Brandon and I had a few spare minutes today after we finished up some lawns, and wanted to do a video for you guys talking about enclosed trailers vs utility trailers.
I know this is a popular topic and conversation trying to decide which is better, an enclosed trailer or an open utility trailer for lawn care. We've ran both over the years, so I thought it would be fun to do a fresh video and weigh in on what we think are the pros and cons of both.
With a topic like this I feel like we could go on forever, but at the end of the day you have to decide which trailer works best for you. I do believe an open trailer is a safe bet, and you can't go wrong. But the benefits of an enclosed trailer for me personally made the decision that much easier, two of those points being free advertising and also security/storage.
At the end of the day, you have to figure out what works best for you and also the next few years of your business. Figure out where your business is going to be in a few years, and see what you may grow into with your business.
Which do you guys prefer, enclosed or open utility trailers? Leave us a comment down below!

I prefer a V nose enclosed for more security and keeping your equipment out of the elements. Plus I don't have a garage or storage building either. Plus I have to keep my trimmers and blowers in the house, so that's why I want an enclosed. I've had my 5x10 since 05! STARTED FROM THE BOTTOM, NOW WE'RE HERE!!

If you don't have a garage... enclosed for sure as you can carry a lot more equipment its like mini a mobile garage and your equipment is out of the elements... then when your ready to expand get a dump trailer cause they will be better for hauling material.

I think if your in a smaller town the open trailer is King as its cheaper and more versatile as you can pile up branches, skidsteers, lawn clippings on it, but if your in a larger metropolitan area then enclosed trailers are much better for the security BUT... that being said I think if you wanted a versatile business you could get a enclosed flat front box truck with a ramp at the back and then you could still haul or piles debris on a cheaper open trailer, I just think there's a better way to utilize space by setting up your truck to be able to haul things with the truck as well as the trailer, wether its a dump bed to be able to use for lawn clippings, branch and fall cleanup; or have it be enclosed soo that you store things you don't want visible to passersby. commercial vehicles are also more durable as their meant to last longer then a regular pickup and if you got it to where you didn't need the trailer all the time could be easier to manuver in tight residential streets, small parking lots, when a F250 is already $50k~ your already knockin at the door of those lower end commercial vehicles

Depends on your needs and how much money you have. I used an open trailer for over twenty years. I was tired of locking and tarping the equipment every night so I bought a twenty foot enclosed trailer. I love it and at the end of the day I padlock it and walk away. Nobody has mentioned it also serves as a private bathroom when the gopher wants to come out.

Definitely enclosed. Security is easier, on rain outs your equipment doesn't get wet or beat up by unnecessary sun exposure, no wasted time loading and unloading , you don't have to have a big shop to put your stuff in when you leave your house to go out to keep it safe. The list is long.

I’ve been mowing yards since I was in 4th grade! In high school I’ve started to expand. Before I could drive I mowed yards in town I could drive my mower to, as soon as I could drive I started with the tractor supply trailer (800$) like you said. Now this year (my senior year) I have purchased a 6.5 ft by 14 ft utility trailer brand new (1100$/it was a steal) and have just purchased a brand new exmark demo mower for (6500$) with about 20 hours on it from radius series (X) after years of putting in work it’s been awesome to finally see dividends here in my small town.

Guys. Get a dump truck and enclosed trailer. You won't regret it. Get nice used dump for 18 to 25k. Diesel is best. Enclosed trailer for security and it guarantees nothing coming out while driving.

You can't really haul mulch, limbs, tracto, or tall things in a enclosed trailer. However it's nice to keep your equipment dry. You can get by with a open trailer, not so much with the enclosed trailer.

I would definitely recommend the enclosed trailer. I've been in business almost 30 years and started out with just a truck with ramps and a 48 inch keys mower in the bed. That lasted the first year after that I went with a 16 foot double axle open trailer for a few years before moving to enclosed trailers in the mid-90s. We also have a 1 ton Chevy with a 16 ft landscape bed which comes very in handy.

ultimately you need both an enclosed trailer and an open utility trailer. I use my open utility trailer for brush haul off, mulch delivery, tree trimming haul off, etc... The Enclosed trailer is great for grass cutting because you can lock it up fast and it keeps your equipment out of the intense sunlight and rain, etc.. I will say it is easier to fuel up mower, etc.. at the gas station with an open trailer . When fueling using an enclosed trailer I have to unload my mowers to fill them up. As I said, if you're really looking to do lawn care at a commercial/residential level you really need both types of trailers.

