@@GerardoTonella as someone who has OCD, ABSOLUTELY correct. He even has some of the same compulsions as me. @@bluemariomedia8351 Hi! OCD sufferer here, OCD is an anxiety disorder so Bruno feeling anxiety is ofc natural, however what is making ppl think OCD is that because REAL OCD (not the stereotype ableist media pushes) is extreme anxiety because of intrusive upsetting thoughts (usually about yourself or your loved ones and their safety) that results in mental and physical behavoirs meant to alleviate the anxiety, it often causes immense self guilt in sufferers as their brain makes them responsible for their and others safety. Bruno has this to a T. He is HIGHLY anxious, does everything to protect his family as he feels responsible for their safety, constantly does repetitive actions (crossing fingers, throwing sand/salt, tapping, hitting himself, isolating himself, all VERY common OCD compulsions) to alleviate the pressure and CLEARLY feels extreme guilt.

Being from Colombia, I can tell you that the scene you are referring to in terms of immigration is in fact a comment on an internal problem in Colombia called forced displacement "desplazamiento forzado", it is when entire communities are forced to abandon their homes in the countryside due to violence and armed groups.

My interpretation at least was that she didn't get a room, because the house is her "room" hence why she is front and center when the door redecorates when she puts the door knob in. Essentially, I agree she is the next matriarch of the family. Also, all the door knobs have the first initial of the room's owner, so it makes the main door has an "M", both for Mirabel and Madrigal.

Interesting theory. Also her name rhymes well with Mirabel "miracle" Madrigal "magical". It's not coincidence! For me, it's the prophesy that took itself first step the moment she touches the doorknob and then it disappears, the magic begins to fade, she'll destroy the weak foundation and rebuild it with stronger foundation.

I don't think Abuela saw Mirabel as her replacement. I believe she was so focus in preserving the candle that when Mirabel didn't get chosen for a power she took it as a way of her threating the possibility of them losing that miracle candle. It wasn't until the very end when Mirabel called her out on it when Abuela realized how her obsession to preserve the candle was tearing her family apart because of the expectations she placed on them. The candle started to fade out because she was going against the reason the magic candle was given to her which was protecting and keeping the family together. The scene where she acknowledges the pain she has caused by forcing everyone into the image that she envisioned them was touching in itself. Beautiful film that depicts real family dynamics.

I agree. I think Abuela was so protective of the miracle they were given that she ended up seeing her family almost as a commodity and then valued them based on the value they brought to the expectations she had set. Their transparent abilities they had became more important than the intangibles that existed within them. She forgot that it was her own intangibles that created the protection they needed to survive in the first place. To go from nothing and have the tragedy that she had to then have the tangible gifts that were provided to her and her family it is very easy to become superficial and forget about the intangible gifts that every person. Anytime you create a plan for other people it is almost inevitable that you will see that person as a resource and not a soul. Especially if that plan benefits yourself at the same time

Bruno's vision showed that Mirabel set the things in motion for the house to collapse because of the rejection that Abuela gave her after not getting a door. The vision also showed him that Mirabel will be the one to bring the magic back and fix everything. That's why the shard glass showed both.

I agree with your interpretation of Mirabel becoming the new “Abuela”. Tho I do not remember there being a new candle at the end. The community rebuilding the house and appreciating Mirabel for who she actually is and them providing her a doorknob brought the casita back to life. New foundation. New purpose. No need for “miracle” because loving your family is the miracle in and of itself.

One of my favorite things about that sacrifice and where the magic comes from is that it’s a nod to one of Colombia’s biggest celebrations, and that’s little candles day. On December 7th we open the holiday season by lightening candles everywhere, and the grandparents met on a little candles day (you can see them carrying the candles during the flashback). My family (as I’m sure every Colombian family does) comes together every December 7th simply to light candles. So for that sacrifice to turn into a magic candle that represents family union… it just blew my mind… The level of research behind this story is incredible.

I think the amazing part of this movie is that for us Colombians the immigration aspect as you call has such a deeper more nuance meaning because of the terrible armed conflict that the country has endured for years and that has forced a lot of people from the country side out of their homes. But it perfectly fits into any immigration story, it’s universal. It was beautiful.

