This video shows the uncompromising side of "survival of the fittest" - a male barn owl - not the father of the chicks (he disappeared from the scene - reason unknown - a few weeks earler) had been hanging around in the tree each night gradually being more and more bold, and was intent on posession of the box as a roost, and probably trying to court the female in the process.
He entered the nest the night BEFORE this video, but was quickl put off - see "Fiesty Chick" video.
Just 24 hours later he is back and this time is determined to "get rid" of the two chicks - which are not his.
The tenacity of the chicks (about 5/6 weeks old) is remarkable, but there is no way the inevitable can be avoided, and both are killed.
(As the video ends you might spot that one is still breathing very weakly, but within an hour or so it was all over...)