I think Brandon hit the nail on the head when he talked about how much time it takes to load and unload every day. I actually went straight from a 48” walk behind in the back of a pick-up, to a 7 x 14 enclosed trailer. Definitely enclosed for me! Thankfully I have a friend with a dump trailer, so I use it when I really need it.

I have asked so many people to make a video on this and no one has. Kudos for you to actually listen to people and make one, bc now everyone who said they would is late to the party and will just be copying you now. Anyway. I love every aspect of an en closed trailer except when it comes to getting gas. I really enjoy my utility trailer but the sun beating down on my new Ferris is hard to watch. Or when I get done cutting and it starts pouring raining and my brand new Ferris is getting rained on while being hot. I can’t stand when I know all my brand new weedeaters and blowers will look like it’s 10 years old only after 8 months of use. It’s destruction on your equipment to outside all day long sunny or rainy. But I do love the convenience of the open trailer and it’s so easy to drive. It’s a perfect starter trailer if you’ve never towed before I would highly suggest getting a utility trailer first just for practice and getting comfortable with maneuvering a trailer first. Not to mention you can’t beat the advertisement an enclosed trailer offers you. Even when the gates down it’s just a big bill board.

I've always ran an open utility trailer. I bought a new trailer this year and seriously considered an enclosed trailer, and the main reason was to wrap it for advertising. But at the end of the day I bought another open trailer (7x14 tandem). It's more useful to me and it fits into my garage so I don't have to load and unload everyday or find somewhere to store a large enclosed.

I dream of owning a 14-16 ft enclosed trailer. I want a shiny black one with my logo on it. I also want a dump trailer for fall cleanups with a huge debree loader. I own a 2011 Toyota Tundra crewmax that tows my tractor supply company 5x8 utility trailer. I like the maneuverability of it and sight but can’t stand that I can’t protect my mower from rain and can’t fit my push mower so I have to pick it up and load/unload into my truck bed. This also forces me to store my backpack blower and all handheld equipment inside that cab to secure. Then I have to load/unload every-time. From a pure business perspective it will save me hours of time throughout a season upgrading to an enclosed trailer. Great video really brings points and ideas to the forefront that I’ve never even considered. Thanks for sharing and wow I like Brandon’s Chevy. All your guy’s equipment and trucks look amazing even his utility looks good.

I have an open trailer and take everything off at night mostly so it won't get rained on. I also have a dump insert on my truck and I think it solves a lot of problem for me. No more pitchforking crap out of the truck at the end of a long day and it turns into a leaf box in the fall. A must have in my opinion if you don't want a big dump truck. A enclosed trailer also makes sense to me and will be my next purchase.

HI Brian AN enclosed trailer is the best way to go. I started with an open trailer and stuff got lifted and even gas cans when it was $4 dollar gas. I know now I can put a gas container of a size in front and pump to fill mowers . You know you could put an dump on the back of your p/u and not even have a trailer to pull. The dump fits in the bed of your p/u... Thanks for helping Brian with his video's your input in just as important plus you come up with things that Brian doesn't at times. Its great that you can both work together on projects as well!

I've been using a 6x10 open suretrac for 5 years, I've got the 3 board high side like Brandon and it's been great. An enclosed would be nice to switch too for weather and security purposes, but for now the open trailer wins for mowing, fall clean ups, and mulch.

I was actually thinking about using a car trailer. With my small engine repair business which includes small compact tractors and I even hauled a car before and had to borrow a car trailer. For me I'm thinking about getting an 18 foot car trailer with a landscape gate on the back that is removable to replace with car Ramos incase I have to haul a car. I am not in the transport business, but when you can make an easy 500-1000 bucks for half a days work totally worth it. I also will have removable sides.

What it really comes down too is if someone has a their own shop. The only reason a smaller business would use an enclosed trailer is if they don’t have a shop to put everything in. A larger business has to use a large utility trailer because of the amount of equipment they carry, can’t put 3 zero turns in an enclosed trailer.