Mirabel’s gift was to change to Foundations of the house and the family. Abuela pushed her family to try to live up to the memory of Abuelo Pedro’s sacrifice, which Casita realised was becoming increasingly toxic for the family. Look at the entire layout of the House, the Candle (a literal reminder of the sacrifice) is at a focal point as this distant and lofty ideal for them all to aspire to and physically look up to all day. Mirabel changes the Foundation to the Front Door, an invitation for the family and the entire town to come inside and open up to each other. Almost every member of the family was closing themselves off out of a feeling of duty, Mirabel gave them a door to open themselves up to others. I have this other theory that the ‘spirit’ of Casita is Abuelo Pedro but there’s not a lot of evidence…

Everything: the costumes, traditions, anthropological races, music, gastronomy… the River they showed even it’s real; it’s called Caño Cristales and it’s the most precious river, because of its five colors! I thought Mirabel's purpose was pretty clear as it was literally said in the end. They thought the miracles was their gift but the real miracle was just being born to a loving family. But the family forgot about that so they had Mirabel to remind them what the true miracle is. Their love was the thing that kept the housr together and they were loosing that. While also having her as the next candle holder.

The real conflict of the movie es a generational conflict: Abuela representing the traditions and Mirabel representing a will for change. This is a very real problem a lot of families, specially latinx families are going through. If you think about the Madrigal family as a representation of immigrants, think about Abuela as those first relatives who have to leave their countries and homes trying to give their families a better chance but that often comes with great sacrifice, so for that generation preserving everything is key to keep everyone safe. But now we have second or third generations, the grandchildren who are growing with new ideas and ways of understanding family and the world. This new vision feels like a threat for older generations who are not comfortable with change and will usually clash with their younger relatives. The older generation afraid that change might put at risk what they worked so hard to build and failing to realize that generational trauma so often gets passed on within families at a great cost. So yes, Mirabel is the new generation that motivates her family to face those issues they have kept in silence for so long, proving to them that actually talking about them instead of facing away will only make the family (and community) stronger.

@robin.feather
@robin.feather 2 жыл бұрын
It would have been interesting, but it would also completely miss the whole point of the movie. It wasn't any magic or supernatural thing that destroyed the house. It was simply just how the family bonds were breaking apart, and in the center of it was Abuela who focused more on keeping the family useful and perfect with their gifts (along with being scared of losing her home and family again) and failed to focus on her family's own self worth without the gifts. And it would also completely change Bruno as a character. The big point with him is that he is shunned by his family because of his gift, but loves them regardless. Even to the point where he had to leave to keep Mirabel safe from being a complete outcast herself, but he couldn't bring himself to completely leave his family. Resorting to live in the walls, fixing the cracks, and even placing his dinner table right with the family's dinner table. He even drew his own plate with his name on the table just to still have some connection with his family and some kind of sense of belonging. The point is that he loved his family more than anything. To have him being the cause of the house breaking along with the magic couldn't have been a reality without changing his whole character. A possibility with this idea could be that he grew to resent his family and the magic that caused him to be an outcast in the first place. Resorting to destroy what his family holds dear along with the magic that caused him great pain. It would be an 180 on his personality, but that's the only way I could see it happen. (also I'm quite tired of seeing the trope of twist villains so I'm really glad they kept him as a well meaning person. For me, it wouldn't be worth to change Bruno and the course of the movie just for shock value)

I could totally see this replacing what used to be the Rainforest Café in Downtown Disney. It would be a part of the resort, but not in the park. The building is already close to what the house is and is 3 stories tall.

Mirabel did get her own room in the end, remember? It was the door to the entire house. Confirming your theory that she taking over (eventually) as the abuela of the new generation. The head of the home.

Mirabel doesn’t get her own room bc her door dissolved… everyone else’s room was magically created when their door got opened so the house just never made her one.

I always come back to the scene that Mirabel sees the cracks in the wall during Antonio's party. She and abuela were the only ones that could see the house cracking. She also seemed to have premonitions or, maybe, she was in tune with her families feelings.

