End Of An Era As RAF's Tristar Fleet Retires | Forces TV

After 30 years of service, the RAF's fleet of Lockheed Tristar transport aircraft has officially retired. The type has been a mainstay for the RAF both in ferrying troops around the world and also for in-flight refuelling operations. It is being replaced by the new Voyager plane.

The TriStar is the most underrated aircraft ever. Three engines always !!!!!!!

I flew on the L-1011 many times as a F/A crew member with Eastern Airlines from 1976 to 1989 out of all the aircraft we had, this was by far my most favorite out the the whole fleet hands down far superior to the DC-10 in so many ways. I loved the sound of those RB-211 engines on takeoff and in cruise, just a well built machine.

My mother flew on the L1011 tristar RAF from Norton to Falklands with a stop at ascension. She was based at the falklands and also worked on HMS invincible. Incredible aircraft

End of November 1991, my dad being an officer in the Navy got me on a flight to Bermuda. The purpose of the flight was to transfer a wounded soldier back to the UK. It was an epic experience and I loved the sound of those RB211s. 30 years of service with the RAF alone is remarkable. I later learned Dad could have got us all as a family on many of the RAF flights due to being in the forces. Dad had already travelled the world due to his career so wasn't interested doing vacation as a family. I have a soft spot for the Tristar and always will.

Spent three happy years flying that, comfy and quiet once they'd removed the AAR Probe lights !!

Flying on the second leg to the Falklands in 97, our TriStar suddenly dropped from the sky. The pilot nosed the aircraft down to gain some speed and then performed a perfect loop de loop followed by a victory roll. After regaining control, he strolled magnificently down the isle with slight smile of British satisfaction, twiddling his handlebar moustache to cheers of hip hip hooray from 'the lads'. I made that second bit up, he just switched on the back up auto pilot and everything was fine.

I belive a few are being made airworthy to be sent to the states for refueling contracts

That plan fell through and they have all been scrapped in GB where they were in storage to make room for unsold cars.
