrificed himself to protect his family, so the miracle reflected the state of their family relationships which meant family members being hurt or not getting along meant damage to the magic. That's also why the cracks appeared especially when Mirabel was not feeling well or was being hurt by her family's words because she was the most obvious one hurting and her hugging her older sister Isabella made the cracks disappear, because she was mending her relationship so the cracks do not only represent the danger the magic is facing, but its also a kind of metaphor for the now visible cracks between the family members.

I really love your reaction and I am glad you also turned around on Abuela as we hear her pov. I was also so frustrated with Abuela but then seeing her story, I get it so much. My grandparents and parents hide the pain they experienced during the 1960s genocide in Indonesia (casualties counts are unknown because it was such an open secret, estimates vary from 500k to 2 millions) and sometimes it made them difficult to deal with and i just get Mirabel. So many are wishing Abuela to be punished (i saw on Reddit someone wishes someone pushed her down the stairs, jeez) or imagining the worst of motivations of Abuela ("she was not apologizing, just being manipulative so that she can hold on to power) and I am just stunned on how completely they missed the message of the movie (that we don't know what's going on with the other person, they might also be suffering too and that the way to heal and repair the relationship is to forgive). edit to add PS: no one "got rid of Bruno". as far as the family knows, Mirabel didn't get a gift, Alma asked Bruno to see what was happening, and then the next day Bruno disappeared. They thought he left them in their time of need, which is why Abuela thought Bruno didn't care about the family. This also explains why Abuela said "Bruno left because of you"

Donkeycorns!!! You weren't too harsh on Abuela. Sometimes hard truths need to be said to break unhealthy behavior patterns. We know Abuela was coming from a place of trauma, but her response to that trauma was toxic to the family. She valued her family for their Gifts and/or what they could do to uphold the perfect family image she wanted to portray, no longer seeing any of them as individuals. She castigated or cast aside those that did not fit her Madrigal mold. Her fears had affected and infected her to the point that her love was no longer unconditional. That was why the Miracle was dying. It took Mirabel to make Abuela see how toxic things had become and to get Abuela to see her family in their entirety.

The scene where Mirabel goes on the journey to Bruno's tower was telling. Antonio seemed worried about his cousin not getting a door/gift and appears to send the toucan to accompany her. Joshua: Crap, they're going to make me feel bad for bagging on the old lady, huh? Exactly, that's the whole point. The Abuela isn't a bad person, but like any person, she lost sight of what was truly important. She said things that were hurtful. That is something anyone can do. She hurt people, not because she intended to, but because she is imperfect and she lost perspective on how her actions were affecting her family. That happens a lot in families. No one is perfect and no one sees your imperfections first-hand like your family does. But once Abuela realized what she did, she apologized and let Mirabel in instead of getting defensive and putting up more walls. Then Mirabel responded with love, forgiveness, and understanding. That's what saved the family. Those same things have the power to save a lot of real world families too.
@ChachiSays2 жыл бұрын
I agree. Mirabel represented everything Abuela had lost sight of and she didn't realize that until the house fell apart all around them. 👍
@VampireHunter57902 жыл бұрын
The look on Isabela's face AS he is proposing is just PURE terror. Also to be fair to Mirabel, they had to Break the house/ family before they could fix it. Abuela had to hear the harsh truth before she would look at herself.

Watching the movie over with captions I love the lines that abuela says, she said "Clean your rooms, I don't care how big they are." It made me crack up. Also during the end of the we don't talk about Bruno song you can see Luísa doing a sad dance. Personally I think Mirabel is going to be the new abuela in the new generations. Which is why she didn't get her powers.

Thanks for your reaction. I hope this doesn’t come off ignorant of me or anything, but watching Latine reactions to this movie have been so enjoyable for me. I love watching reactions for people who connect so well with the content, and it’s nice when the reactors understand the minor Spanish that gets inserted (like even just knowing what Tio/Tia means and how the family makeup works). I watched this movie with my friend and I got really emotional during many scenes, especially towards the end and my friend judged me for crying during a, as she called it, "kids movie", which honestly really hit me since I am also quite sensitive. This movie means a lot to me as I can relate a lot to the characters and songs and it makes me happy to see others getting emotional about it as well. So, as silly as it might sound, thank you for being openly emotional and not being afraid to shed tears. Crying is something that shouldn't be shamed. That's also something I really love about Luisa's character as she is strong while also being sensitive, which is something that isn't represented often.

