I feel a spiritual connection here. Just stumbled on this video after I finished inquiring about visiting a shop in Nagoya to purchase a black dial red arabic numeral 6850 myself. Thanks for the details of your experience! I guess I can expect not to haggle.

I'd love to know if you found the 6850! Is it the Sahara model?

1:37 I know that area of Shinagawa very well - I've been up and down the stairs on Platform 13 and 14 hundreds of times. 3:57 Whoa, that's the very same shop where I got my 2nd Tudor Hydronaut - the one with the black dial, that I had switched out to the mother of pearl dial at RSC. Gotta love a good and honest watch hunt - and this was one! You win some, you lose some, but it's all about the journey (and some good YT content to boot!). I think you were right to walk. Rakuten prices include tax, so something's off about his calculation. He might have thought you went so far out of your way making reservations, and going all the way there to see it, that you were committed enough to it to suck it up. I'm glad you didn't!

@@watchsymposium Wow you picked up your hydro #2 there? I was wondering how many people make their way out here given the amount of listings they had online. Great point on them holding the price as I told them I was coming from Kyoto. Lesson learned hahaha

good on you for not being afraid to walk away. I almost bought a first gen planet ocean in Osaka from a store that was having a closing sale, but the salesperson treated me with disgust and acted so annoyed at all my questions. Even if I saved a few hundred dollars, the watch experience would have ruined the watch and its future memories for me
@oddpout3 ай бұрын
Haha as much as we say 'price is everything, service don't matter', there's a limit to how far we'd go. In my case it was the reverse

Think you did good on holding off on buying the watch. If you go on a watch quest again, nail the price down and discounts with dealer.

Thanks, Im going to find another one in the future - will definitely do those things first!

Hello Oddpout, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos-they're always a highlight for me! I'm traveling to Japan soon and am considering purchasing a used Tudor Black Bay 58 with box and papers. I've seen prices around $2,900 after tax on Chrono24. Do you think this is a reasonable price, or might I find it cheaper in shops while I'm there? Thank you, and keep up the fantastic work!
@oddpout3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! I think $2900 USD is very reasonable if it's in nearly new condition. You likely won't find much cheaper, especially in Nakano. Go see it and try it in person!

Looked like a cool watch, I haven't considered Frank Muller before but that did seem to wear really well. Makes no sense to me why the price would be higher in person than on chrono-24, I would've also walked away if that was the case.

Yea unfortunately the price was not justified. FM are great watches on the second hand market if you dig the design!

At least you were able to walk out without the devil in yourself said, "you came all the way here, blah, blah, blah...!" There is always the next watch. It's a buyer market. I am in HK and have to control myself for the exact reason you gave about the Canadian customs and taxes add-on (5% customs and ONT 13%) 🤬 . Second-hand watches should be tax-free, IMO.