I finally jumped into a enclosed 7x16 and love it, i would much rather have a enclosed and have to rent a dump trailer when needed. Theft has been an issue . I thought 7x16 would be to big but it fills up fast with every little thing, and while it gets a little worse gas mileage the savings in having what you need on hand easily makes up for driving back and forth to get something you couldnt/didnt carry before. I can say the nice thing about the enclosed is because of how cold our temps swings are its easier to keep the engines at operational temps between jobs vs having to warm them up everytime, it went from upper 70s to low 20s now and our first snow has arrived.

Enclosed trailers are nice but running a open trailer lets my son run his lawn care with a much smaller truck. He’s been doing his with my ford ranger and keeps his overhead low. Less fuel to him equals more cash in his pocket. It’s always a trade off. I don’t think one is far superior to the other. It’s really about what’s important to the individual.

Also have a 5' by 8' landscaping trailer just to haul my more when I mow lawns. Can't see the point spending the money on a enclosed trailer other than storage bringing all my tools to a job Is pointless considering the price of fuel nowadays! If you know the job and the details of the job and bring the tools that you need you don't need to bring every tool that you own right? If you have read down to this point you might want to think about getting some magnetic signs for your trucks it's not perminent and you can put it on anything you own as metal is not that expensive they only cost me about a $100. I got them off of vista print four the biggest sign they had.

I feel both have advantages and disadvantages. Enclosed is nice because I can back my trailer into the driveway and walk away and is also nice when working with the "out of sight, out of mind" type feeling . With my open I am unloading it at the end of the day and putting mowers in the shop. With the open trailer much of the debris is blown off of the decks when you are driving and the mowers cool down quicker. My enclosed is very hot inside during the summer months. If I had to choose one, I think it would be the enclosed. They are also nicer to put your business name and number on. Like a moving billboard.

To use the enclosed trailer as a workshop you probably have to unload it first to make room.

Hey Guys, great Vid! Rainy day here in upstate NY and doing some "tubing" on here lol. I personally think everyone has different areas and application settings for each. I started out years ago running mowers and debris on my snowmobile trailer, 10x10..you do what you got to do. lol I now run my 7x12 Bri mar dump trailer for everything. I do a lot of specialty trimming work and it allows me to haul all my trimmings and cleanup debris along with a mower and or my vacuum systems. It also allows me to take some bigger jobs such as topsoil, clearing and light excavation as I have several years background as an operator. Hopefully some day I will be able to run one trailer of each for different applications! that would be my goal to keep 3 crews of two guys going during the spring/summer/fall.

We have been using a 6 x 14 enclosed for 5 years. Love being able to lock the doors at the end of the day and walk away. We are picking up our new trailer Monday. May have went a little too big but it will be used for a few other reasons other than lawn care. Hope to make a quick video tomorrow with the new rig although it will not be outfitted with lawn equipment yet.

I'm looking at an enclosed trailer as I do have some decent equipment and would need somewhere to store said equipment sure it might mean finding a place to store it but that don't matter. I also do alot of composting at my home premises so no need for a dump trailer. Just put it into garbage bags take bags off job site (only use bags when bin is full) and tip onto my compost pile.

Open trailers are more practical you can use them for both mowing and landscaping. Enclosed trailers can only be used for mowing you can load mulch or haul debris ect. If I owned an enclosed I would have to have a dump druck or a dump insert in my truck

Like the idea of a enclosed for equipment. A open trailer for hauling branches, lawn cuttings, landscape materials where you would not want to put in a enclosed trailer. So really you need both types, probably a lower priced utility trailer for hauling rough materials and large objects and enclosed where more equipment is needed.

I'm in Southern Ontario across the border from Michigan. I will look at Suretrack trailers. Where are they in Michigan? My border access point is Sarnia/Port Huron. I think this coming year I'm ready to go enclosed. I will check them out. Yes with rain all equipment gets wet plus the security is another aspect. Trailer plates are only $50.00 so would have a combo of both.