A few points that not many people notice. First, the reference to 'Mission: Impossible' when Mirabel tells Antonio that his present is going to self-destruct if he doesn't take it. Also the reference to 'Doctor Who' when the little girl screams 'it's bigger on the inside?!!!' when she sees Antonio's new room. I'm dating myself here, but the part of 'Surface Pressure' when Luisa is juggling the house with her feet reminds me of the Ed Sullivan Show back in the 1950s/60s. He would regularly book circus performers (usually women) who would do that sort of thing with specially-made barrels and/or boxes. I love how, during Dolores' first section in 'We Don't Talk about Bruno', the sound engineers brought forward sounds that are normally in the background, such has her footsteps when she's dancing. That, combined with her quiet singing voice, lets us experience the world through her gift. (There's also the fact that Bruno can be seen on the balcony behind her and Mirabel.) The family's reaction to Bruno is classic misdirection. When you get right down to it, it's Dolores who explains exactly what happened with Bruno, in her line: Always left Abuela and the family fumbling, grappling with visions that they didn't understand. However, we miss that point due to the infectious nature of Lin-Manuel Miranda's awesome music. A final delightful touch is that the leopard in the final family picture is slightly blurry, as moving objects usually are in still pictures. The attention to detail, as always, is wonderful. Thanks for a lovely review. By the way, are you interested in older films? If so, i would highly recommend the 1946 movie 'A Matter of Life and Death', aka 'Stairway to Heaven', starring David Niven and Kim Hunter (before the original 'Planet of the Apes'). It's a heart-warming story inspired by a true incident, with an unexpected ending.

Thanks for sharing this! You're right, I was so enamored by Lin-Manuel's music that I missed a lot of the detail in his lyrics. And yes, I'm absolutely open to watching older films and I will look into those! Thank you the recommendations! 🙂

That's not actually Bruno in the background, it's Camillo shape shifted into him. If you look closly, you can see a green glow coming from his eyes--we see later that than Bruno eyes only do this when he's having a vision. Camillo was just getting ready for his part in the song up there lol

Ok, so as a latina I really felt represented on this film because: 1. So many families have a matriarcal hierarchy. This is because a lot of our countries have had guerrillas, civil wars and dictatorships and most of killed people were men leaving woman in charge of the families. Also, we still maintain a "machista" society where men leave their families and woman are the pilar of the family system. 2. Latinos are very religious (not me), but I have family in Colombia and they are. I also think in Colombia there is a particular veneration of the Virgin (another matriarch) And we are also supersticious. There's a rich combination between catholic beliefs and ancestor's practics as shamanism (wich I think Julieta -the healer- and Bruno -the fortune teller- are) 3. You go ask every latino and there ALWAYS a family member nobody wants to talk about XD 4. We are very gossipy LOL 5. There is a strong sense of community. I think that is because all of Latinamerican countries suffer a lot of natural disasters and everytime something happens we come together and rebuild from zero (I'm in Chile. Every now and then we have earthquakes. The first thing people do is organize help for the needed) 6. We very diverse in etchnicities because we are mixed with our ancesters and also afrodescendents and white people. (Sorry if I'm not using the most sensitives words for this topic, my vocabulary is very limited on English) 7. We do make a party out of every event LOL (any time is good for some food, drinks and dance) 8. We don't leave the nest if it not necessary. As you can see Madrigal's live together, as soooo many families in Latinoamerica. There are a lot of reasons for this, but I think we are very co dependent of the family dynamics.
@ChachiSays2 жыл бұрын
LOL Ana, I can relate to so much of what you wrote. This is probably why I convinced myself Mirabel was over 20 years old. It wasn't at all unusual to me that they were all still living in the same house. 😂 And thank you for sharing that, btw! 🙂

