Arthur C Clark's Mysterious World. He told the story of a tourist who wanted to sleep on the beach at Komodo and was warned against it. He did it anyway and the next morning all that was left was a shirt and Komodo dragon tracks.

From a young age, I was always interested in reptiles and I used to keep a bunch of them at home. I never stopped wanting to the Komodo, and finally I was blessed enough to do so!

I ran into one of those pit vipers here in Vietnam. As i discovered they can move faster than i can run. Which is why all the Vietnamese ran screaming away from it, and stupid white guy tourist, me, got closer to take a photo. After the snake displayed how fast it could move, next time I will join the locals in the panic run for safe space 🤣 That tourist venture looked to be not so bad. Like you, Ive discovered the worst parts of any country will generally be found on a guided tour.

It’s not so easy to get helicoptered to a hospital either. As far as tours go that one was pretty awesome. Met some nice folks from the UK and Jakarta. Had some great convos which unfortunately didn’t make it to video
