When I was a kid I assumed Morgan’s mom died tragically as other moms from Disney movies, and even if I watched countless times, only now I realised she simply left… and I think it was a great choice, some love stories simply ends, without goodbyes, reason or heroic deaths…

Yeah that's the sad thing. He doesn't believe in love because he loved Morgan's mum and I'm guessing he did alot and she simply left and broke his heart. So he basically is trying to not love again so he'll be hurt. If she died then he would still feel love and probably move on, since she left him it's more impactful because now he has trust issues and doesn't believe in fairytales.

Re-watching this, I never initially realized how unique it was for a Disney movie to address divorce like that. When relationships end, they typically go the route of a parent dying or the cliche "parents falling back in love again." Patrick Dempsey plays so well off Amy Adams discussing the nature of relationships throughout the movie even before it becomes obvious the characters are going to fall for each other.

Robert: I just want her to strong, you know? To be able to face the world for what it is. That's why I don't encourage the fairy tales. I don't want to set her up to believe in this "dreams come true" nonsense. To me, that's actually a TERRIBLE job of parenting. Robert is only making Morgan's life worse when it's already bad enough. He believes it's time for her to start facing reality when clearly she's still too young for that. She's only six years old and if you ask me, I believe the right age for children to start growing up and facing reality would be around age 12 to 13. Not only that, but Robert doesn't understand the true importance of fairy tales. He's not wrong with what he said before, reality is not the same as fantasy and it never will be. But, fairy tales actually stories that are MEANT to be told TO CHILDREN. They are particularly used as a comfort to children to get away from and/or deal with all of the pressures from modern life. To this day, I still believe it's a good tactic. I sometimes think that if Robert had never met Giselle in the first place, if he ended up marrying Nancy, and if he still continued to raise Morgan without encouraging the fairy tales, the rest of Morgan's childhood would've remained very very sad. With that being said, I think it's actually a relief that Robert met Giselle because before that, he was nothing but a horrible father before he fell in love with her. I know it sounds like I'm being brutal, but the reason why I'm saying all of this is because I'm both effected and influenced by this scene. I'm now determined about what type of parent I want to be when I have my own children. When I say that, I don't just mean I want to be a better version of Robert, I also mean I want to be a better version of both of my own parents. I want so badly to be very much like the parent that I never had. That might sound wrong to you, but you should at least understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

For once, I actually agree with someone like you, I mean what you said about Robert making Morgan's childhood terrible without fairytales encouraging and all that stuff and just letting her try to face things when she's not old enough for things like that in life, I agree with you, and yeah it would have made Morgan's childhood very sad if Robert hadn't met Giselle, and when Robert said that he wanted Morgan to be strong and everything, I mean any other adult beside him would agree, that is if you were smart enough to know and understand things, but like I said, I agree and yeah you know the rest of what I just said to you, and since I'm 18 years old, in high school, and understand how some things are to people, especially in the movies and TV shows I've watched which relates to real life, I understand your meaning.