It's really awesome you said you have to start somewhere. Brian my name is Freddie I am starting from scratch. I just bought my first truck an 06' Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab and I have a Cub Cadet cc600 push mower, 1 weed eater Craftman, and an extension blower that attaches to the string Trimmer (I am getting a STHL trimmer. But that's my start, very humbling start. But I will grow as I can. My goal is to get a Cub Cadet Zero Turn and Utility trailer with Garden and trimner rack. That's all I'm missing and I know I will get there one day.

I would love an enclosed trailer. But it is not in the cards for me this year. Maybe next year though. But I do have those pack 'em racks for my utility trailer. I can lock my trimmers and blower on it with padlocks. And put my smaller stuff in the bed of my truck under the cover. P.s. i have the chevy silverado 1500 also lol.

Nothing beats an enclosed Trailer for advertising, professionalism, security, and protection from the elements. But you will definitely need an open trailer to dump mulch, rock etc. They both have their pros and cons and that's why we have both. If you're just starting... Open Trailer is definitely the way to go!

If you go to a RV/ Camper sales yard they have vents that can be opened while driving at highway speeds. There's a vented protective cover to keep the wind from bending breaking it. General RV or H & W RV can hook you up.

Im enclosed all the way but with that said dont forget a alarm on the trailer because instead of stealing a item on a open trailer they now may steal the whole enclosed trailer. Almost happened a couple weeks ago to me. Noticed my lock on the hitch was bent. Now its time for a alarm on the trailer. Someone wants it bad enough they are going to get it ya know.

enclosed - protection from the elements, security for equipment, less room for debris mulch etc utility - open trailer not protected from elements, equipment is out for everyone to see, more room for debris mulch etc... would rather get enclosed and have my own back, also has more room for advertising company name on all 4 sides ... see the place for both... but for my equipment... enclosed makes more sense 100%

I got an enclosed trailer from my parents, small one. I am now picking up leaves so I really need a utility trailer for hauling the leaf waste. Only trouble is I can't haul 2 trailers at once. In the city I live in the city comes and picks up yard waste. But do I want to take the time of putting the yard waste into the paper bags? I have done that, and then leave anywhere from 5-20 bags sitting in front of customers homes waiting for pick-up. Of course next year I am going to work it out to get to my customers a day or two before pick-up day, if I have to leave bags. I don't catch grass except for a couple of people. I am just thinking about fall cleanup. The one property I have in mind, is huge. I have the back of the truck FULL of yard waste now, and really did not finish the job. I can off load what I have at a place that takes yard waste. But again, it is the travel time to get there and then get back to load again. This year is definitely a learning experience for me. Thanks for all your videos. I do get a lot out of them. I would be happy to send you my logo, just email me at behrlawn1208@gmail.com

Just thought I’d let you know. If you start looking at a 450/4500 make sure that you are allowed to park in your Nabor hood. I bought a ram 4500 just to find out that the city I live in doesn’t allow anything over a 1 ton vehicle to be parked in our city.

Hello, my question is not related to trailers, although great video, very informative. My question, so we are new to the lawn care business in south texas, my self and my dad run a lawn care company called A&B Services. We have been working very hard to establish biweekly mowing clients and customers. Not my question is once you have a full schedule how do you plan for bad weather? Obviously you can but isn’t recommended to be mowing in the rain. What do you do? What do you tell your clients and customers? Also thanksgiving is coming up, once running a full schedule what do you do about taking time off for the holidays such as Thursday thanks giving and Friday day after thanksgiving? What do you do with those customers that were scheduled for that Thursday or Friday? Sun is beginning to set earlier and earlier, less day light hours per day, time change is approaching soon. We could double up a few jobs a few days earlier and a few jobs later but there us no way enough time to catch everyone of our jobs that would be up due again for mowing on Thursday thanksgiving and then again on Friday. Approximately 30+ mowing jobs between 2 days. Even if Monday through Wednesday we did an additional 3-4 mowings that still would not cover everything. Any tips for our brand new business? How should we handle the holiday situation? And then how should we handle the weather throwing off our schedule? Thanks in advance.

Besides pros and cons, a needs analysis should be done. One trailer is really a shed on wheel (it's storage) and the other performs work (it's utility). The utility can be used for both but the enclosed can't. So initially the utility might be the most useful choice. Theft should be a concern but not the deciding factor. The advertising on the enclosed one is a great advantage; again a consideration but not a deciding factor.