××SPOILER×× I think the abuela Alma died when the candle was put out at the end leaving Mirabel as the leader of Casa Madrigal. Alma means "Soul" in Spanish. The movie has magical realism, in magic realism dead people can be seen or heard by alive people.

As a Colombian i couldn't help but cry almost all the way through this movie. The amount of details in this is astonishing, the Ajiaco, the buñuelos, our musical rhythms fused in every song, the emeralds. The yellow butterfly showing the way... I can't 💛💙❤️ the food thing is a very Colombian reference grace, your mom's cooking will make you feel better no matter what

Instead of the house building a room and gift for Mirabel and giving her a door, the house gave its whole self to her. She took on the gift of caring for the family, as Casita does. You can see little hints of how in sync her and the house are. As she falls apart with the family, so does the house. Then love and support builds them both up. In the end, she gets a door suitable for her gift that shelters the family she sees and supports.

Hey Grace! Huge fan of yours. I gotta say, I watched Encanto twice and the first time, it just didn't quite click for me. I thought the music was ok and the message, while good, was convoluted, and I thought some of the characters were underdeveloped. However, watching it a second time REALLY boosted my appreciation for the movie. I wouldn't say I love it, but it's really good! I picked up more on the emotional nuances and how well told the story is also through the songs. I definitely like the songs more this time than the first time. Sometimes, I just need a few listens :) I do still wish there was some more moments between Bruno and the family that made us believe that he loved them, like a simple flashback to good times he had with them. That would have added more understanding to WHY he loved them so much, aside from just being in the family, to stay. But, I do understand that this is a different cultural context and family is everything in many latin cultures, so that way, it makes a ton of sense. Anyways, I'm glad I watched it again, it's really good!

To enlighten on your topic on Mirabel becoming abuelas replacement. I noticed quite a bit of attraction between the house and who own it. The house(casita) was built to protect abuela. This assumes that abuela should have all access and she does. But do doe’s Mirabel. They never really show us any of the other characters using the house the way these two did. So it makes a lot of sense

Yes, Dolores could hear bruno that he is in the walls and maybe hear some of his premonitions, but she also knows that people misinterpret his propechies. She didn't say a thing about bruno because of Abuela and as a show to respect his uncle's decision.

The only thing I missed was a conversation between Mirabel and her mother (could be a flashback) about how it took her some time to discover her gift as well. Just think: Everyone receives the gifts as a child, imagine how long it took her to discover that it's in food... and that it heals people. I was looking forward to this flashback.

8:48 Maybe the reason she had trouble keeping secrets is because she clearly knew Bruno was living in the walls (there's no way she wouldn't have been able to hear him) and keeping that secret made all the others seem less important.

I really loved this film and its somewhat twist on the true "villain" of the film. Like when Mirabel saw Isabel as the solution to the houses crumbling, I was sceptical, but then they had that really touching song together and by opening up with each other healed the house somewhat, only for Abuela to damage it. You could feel Abuelas influence over the family the whole film, but it was at that point where I felt her being a detriment to the families magic. The morale of the story is a happy family make a happy home.

So eloquently said Grace. The Latino experience can put a lot of pressure of not letting family down just because of the hardships endured by out prior ancestors and we carry their struggles with us so every step we take we struggle with to do because our choices don’t just effect us but our close connected family too.

Hello Grace I think you observations were pretty good. It's not so much, though, that the "road to hell...", but the "don't let the perfect be the enemy of good". Abuela was saved by a miracle. What was saved was what has real value- life itself. Abuela unfortunately began to see value only in the gifts being handed out by the candle and the utility of those gifts to the community. My parents were immigrants and in a family of nurses, engineers, and accountants, a high school education (or an artistic aspiration) was seen as a let down, and that's how I understand that dynamic as well. Anyway, one last thing: every time they called the house "casita" I wanted to scream "It's a damn mansion!". Which makes you think about Abuela's origin. Maybe it's about the history of Colombia, but you can also see Cuba there as well, and while Castro was terrible, there was a reason why the "People" (really the poor) followed him.
