"Unlike Titanic, our water tight door is fully functional" lmao
@Nutzkie2001
@Nutzkie2001 6 жыл бұрын
Point of correction: Contrary to what is stated at the 5:58 mark, the Titanic's water-tight doors functioned exactly as designed. The problem was that the water-tight bulkheads they were set in didn't reach high enough into the hull. (In hindsight, a rather glaring design flaw on the part of Thomas Andrews, but not the fault of the doors themselves.)

That’s what he meant.. the bulkheads on modern ships are fully sealed when the doors are shut.

@preciousogar6282
@preciousogar6282 7 жыл бұрын
Lol. You didn't get that. Those are fin stabilizers, which minimise the effect of the wind and waves on the vessel, so as to keep it stable...Thereby making sure the passengers onboard evjoy their vacation with minimal rolling of the ship.

Precious Ogar No. You didn't get that. Read my comment again. The guy says that they "will STOP you from having a very GOOD vacation". He probably meant to say "bad" instead of "good". Sure, he's nervous, I forgive him for this minor mistake lol

When I was a merchant marine a long time ago, all we had was a gyroscopic compass, a magnetic compass, a weather radar and the steering was either hydraulic on diesel powered vessels or steam operated on steam powered vessels. The engine commands were sent by a "telegraph" mechanism on the bridge which was connected to the "telegraph" repeater in the engine room mechanically with cable or chain. The navigation was done in the chart room by hand and calculations and sextants were often used. That was all. Today, even a 3 year old girl can command a huge ship or fly an aircraft because it is like electronic game that kids love to play. The ship and the aircraft can figure out where they are going by themselves. All that one has to do is program the departure location and the destination location into the FMS computer for aircraft and navigation management system on ship and the computers do the rest.

@@blueherc educate me on something please: What is the difference between the magnetic and gyroscopic compasses?
@blueherc
@blueherc 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnw2026 The answer is simple, you can look it up and get all the details but a simple explanation is that the magnetic compass points to the north magnetic field of the earth which is actually the south pole because it's the negative side of a magnet. But the magnetic north pole constantly shifts (it moves every year) and we need an instrument to continuously point to the true north (where all the longitude lines converge to one point) so a gyroscopic mechanism that spins by the power of an electric motor, finds that point and use it to indicate the position of a ship or aircraft from that point. The difference between a magnetic and a gyrocompass is about 11 degrees, for example if the magnetic compass indicates 079 degrees, the gyro will indicate 090 degrees or 500 km in distance (310.6 miles)

I wonder if any of the navigating officers know how to use a sextant nowadays?
@FacebookFantomet
@FacebookFantomet 7 жыл бұрын
David Macmahon I am currently going to school to become a deck officer, and we learned just recently how to use the sextant, our teacher, whom used to be a navigation officer in the navy, told us that the navy use the sextant often to sharpen their skills so that no matter what happens, they can still operate at 100% of their capacity. , but in commercial use the sextant is used less than before due to more advanced and reliable equipment. But everyone should know how to use it properly. Hope that gave you a little insight in current navigation education. Hope my english isn't too bad, greetings from Norway!

Yes, we learn and train to use a sextant. And we use it quite often now for training purposes with coastnavigation. After that I dont think we will use it anymore. We learn to use different methods and tools to navigate and to check other systems.

Why would you use a sextant nowadays? That relic instrument is obsolete. Technology on modern bridge is far more superior than 20 years ago. This kind of mindset needs to be thrown away, its slowing down the progression of the maritime industry. You don’t see an airline pilot using a sextant too right? They rely solely on their instruments.
