End Cities, Shulkers, and Elytra! ▫ Minecraft Survival Guide S3 ▫ Tutorial Let's Play [Ep.51]

The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20.2!
In this tutorial, we explore the End Cities - structures which contain some of the most valuable loot in the game.
Our first End City has an End Ship, and not much else, so we board it in search of Elytra - a set of wings which allow players to glide (and even fly using firework rockets).
Aboard the ship we also find a potion brewing stand; a handful of diamonds, iron, and gold; and several Shulkers, which drop the shulker shells required to create Shulker Boxes - chests with portable contents!
Deeper into the End dimension, we discuss how to find additional End Cities once you've discovered your first one, where to look for loot in the larger towers, and how your newly acquired Elytra can help if you prepared beforehand!
We also discover a return gateway which allows us to get back to the central End islands from further out in the void, and on returning home, we add Purpur Blocks and End Stone to our storage system.
Along the way we discuss the Purpur family of blocks, End Rods, how to fight shulkers effectively, and how to grow chorus fruit back at home!

One way to get slightly higher chances for shulker shell drops without going into melee range is putting the bow into your off-hand and a looting sword into the main hand. Right-click still fires the bow as usual, but as long as you hold a looting sword in your *main* hand, its looting applies to any kills the game attributes to you, including arrows fired from your bow or TNT you lit with a fire arrow, flint and steel or fire charge. (Obviously the off-hand bow strategy means you can't use a shield or totem of undying.)

Over in bedrock, as long as you swap back the sword quickly enough after firing the arrow, it still counts as a melee attack for the looting purposes.

Sometime, someone needs to record and timelapse the full trip through the End. I was so taken aback by how far I had to travel to find my first End city. Yes, doing this the "legit" way can take ages. IIRC cities have a 50% chance to generate with the ship, so you might even have to find a couple of end cities before you can switch to aerial search mode. I won't blame anyone who uses the arcane art of "tabbing out" to seek council with the higher beings of Chunkbase and the like.

This one's for the Bedrock players: absolutely bring a Looting 3 sword. A single shulkers on Bedrock can drop up to 4 shells. I got around 60 shells from only 5 or 6 cities.

Easiest end islands I've seen, I had to travel thousands and thousands of blocks, make like 10 bridges and raid 4 end cities before I found one with the ship, that city was absolutely massive and nearly died getting that great view from up here achievement when I accidentaly levitated out from a big tower and got many hits with shulker bullets.

You can also eat chorus fruit when levitating to teleport to a solid block, preventing any fall damage

It will do several (16) attempts to find a teleport location, but only looks downward from the randomly chosen location to find a solid block to teleport onto. If you're already falling, there might not be any such block in range anymore.

@@TheRealWormbo If you're more than 8 blocks above the ground, chorus fruit will teleport you as far as it needs to *vertically*, within 8 blocks horizontally. So it's useful to get the Great View From Up Here achievement, or just survive a great fall.

Another good use for water buckets when end raiding is that you can’t levitate while in water! You can place the water down and use it to stay in one spot, or move down, when fighting shulkers

I agree with your strategy of waiting to get Elytra. I usually do all the things in the overworld and nether that I need before I head to the end. It's a totally different post-game world once you have Elytra and you start building with the assumption of Elytra.

elytra is something in minecraft that I feel is perfectly balanced. it’s an endgame item, and while it isn’t particularly difficult to acquire, it’s not easy to get a large supply of them. they’re pretty op but also pretty rare, so while they can break, they can be repaired. I think there are a lot of things in minecraft that could be better balanced, but elytra is not one of them imo

its also not that strong, it just allows to explore the world faster. theres almost nothing an elytra allows you to do that isnt possible with out it. it also really lowers ur health since u lose a chestplate and a protection 4

I like using Slow Falling potions constantly while fighting the dragon and pacifying End Cities. They're not too terribly expensive once you've made a little setup for capturing phantoms in boats.

I have a ton of respect for you for playing past 50 episodes with no elytra. These days, its an almost unheard of feat. Hope you still use your chestplate occasionally or stick to non-flying means of transportation occasionally. There isn't much of a practical reason to do so, but it helps keep you grounded in your world, no pun intended. Flying everywhere is in a lot of ways, not a natural way to experience the game, even though I will readily admit the elytra is my favorite item in the game.

I think you sum up the end game dilemma pretty well here. It's hard to resist the lure of these powerful items but relying too hard on them can remove you from the basic (no pun intended :)) pleasures of the survival game.

I get where you're coming from, but I disagree. At least for me, I don't "fly everywhere" with my wings. They just grant freedom to move around quicker and are a lifesaver when travelling thousands of blocks away. In my current hardcore world, I live in a desert village. The nearest forest is a few hundred blocks away so it was an absolute nuisance to swim there (despite having depth strider 3) whenever I ran out of wood. I got the elytra just today, and it's such a relief that I can go there in mere seconds.

