Woo hoo! You all are KILLING IT! I don't know if you remember I commented a few months back that I'd moved into my car in August as a part of becoming debt free (gave up my Apt and took on another full time job). At the end of this month I will have paid off 16K....credit cards will be gone! Next I'll start on some home repair loans! I'm so motivated by your journey.

@ I get it ! Even when following DR we had issues with the whole 401k match omission and did not follow that recommendation … BUT i do think in certain situations ( very young and low debt total ) you would be better off stoping contributions… Glenda

What a banner year! Clearly you made the right decision in focusing on debt payoff. I know it’s disheartening to cut back on the investing (it’s breaking my heart to see these great prices on ETF’s and REIT’s as soon as we decided to cut way back ourselves), but life is full of choices and we make the best decision we can at the time for our families and our finances and then let the chips fall where they may. I still think you’re on a solid path to debt freedom much sooner than even your most recent estimate, and I’m here for it! You’ve done and continue to do an amazing job of holding the line on spending and prioritizing what works best for your family, and I know how hard it gets as time goes on to keep doing that. Great job! One more focused year and you should be nearly home free, so hang in there for the celebration (and that incredible family cruise is just about in sight)!

Thank you, Laura! Not investing as much has been SO hard! I have to keep reminding myself over and over why I’m going it so that I won’t go back 😅 I am already starting to day “maybe I shouldn’t stop saving for out EF when we hit 3 months,” but I know that if I can cut that out of the budget we’ll be debt free even sooner which would also help us in an emergency. I just need to get out of my head 😂 But yes, hopefully one more hard, focused year, and then 2026 shouldn’t be too bad!

Amazing year Katie! I think I can relate to the mindset shift. May I say that when you get down to the end you will (I think, and I predict) that your two will really step up and make even more amazing progress. Sue and I just passed the two year anniversary of paying off everything, I still two years later cannot really wrap my head around the whole concept. It really changes everything. I think you will retain the habits of watching your money and will start investing serious dollars and do it with so much pride and satisfaction because you two will not have the chains of debt in the back of your minds, you will be able to go full throttle. This year 2025 is going to be different for Sue and me. This is the year, no kidding. I have planned and schemed and gone over the numbers every possible way and then some. Barring something unexpected, we will put at a minimum $89K aside. I'm really looking at $95K and hoping for $100K That is going to be difficult but it's not totally impossible. Warren Buffet has stated that part of his success was luck. So yeah, luck will work but the bulk of it is hard work and discipline. Saving and investing is a lot of fun when you are not being worried about debt. Trust me on this.

Great question! I don’t regret buying the car at all. I think that I would regret it if I stretched it out for 7 years, but since we are on track to pay it off within 2 years of buying, I don’t think that we’ll end up paying all that much in interest, and it was definitely worth the peace of mind for our family since our previous car had some expensive issues 😩

You’re good! I think I just have it in my head that this is the vehicle I’m going to keep for the next 10-12 years, so I’m ok with the payment and the cost (as long as we can pay it off quickly). I’d rather have this vehicle that has good reliability that I know has been well taken care of than get something for half the price that only last for a couple of years because then I’d have to buy something else anyway. That’s probably not the best logic, but that’s where I’m at ☺️

If you pay off $50k-$60k in 2025, you'll be entering '26 in the $20k-$30k ranges and that is incredulous when you consider the 2024 starting balances! Unless something big happens, I can see a $50,000 pay off and you down in the $30k range; probably more but at $50k its still a big deal.
