Fun morbid owl fact: Did you know that owls lay their eggs a few days apart rather than all at once like most birds? That's why why the chicks are all different sizes. They do this because if the parent hasn't come back with food (because they can't fly in the rain), then the biggest one can eat the smallest one. Then if they still haven't come back, then he can eat the next smallest one. Edit: They don’t eat their siblings on purpose but rather have shit short distance eyesight. On a normal day, the parent comes back with food and dangles it over the nest for them to eat, and all the chicks rush forward to get the food, with the biggest chick getting the most food and leaving the scraps for the others. Therefore, the biggest chick gets stronger, while the smaller chicks get weaker. (something like only 25% make it through the 1st year). Now they have amazing long-distance vision, but basically no short distance vision so they can’t really see what they’re eating, but they just feel that it’s fluffy (eg. A mouse). So when the day comes that the parents can’t return with food, the chicks still expect food, and the bigger ones feel that there’s something fluffy around him and eats their sibling (thinking it’s the food their parents brought them).

For those wondering why the owls aren't like raining havoc on the pigeon: it's a really confined space, and their first concern is their offsprings, the pigeon doesn't seem really agressive... Owl are not the best fighters, especialy on the ground, they hunt by dropping on their prey with speed, mostly using their ability to see thru the dark, and the fact that their feathers glide thru the air with absolute silence (so it's more like stealth assassination, and not fighting), plus, like all birds, they are really fragile, so fighting to death in a box with a pigeon isn't really what they are looking for.
@Drachenhannes2 жыл бұрын
One of the young was appearantly trampled to death. At 3:43 owl mom stepped on it's head and it didn't get up afterwards. You see some leg movement and after some more kicks it ceases to move at all. So fighting more aggressively would have most likely caused all of her offsprings to die.

I love how the dad is so confused and scared, backed away in the corner and coming in and out a few times without doing anything, kind of accepting it but at the same time being scared. Then the mum comes in and is ready to tussle straight away.
@jeupater14292 жыл бұрын
Male didn't seem scared, just confused. Male owl instincts are probably tilted more towards providing food. Notice how he returns multiple times with larger prey. While I'd bet that Female owl instincts in comparison have stronger proclivities towards protecting the nest. Consider that if the offspring die, it will be very difficult for the female to endure pregnancy again. It's a large investment for the female.

Idk who to feel sorry for. The Owls having a pigeon intrude into their home and lays an egg. Or the pigeon that lays an egg in the nest and struggles to get out. And eventually leaves her egg behind.

@dwanrobinson Жыл бұрын
Its possible that thos pigeons used to use that nesting spot yearly. They come back and barn owls have moved in. Shes so tired from giving birth she just wants to rest but the owl is attacking her. Crazy how confusing nature can be.
