It’s almost unbelievable how sensitive and accepting this cartoon *from 1947* is not just towards blind people but towards women, girls, Irish, Italians, and even single moms. It’s beautiful.

There's a lot more of that in these older movies and from that decade than you might think. While that period of time was far from perfect and was filled with a lot of racism, sexism, and a lot of other craziness, there were a lot of good people as well. You can even see it in Twelve Angry Men when one of the jurors went off on a rant about 'them' (which I think was supposed to be Hispanic people) and the others just stopped listening to him because they thought he was being an idiot.

I remember skipping when I was younger because it was too sad for me. This is probably the reason why I love raggedy Ann so much now. They depict the way blind people visualize and hear in such a beautiful and unique light, instead of showing it only as a problem. This was very ahead of its time to be this accepting.
@Leamichellefan2244

Do you know what sad is they don’t do that anymore. I should know because I’m blind and I’ve never seen a cartoon or movie that depicts people like me the way that this does which is why I still love it to this day and don’t even get me started on the song that raggedy and sings to the little girl that’s just downright beautiful.

The first time I ever saw this cartoon was on a public domain VHS tape, featuring a worn-out NTA print of the cartoon. Later on, I sometimes wondered if there ever would be a highly restored version of it, and now, there is. I highly commend you for your work in making this cartoon look and sound so much better so that future generations can get a better idea of how it appeared in its initial theatrical release.

This is probably one of the most acclaimed cartoon shorts to ever come out of by Paramount’s Famous Studios and it’s a shame this and most of the other Famous standouts(including the other Raggedy Ann short From 1944,some of the best Popeye shorts from 1942-1948 and a few ones from 1949 and the 50’s including 1953’s 3D Popeye,The Ace of Space,several Casper and Herman and Katnip standouts and The Superman shorts)weren’t ever nominated for a Acadamy award for Best Animated Short film compared to Fleischer Studios and George Pal’s Puppetoon shorts. Poor Famous.

@@jrgensaint-croix1817NTA was the TV distributor that Paramount sold their pre-November 1950 cartoons to. Not just the TV rights, but the copyrights to the cartoons altogether. NTA’s prints often ended up being in poor quality, and they were ordered to remove Paramount’s name from the cartoons, so they did so by shoddily covering it up with black bars. Unfortunately, some cartoons are only available in their NTA versions. NTA’s successor ended up being bought out by Paramount many years later.

Typically for Famous Studios, they miss so many dramatic possibilities of a little blind girl wandering around her shabby street (which would get gentrified in the next decade) imagining it to be a magic amusement park. And the ear-piercing "You can see with your heart" at the end would set dogs howling. But it's a charming and moving cartoon, and looks dazzling it its restored Technicolor glory. Do you think Officer Flanagan likes Billie's mother a little? Halloween, everybody!
