Encounter with the Self

When we are faced against a wall, and all seems lost, it is not unusual to have an encounter with the Self. This is symbolically represented in the biblical motif of Jacob wrestling with the “dark” angel, and while he dislocated his hip, his struggle prevented a murder. That is how one grows: by being defeated decisively by greater beings. In a sense, Jacob wrestles with himself, and afterwards becomes reborn, receiving the new name, Israel, he who wrestles with God. Jacob finds his identity by wrestling with his dark side, and discovers the light. There are four features of this story, an encounter with a superior being, wounding, perseverance, and divine revelation, that together form the theme of “the encounter with the Self.”

As soon as he said dark angel, I was out. Content creators especially when speaking on biblical texts need to review the work before putting it out there. Scripture clearly says it was God and also says, angel of the Lord which many scholars say whenever angel of the Lord is used, it is actually God in angel form. It’s believed that the angel of the Lord, being God in angel form may have even appeared as Jesus but since the angel of the Lord is only in the Old Testament than they would not have known what Jesus looked like yet. Go back to scripture and see all the time “angel of the Lord” is mentioned and you will see that it’s not any ordinary angel but sounds more like the Lord himself. To input that it was a dark angel, is changing scripture and adding and taking away from it which is forbidden. Yeah his explanation may have sounded cool and deep but it’s false because number one, the angel was not dark, it was a battle with God and two, what does murder have to do with anything. I always interpreted that part of the story with Jacob of him being fearful of visiting his brother because he didn't want to face the consequences of how he wronged him; but we find out the brother wasn't mad anymore so how did that prevent a murder?

Yeah, it seems like our dude throws in the line "prevent a murder" just to add drama. Jacob feared Esau might kill him when they met, hence the sleepless night. Probably if Jacob had run away, then Esau would have chased him down to kill him.

The Angel of the Lord is has in some traditions been seen as another title of Christ. Many times in Scripture people realize that this Angel, though divine, presents as human, and is actually God himself. This makes both theological and psychological sense as many times people must encounter a higher being on their way to psychological transformation. This is also an encounter with the self because man is created in the image of God.

Dark angel? Most translations of Genesis say that Jacob wrestled with “a man“. In the book of Hosea, he wrestles with an angel (translated from the original malakh). There’s nothing about a “dark angel” that I can find in any translation? Jacob does not lose. He wrestles with the angel/man until daybreak and the angel dislocates Jacob’s hip. Still, Jacob will not let the angel go until the angel blesses him. The angel seems impressed and asks what Jacob‘s name is. He then changes Jacob‘s name to Israel and Jacob renames the land…. is it just about struggling with the self? Is it about struggling with the super ego? Or is it just the story about a man wrestling with another man?

Jacob is wrestling with Christ. He had been disobedient to God until this point. It's why the angel asks Jacob what his name is, since he previously lied to his own father, pretending to be Esau. Jacob's hip is dislocated and he walks with a limp for the rest of his days. God may sometimes have to wound us in order to secure our obedience.

Jacob wrestled with GOD the creator not himself. Please read the book of Genesis 32 v 22-32 in the bible. Jacob didn't grow by wrestling himself, Jacob wrestled with GOD to stop him from leaving Jacob and his hip was dislocated in the process. When GOD saw Jacob not willing to let him go, he blest Jacob and his descendants and changed his name to Israel.

It was God Himself, not a "dark angel". He renamed Jacob "Israel (Wrestles with God)". Jacob actually beat Him, and so He dislocated his hip. Even so, Jacob still managed to pin Him and wouldn't let Him go until He had blessed him, hence the name, and the fatherhood of a nation and all that. Read Genesis 32 again and then revise your script.
