By this point, we had Kirk, Spock, Scotty and Sulu. (although Sulu was a mathematician here, which didn’t really fit him in my opinion) About half of the crew we know and love. McCoy, Uhura and Chekov had yet to appear on the show so it was still incomplete in this episode. Although fast foreword to Season 2 and the main crew is fully formed.

I'm glad Leornard Nimoy decided to get rid of the "shouting" Spock.
@exoplanet11

Agreed. It shows you how much an actor can mature in a role. At this point Nimoy was probably feeling like he was lucky to have a regular job, and would do whatever the director seemed to want. But luckily he was allowed to develop the character and did an excellent job of it.
@soylentteal

@@exoplanet11 Much of the Spock we know came to be in the first regular filmed episode, "The Corbomite Maneuver." Director Joseph Sargent advised Nimoy to react in a more impassive manner and also suggested his defining catch-word, "Fascinating." There were still a few bumps along the way, such as his broad smile in the SECOND regular episode, "Mudd's Women," as he introduces Kirk to Harry Mudd.

I believe Nimoy thought Vulcans would raise their voices because of Humans' relatively poor hearing. It was supposed to emphasize his alienness.

Gary could hold hands with a member of the crew AND steer the ship----he was just that good at multitasking. Rumor had it Gary could also complete an assigned duty-roster, recalibrate the main sensory array, trouble-shoot any malfunctioning food synthesizers and take a sonic-shower all within 15 minutes tops. No wonder Kirk asked for him on his first command.

I like the unremastered SPFX more. It's what I watched when growing up in the '60's. Also, if any of you out there know STTOS as intimately as I do, you will notice that tiny scenes or lines are shaved from the remastered episodes in order to devote more time to showing off the nifty new SPFX at the expense of the show itself.

Agreed. I think the barrier was actually better done in the original. It looked like it was composed of energy--active and vibrant. This CGI version makes it look like a nebula. Also don't understand the need for the viewscreen to be given the widescreen treatment. I felt the original FX still held up even today.

This is my favorite scene from the original series. The first time I saw it (I was about 8 when the re-runs aired), I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen -- still do. The problem with the re-master is that they ruin the visual narrative: When the Enterprise enters the Barrier, we're already there waiting; in the original, we're on board as the ship ventures into the unknown. It's a small but critical change.

@@scottmcintosh4397 The refit was supposed to be done before Kirk assumed command of the Enterprise, when Chris Pike was promoted. I guess the bridge wasn't refit until sometime later. Gotta love how their display technology on the big view-screen has so many lux (or lumens or nits) that the crew has to shield their eyes. Who would design such a thing that its brightness range is damaging to the eyes?! Not so much in this particular instance but other episodes were everybody’s holding up their arm to shield themselves from the display.

@BingBreep-mk6om
@BingBreep-mk6om Жыл бұрын
Well a typical circut breaker will still not stop a close lightning strike from jumping the contacts inside it and frying the stuff plugged into the outlets. That's what a GOOD, expensive lightning arrestor is for. Those power strips with the cheap 10 cent mov in them and the scammy 10,000 dollar "guarantee" don't count BTW. The ones you need are simaler to the ones radio stations and phone switching stations use to protect the equipment within. But here, they were being hit with forces they didn't understand, and the energy might have been travelling straight through the hull to get to the circuits, so any kind of protection might not have done much good in this situation.

The TOS Enterprise was built like a pinball machine and even sounded like one....sort of. Then the TNG was more of a laptop. Both were a sign of their real times. In one episode you see Uhura soldering wires. The 23rd century was pretty basic back in the 60's. Good times actually.

I wouldn't say that, but the original barrier was *MUCH* creepier looking. The original was a vaugly defined band, almost featureless, and had a true feel of mystery and forboding. Here, it looks like the kind of nebula we've seen Voyager go into a billion times before, so it loses a lot of it's edge :|
@soylentteal
@soylentteal 5 жыл бұрын
@@plateshutoverlock One annoying inconsistency, the tips of Enterprise's warp nacelles, was corrected with the remastering. The original shot of Enterprise (without the nacelle "bubbles") approaching the barrier was used over and over at the end of numerous regular episodes and the fact that the nacelles didn't match the post-pilot shots always bothered me. But we old Trekkers are, perhaps, more sensitive.

So true! Vic Mignogna and the fan production Star Trek Continues gave the Star Trek original series a remarkable close and fitting end to their five year mission, and set the stage for Star Trek: The Movie with their two part episode, "To Boldly Go," Parts I and II. They drew directly from this episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before." The plot was complex and surprising, the drama was taut, and the acting, direction and production values were exceptional. Far beyond anything anyone could ever expect from a fan production. Rod Roddenberry, Gene's son, said that the 11 Star Trek Continues episodes should be treated as canon.

The Earth is about midway from the center of the galaxy to the rim (30,000 LY in, 30,000 LY out or so). At 24th century warp speeds you can travel around a thousand light years in a year. So it should've taken the Enterprise 30 years MINIMUM to reach the galactic rim (and thus the barrier) if they flew straight from Earth where the Enterprise was built. But 23rd century warp speeds were much slower, so it would've taken way longer. And Warp 1 is the speed of light, which would've taken 30,000 years from Earth. Lolwut?

Was Khan your astrophysics instructor....you exhibit 2 dimensional thinking. 1000ly thick and less than half that where we are in the Orion-Cygnus arm. So 200 to 300ly to the barrier on the Z axis. Now as they were on batteries...and let's say Impulse repaired....impulse has to be FTL as Kirk says years in the distance...not centuries. Also they reached a United Earth fuel and supply depot in just a few days without warp.....interesting as why build a century old depot on the edge of the galaxy where NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE?.... So the depot had to be at the edge of Earth Colony space....yeah there is no mention of UFP till the end of Season 1. So impulse is FTL...except when it isn't....then it is again like in ST6.
