Now that we are in Texas, it's time to get that farmhouse, rustic feel into a project! These enclosed, raised beds will make gardening really enjoyable. Trying out some Hugelkultur!
100,000 subscribers. Wow. This project really is a love letter to the beginnings of this channel and hopefully captures the spirit of how I document projects. The very first video I made was the creation of a woodshed for firewood storage; it filled a need that I had at my new house. Two years later, I moved across the country and here I am, documenting the projects and sharing with 100,000 of you. My projects range from musical instruments to shop projects to unique mechanisms, so there's quite a wide range of topics, but somehow you all have the same appreciation for the craft of making things that I do. I can't thank you all enough for your support. I sincerely appreciate it. As I pass this huge milestone, I still have no shortage of ideas for projects, so I will continue to document and share with you all. No filler videos (which means irregular updates) but that just means that you'll get quality projects that are worth your time to enjoy.
Some notes on the build:
Pressure treated with a raised bed? Yeah, there's all kinds of debate on that. I did my due diligence to cover as much of it as possible so that the soil won't be touching it. But most studies have shown that modern pressure treated lumber doesn't leech anything in quantity into the soil, and what it does isn't bad. That said, do as I say, not as I do. Use cedar if you're really concerned.
Hugelkultur?! No, that's not a Schrute family tradition, though it might be used in beet farming. Basically it's a method of making raised beds that uses a fallen tree and mounding soil over it. I took the idea here to try it in the raised beds themselves. There are benefits to hugelkultur. It takes up plenty of space so that you don't have to fill it up with all the way with dirt. The wood, sticks and twigs retain moisture so that helps the soil from drying out. And as it all decays, it adds nutrients back into the soil. We'll see how that works out over the years!
More to come. Thanks for everything!

All due respect for a job well done. I'm reminded of something Andy Rooney said about gardening. "I was never so happy as to see one of my cute little cucumbers growing. The best I can figure they cost me about 329 dollars each !"

My husband built raised beds 12 ft X 4 ft, 5 of them 4 years ago with the corrugated metal. We put cardboard layers then lots of logs and sticks then added soil. We watered every 3 days for 2 weeks to settle the soil before planting. Maybe he didn't show that part because anybody would know about the soil settling. My beds still look brand new and are so easy to plant and harvest. Each bed cost $126 to build but they will last a long time.

Very nice job. Mine is very similar to yours but I did put PVC down at the bottom with a cap and a 90 with a threaded nipple so I can water from the bottom. I also live right by the beach. Got buckets of seaweed for minerals. I didn’t use chicken wire. I use one by two galvanized steel baby saver Poultry mesh. Made them into doors that are removable or swing out so you can work both sides of the bed. You’re really going to enjoy them. PS forgot to tell you I put a 3 gallon bucket drilled holes in it with a locking lid. I put my compost in there then added worms. This makes a huge difference. Thanks again for sharing God bless you

I did a similar project to this 20 years ago. (smaller scale). Nice to see you have used the Hugelkultur method, as the logs decompose you can add more as the soil levels will sink substantially. The weed mat not necessary though. I also lined my treated timber with polythene then a fews years later removed and sealed with a water based non toxic pond bitumen. I don't think you will ever get a return on investment but the ability to pick your own greens is priceless. Thank you for sharing.

There is a lot of thought that went into this. The use of weed cloth and the plastic liner will extend the life of this well into the future with the minimum of repair or replacement of wood. I would consider installing a light framework to act as a shed roof so you can hang bird netting, shade cloth, or plastic film roofing. Each one will increase your harvest by increasing your hot weather tollerance, stop bird damage or act as a season extender in the fall and cloch in the spring. The materal can be reused for many years.

He's using it to waterproof the inside of the raised beds so they will hold up longer. If he's using the right stuff it's a pond liner material and non toxic. I think what he's aiming for is a reservoir for water in the logs in the bottom of the raised beds and space filler also, but mostly a place for extra water to sit and the roots to reach down to. It's a good build I think a little expensive though. And won't last forever. I've build something much less elaborate with PVC tubing for framing and doors but my beds aren't built into the structure and are free standing more like crate planters. I'm in south Florida and wanted something that will hold up a long time yet that I could take down and put in the garage for hurricanes also. Mines more of a shade house.

@@MeasuredWorkshop put lots of earthworms in there to till the soil ,you are a great Craftsman but not very good in business models. Lol. Up above it near the top raise some rabbits and let the urine run to the outside and their poop will fertilize everything you got in there while the worms break it down and til the soil

While watching the build I was just hoping to see a diagonal based door design, this pleased me. I am a little hesitant on twig and stick based material in a plastic cover or the lack of water proof sealant on the exposed wood, but it was a great design.

this is something I am considering at some point. but I would like to do mine larger and to incorporate the compost bins at the end. Even considered having chicken wire across the top or nets to use it as an occasional protected chicken run.

I just might put a metal skirt onto my workshop that I'm building. Thanks for the idea!

Great job. My question is how does the water drain with a base of solid plastic covered by gravel?

The bottom under the gravel is weed cloth, not plastic. Inside the beds... I'm not 100% certain but I am fairly confident it's safe. Polyethylene sheeting doesn't contain BPA. And TRM is a California manufacturing company which California has the strictest standards of any state. This particular polyethylene sheeting is listed as safe for agricultural use.. what I don't know is if it's safe used in this particular manner or if it's meant more for like shade house roof use ect.