I always break the chests as I find them in the end and then use them with the Shulkers. I find it saves on the wood usage so I have more for bridging between islands.

Since I mostly play in peaceful mode I made a custom datapack with a recipe to craft shulker shells from 4 turtle helmets. It’s a bit easier than harvesting shulkers from The End but still requires a fair amount of work to breed the 40 turtles required to craft each shulker box, plus it allowed me to use shulker boxes before attempting to fight the dragon … which I still eventually did in order to get my elytra.

Looting 3 gives a 68.75% chance to get the shell drop, so while doing that 6 times in a row is only about a 10% combined chance, that's still not outrageously rare.

I hate End City raiding so much because of the constant barrage of shulker bullets. It's nothing I can't handle gameplay-wise, it's just not fun to me. I think I might try my hand at a shulker farm this time around so I just have to deal with it once while making the farm and then I'm done.

Do it! If you prefer not to transport a shulker to the overworld (as long as you can build right at world spawn, it's not actually that bad), you could even build it right at an end city, at the expense of not being able to build a chunk loader right there.

I usually destroy the mast of the ship so that, on return trips to The End, I can easily tell which ships I've already raided if I randomly end-up in an area I've already explored. I'll also destroy parts of an End City when they don't have ships for the same reason. I've found the elytra to be helpful when dealing with shulkers, since you can glide downward after you get hit with a shulker bullet.

Some recent-ish version changed it so you can no longer activate the elytra while under the effect of levitation. You have to wait for it to wear off, but then you can use the wings to cushion your fall as with any other fall from greater heights.

That could indeed be a design goal, but ultimately the mast is part of what makes a ship shape easier to recognize as "ship". Either way, it's a great way to mark the ship as looted in a more obvious way to other players on a server, by taking it down.

(Disclaimer: this info is true for 1.16.1, the version most commonly used by speedrunners; since this game mechanic may be unintended or caused by a bug, I'm not sure if it's true or not for more recent versions) when you travel through one of the 20 main end island gateway portals, the end gateway that is generated on the other side is slightly unique (with twenty of them spawning on suitable terrain as close as possible to the main end island). Sending the player through such a gateway will teleport you back to the corresponding main end island gateway as expected, but sending a mob in a boat or minecart through these gateways will often not work. Instead the mob-in-a-boat will travel through the gateway, be unable to teleport to the main end island (unless you've added a specific arrangement of blocks around the corresponding main end island gateway), and the game will as a failsafe send the mob-in-a-boat back to the outer end gateway you just tried to send it through. This bizarre circumstance doesn't happen with other outer end gateways, known as "end_gateway_return" in game, of which an unlimited number can spawn all throughout the outer end (even as far away as the end world border). These gateways send the player (and a mob-in-a-boat) back to the main end island's obsidian platform, and have no such issue with transporting a mob-in-a-boat. Thus when sending shulkers back to the main end island (presumably to then take to the nether/overworld through the central end portal), you must find an end city close to one of these randomly generated gateways, rather than one of the close 20 gateways that pop into existence after beating the dragon & travelling through the corresponding main island gateway. To reiterate, the mob-in-boat-failed-to-teleport-aw-shucks-send-it-back-to-the-gateway-it-came-from-I-guess procedure happens in 1.16.1 ...it may have been fixed since then in a way that I am unaware of. Also it may well be that Pix didn't save a shulker at that city just because he didn't want to add to his script something along the lines of "we're sparing a shulker's life for a future shulker farm - how will that work? don't worry about it, I'll be back here in 130 episodes ;) " for the sake of narrative flow or episode runtime :P

The city only needs to be reasonably close to an outer end gateway. If it's a random one, the obsidian platform is a good enough place to arrive. Even being a couple hundred blocks away from one isn't a big issue, as he has an iron farm and can easily craft a lot of rails. You don't even need powered rails for this, since furnace minecarts are a thing. (RIP Bedrock players)

The wings will be fine, you can even repair them with phantom membrane a number of times. But don't do that too often, as repeated anvil operations inevitably make the repair (or any future enchanting) impossible regardless of your level count. (Anvil operations that are more expensive than 39 levels are restricted to Creative mode. Only pure renaming is still allowed at that point.)

If you're hesitant to throw an ender pearl, remember that ender pearls have the exact same trajectory that snowballs do. So you can throw a snowball first as a test. Also: Feather falling does NOT decrease kinetic damage.

That's a really good tip. A while ago I was exploring a city, and thinking pearls had the same straight trajectory as Eyes I threw it directly at the mast. Through some insane luck I ended up on one of the stair blocks under the portholes. Nearly gave myself a heart attack.

I defeated the ender dragon and went threw a portal. and walked in the same direction looking for a ship over 4000 blocks but I forgot in which direction I walked . I'm not great at it, but I know in the Overworld at least, you can look at your coordinates to figure out which direction you're moving toward...but I don't know if the main end island is technically closer to/at 0, 0? If it is, you could try moving toward 0, 0 and see if that gets you closer to the central island, or at least an island with a portal?