Re: 8, A couple of things I’ve always wondered about these extended-family household setups are 1) what happens when they run out of room? Do they just keep building more additions to the house? 2) Are there cultural expectations about which family a married couple lives with? If not, does this create tension if a couple chooses one side over the other? And 3), does it ever get to the point when the oldest generation in the household are no more closely related than cousins, or do people generally move out before that point? Sorry if you’re not able to answer these; it’s just something I’ve been curious about.
@anaestay66982 жыл бұрын
@@NarfiRef Well, as I said before, there is not just one reason we may not leave the family house. One of them is because southamerica is not cheap to live in and the salaries are very low, so there is a lot of people that simply can't afford to leave. 1. Poorest people share rooms and that is a very sad problem, because sometimes they even share beds. Other family can afford little expansions (rustical in materials) or they create separations in between larger rooms. 2. No expectation about wich family is recieveng the new couples, they just go where there is room for them if they can't afford to get a home for themselves. Everything create tension (XD) 3. I didn't really understood that question, sorry :P

You should definitely watch Moana or Coco- you'll definitely cry on those too. So I've watched tons of reaction videos and one thing I've noticed is almost everyone saying 'Oh, then she was supposed to hug Abuela- except if you look closely when the vision is first forming there are flowy frills on the dress in the vision. Abuela didn't have the flowy frills. I think Mirabel needed to hug Isabella because she couldn't fix her relationship with Abuela until her relationship was fixed with Isabella, which means she HAD to hug her in order to actually help her family. Also, technically Abuela was right when she said that Bruno left because of Mirabel, because he did. Now, he left to protect her, but technically it was because of her. I also think that Abuela did blame her subconsciously because Bruno disappeared after Mirabel didn't get her gift. Not saying that is Mirabel's fault, but I think that was how Abuela saw it.
@ChachiSays2 жыл бұрын
You're right, that's how she saw it. I was just upset because it wasn't fair to blame Mirabel for something that was out of her control.

Some fun things about the movie and Colombia, of course there are references to the culture throught the movie but here are some you can check out to go deeper: The tall palm trees in the background and the tallest in the world and are found in Colombia in a place called Valle del Cocora (go check out real pictures, its amazing) Also the river where they get miracle exists as well. There is a type of plant that grows in it that makes is look like a colored river. Its called Caño Cristales (go see it as well). In the Family Madrigal video, there is a part where she jumps through what looks like cracker jacks. That is a game called Tejo, similar to cornhole, but with a metalic puck that is thrown on a clay base with gun poweder packs. So much fun. Also, when Mirabel's father is talking to her about not telling anyone about the vision and they say time for dinner, he says "miercoles", its sort of a PG of says S H I T. In spanish it translated to MIERda, but we say MIERcoles to make it PG. In the movie you will see different dishes from different regions, like buñuelos, arepa con queso (there is a never ending fight with the Venezuelans about where the arepa was invented, but what ever) and at the dinner with the Guzman's they served Ajiaco. The clothes in the movie are actually a mix of typical clothing from lots of regions of the country, so its a little wierd as there are some for hot weather climates and others for cold weather. The country has three mountain ranges crossing the country so, all though we dont have seasons, there are all kind of climates in the different regions. On the sad side, the move references the civil war in Colombia known as the 1000 day war from 1899 to 1902. A very long and brutal war that devastated so many families. It alsp resulted in the loss of Panamá (yes people, Panamá was once part of Colombia) Hope this helps in your Encanto journey.😊🤎

Abuela Alma cannot help the way she is. Ever since she and Pedro led the people from their village, they have kind of been her responsibility. She was a very young widow with three babies to raise, but she is also the de facto leader of this town. A higher power granted her a miraculous gift in return for the fact Pedro sacrificed himself. That power created the encanto, a sanctuary for everyone, and Alma made a solemn vow to help the people of the town, to "earn" the miracle that was given to them, never realizing that they had already earned it with Pedro's life. But her good intention morphed into this HUGE responsibility, and she is living her life in fear that if the magic goes away, they will all be vulnerable to the outside violence again. When Mirabel didn't get her door and then Bruno disappeared immediately afterward, her faith was shaken and she is holding on tighter than ever.

I think this movie does this to everyone, i think one of the morals the story tries to portray is not to judge someone so fast. it perfectly sets you up to hate certain characters like Isabella and then you find out more about them and it just makes you feel horrible for judging them. With Abuela not only was she a single mother but she also was looked upon for support by the whole village, especially since the family had powers, at the time the powers were needed to keep them safe, they are isolated so they have no way of knowing if the danger is gone, and with the history of Colombia that is safe to say that the danger probably wasn't fully gone. There have been decades of displacement and violence effecting the citizens of Colombia
