In the last of our Encounter Series Revd Dr Sam Wells, Vicar of St Martin’s asks the Most Revd Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, about how he has encountered God, in his own life. His work before he was ordained, his call first to priesthood and then to become Bishop of Durham and then Archbishop of Canterbury. How has God shaped and guided his life and how has he found God present both in times of achievement, joy and thanksgiving but also through his times of struggle and tragedy. This promises to provide an inspirational insight both into the Archbishop of Canterbury’s own faith journey but also the way we encounter God in the story of our own lives.

~💜💜💜~ i am always delighted when i have an unexpected "encounter" with Archbishop Welby. Very grateful for the opportunity on Ash Wednesday 2023 to have been "present" to a "private" conversation occurring in September 2018.....candid, engaging dialog about God -- sprinkled throughout with dry witty humor, as well as such obvious affection between these two men. This quire unplanned time travel outing (compliments of KZbin) has truly been a Gift of Grace for me -- especially today. And at the risk of sounding more than a wee bit crazy, i now find myself wondering if perhaps this "trip" was somehow mysteriously and divinely Pre-Planned ¿?¿

I have only just discovered the many youtube videos of Archbishop Welby speaking on useful topics. I am enjoying listening to them at home in the evenings very much. This video is the first time I have encountered the information that Archbishop Welby had a period in the news a few years ago triggered by someone letting him know that his biolofgiical father was someone named Anthony Browne. I googled that just now and read one of the articles that came up with the topic. As a pediatrician who has been called upon in my work to do a fair bit of genetic counseling, I have three thoughts on that topic. First, thanks to the history of the Eugenics Movement and also to customs handed down in European Culture regarding second babies and "luck", the Archbiship is hardly the first person to receive such news as an adult. I found out all sorts of things as an adult once I had finished my medical training. And though I look too much like my dad ever to imagine that I had been conceived by someone else, merely finding out other facts, both about my own family's heritage and about the existence of the Eugenics Movement (and that my grandfather was almost certainly a prolific donor) was plenty big a shock in itself. It has certainly changed my views on American society and caused me to read up on the history of Eugenics, likely a beneficial exercise. Second, just out of curiosity, I wonder whether anyone else has noticed the facial similarity of Archbishop Welby to an American Episcopalian political commentator, who is often seen on PBS's Newshour, named David Brooks? It doesn't matter, and it's not my business, but I just thought I'd mention the resemblance, which certainly could be due to chance or to a more distant common ancestor, such as a grandfather. Third, in my humble opinion, that certainly be mistaken, I think Mr. Browne's face looks rather like that of President Teddy Roosevelt, which would make his descendants related to all sorts of gifted and interesting people in every country in the world, not just through President Roosevelt himself, but also through his niece, Eleanor Roosevelt, whose children were quite prolific as well. I wouldn't have mentioned any of this, had Archbishop Welby not mentioned the old news story in this talk. It really doesn't matter, does it? Baptism is what matters. Now we belong to Christ, whoever our ancestors might have been. But I do empathize with having one's world view change when one is already a mature adult, as mine changed upon learning, in 2009, about the Eugenics Program and learning that, though my pwn parents truly are who they are listed to have been on my birth certificate, nearly every other birth certificate in my family is....shall we say.....incomplete, thanks largely, but not exclusively, to the Human Eugenic Breeding Program. I am thinking that, perhaps, when the Covid pandemic and other events that are consuming my time at present are over, it could be my distinct pleasure to write a nicely researched scholarly article that rakes over the coals the Human Eugenics Program, not merely for the terrible yet scientifically false notions that supported it, but also for the profound ignorance and hubris that allowed it to do all sorts of harm to ordinary people. I have enjoyed this talk very much, and look forward to watching additional talks on youtube by the Archbishop on related topics. @@pastorjjohn4149 Dear Pastor: If I had any money at all in my purse or any bank account, I would surely tithe to assist these children so that they need not live in poverty. However, I, myself, have been targeted by a white supremacist hate group, due to the fact that as a pediatric doctor, I provided good, respectful, medical care to minority patients in the course of my work as a doctor in a post with a clinic in a rural, Northern, white-supremacist area of America. (I am speaking of the states of North Dakota and Minnesota, where, though many of the people are good, kind Christians of all denominations and other religions faiths, many others in that region of America believe, to this day, in the evils of White Supremacy and Eugenics.) Having been targeted by this hate group for doing my job as a doctor to help minority children in a rural American clinic, having been targeted by a hate group that tries to pressure doctors into providing bad care to the families that the hate group hates, I have been under attack now for about eight years, and am at this point in my life, economically destitute. I myself am in need of financial support, until I can fight off the many slanderous and other attacks that the hate group has made on me, my career, my reputation, and my family. Thus, until I overcome the terror of the domestic white supremacist hate group in the USA that targets nonracist doctors, I have to rely on public assistance, myself, until I can overcome the attacks and return to my calling as a doctor. Thus, I have no money to send you at this time, because I have no money even for food or rent, having spent all my savings on legal fees to defend myself against the hate group. Rest assured that I will support nonracist doctors and charities when I return to my former work as a doctor, and have money to live on, as well as money to donate in charity. Until then, I am rather in need of charity myself, merely to afford to live. Thus, since our respective callings are both in the same area of work, namely helping children, you helping children to rise above poverty, and my helping children to transcend and surmount medical illness, we are "on the same team", spiritually speaking. I will pray for the success of your good, charitable works. However, at present, I do not have money even to support myself, and thus have, literally, not a penny to spare to send to your charity mission. Thus, please pray for me, in return, that I succeed in overcoming the attacks of the white supremacist hate group in every way, and very soon return to work and prosperity and health and freedom from hate groups, so that I can continue my work as called by God, can support myself, and can, at times, contribute to the charitable work of my fellow Christians.
