End of a short life. A male barn owl kills the offspring of another....

This video shows the uncompromising side of "survival of the fittest" - a male barn owl - not the father of the chicks (he disappeared from the scene - reason unknown - a few weeks earler) had been hanging around in the tree each night gradually being more and more bold, and was intent on posession of the box as a roost, and probably trying to court the female in the process.
He entered the nest the night BEFORE this video, but was quickl put off - see "Fiesty Chick" video.
Just 24 hours later he is back and this time is determined to "get rid" of the two chicks - which are not his.
The tenacity of the chicks (about 5/6 weeks old) is remarkable, but there is no way the inevitable can be avoided, and both are killed.
(As the video ends you might spot that one is still breathing very weakly, but within an hour or so it was all over...)

In the animal kingdom, most of the time, there is no such a thing as adopting someone from a different blood, male see other babies that isn't his as competition, also, if you are a female and your baby's got killed, you'll still want to survive and pass down your gens, so out of desperation, you might find yourself mate with the killer male, and that's exactly what he wanted

Like most animals, the male wants to mate with the female, but if she has chicks from another dude, they must go. The female will eventually submit and mate with the new male and have more chicks. I’ve seen nature docs with male Lions doing the same thing. Sad but true😢

They almost never fight to the death, they understand sunk cost fallacy far better then most human, and they almost never waste resources. if they did something it is almost always for a reason, and almost always produce a better result then the average human choices.

They have extra down feathers to keep them warm while the parents hunt, but also they are FAT from being stuffed food every day without the exercise of flight. When they're close to fledging, they lose a lot of weight because they exercise their wings and get fed less to encourage them to leave.
