I loved Future Music - even won an Akai Sampler in one of their comps in the late 90s! I sold my old copies and wish I hadn’t as I’m now on eBay collecting all the cool hardware I wanted but couldn’t afford back in the day. Magazines were a monthly dose of inspiration to keep you excited about your hobby. And pretty girls on the cover for no reason - just so symbolic of happier times.

Same. What made those days so cool was the fact that I was constricted by a lack of funds. It drove me to be more creative. Although it sounds counteractive, constraint is the mother of invention.

I can't believe it happened! I remember buying Amiga Format and was heartbroken when every one Amiga magazine shuts down. I remember looking for printed copies each month with less and less pages... When Amiga Format shuts down I was jealous watching Computer & Future Music going on... I never imagined there will be the end...!?

I couldn't afford Fullsail, so magazines were my audio school. Mix, EQ, Keyboard, Computer, Future, Sound on Sound and later Scratch were my staples. Seeing a new edition in a bookstore or at the airport felt like finding gold. I learned so much about gear, production and mix techniques and how to manage artists in the studio. I still have a whole stack of magazines in my bookshelf in my bedroom.

I loved the magazine when I was learning production from 2000 to 2012 or so and had honed my skills. I still have every print issue and all the CD/DVDs for that entire period. Have tons of those samples ripped to hard drives and in folders as the media drives were removed from generations of PCs. I still refer back to a few of the issues when there is a production technique or genre I want to emulate. Gradually, as workstations like the Fantom and Kronos - alongside samplers like my MPC X have expanded their sounds sets and capabilities I used less and less of that material. There is just not enough time to consume all the information without being paralyzed by the options to learn. Great vid.

I collected those magazines for the cd samples. I only had an upgraded Yamaha A3000 sampler to work with, I loved that thing. I'd had enough of sampling My 12" dance vinyls (to death) so the cd's were very useful for a while. I gave up eventually. 20 plus years later lockdown had me spending my little rainy day money on a synth to get me through it. Today, I am no synth wizard by any stretch, but my home studio is now more than adequate. A dream fulfilled. Bless those magazines back then, I still own my Yamaha A3000...

Wow wasn't aware so FM reached so many people - although it makes sense - man, what an era, 90s, getting samples, I still have sample libraries from those days. I still have Akai S3200 and S1100, and no matter it takes a minute to process samples, the workflow and the result for me is usually more inspiring and focused than using software samplers. I have modern hardware samplers too but there is something in making music on Atari running old Cubase, JV1080, TX81z and Akai samplers. Both Computer Music and Future Music were rare tutorials and some things I learnt to do then I am still doing now in the same way, 25 years later. It was so important for me because obviously there was no internet, and it was way harder to get to know and understand the tools and processes. I have heaps of these magazines, will hold on to them!

Even before that era there was Computer Music Journal that was mainly exploring the possibility to use computers to make music. I remember the impact of the article from John Chowning in 74 describing the FM synthesis before he sold his patents to Yamaha ( only 10 years after the invention of the voltage controlled oscillator by bob Moog). The idea that it would be possible generate real time digital complex sound was mind boggling!

While we see massive changes in the music industry at an accelerated pace there are a couple of things that have not changed: People love listening to music, even more though if it is performed live. Even AI cannot substitute creativity. People are more empowered to make music than they ever were. Art is not necessary to survive, so it never was easy to make money with art. Any kind of art as sole source of income always was a gamble. Nobody is fighting over making music, but over who is making money with music. The limiting factor changed from 'who owns the studios' to 'who owns the distribution platforms'. Overall I am happy that my creativity is no limited by access to technology anymore. If my productions don't sound good, it is me and not my equipment ;-)

Wow, I was just looking for the latest issues of both this last weekend in sadly the only big bookstore we have left, Barnes and Noble .... I was about to do a year subscription... 🤦🏿‍♂️ I used to pick them up here and there 20 years ago but Im a drummer/percussionist mostly for work. I lived in Japan for 6 years through 2010 and the quality of info packed magazines with dvd's/audio files there was amazing. Future music and computer music and one of the UK published drum mags was the next best thing. Since 2017 or so, I got an interface and started learning how to record through a DAW, gain staging, micing and everything. Definitely have a synth itch that I'll soon be scratching outside of the DAW. Ive learned so much from both especially through the pandemic to now

Great video! A few years ago I was rummaging around a spare room looking for a box of CD submissions my small label received in the early 00s when I stumbled upon my collection of old CDs and DVDs from these magazines. In fact, my weird tune Pink Alien Skeletons, inspired by SETI and the record we sent in to space in the 1970s, was made exclusively from samples from the CDs I found. Well except for the "news" samples and the scratch. Again, great video!

Future music has always been a source of information that I have used many times. Maybe it can make a comeback like some of the retro computer mags of the 90s in more recent years. I buy two mags for a computer that has been out of production 30+ years and the mags died 25+ years ago but in the last few years they have made a comeback one is even available in stores. The community needs to come together and make that decision.

I bought my first CM in 2006, at the same time realising the existence of VSTs. I was using Madtracker 2 at the time, and found out that there had been a release in 2005 that could run VST instruments in Madtracker version 2.6, so it didn’t take long for me to get a bunch of VSTS and started tracking with the new software, I had 1 1/2 hour train ride too and back from work every day, so with my trusty laptop, and a copy of CM in the backpack I took full advantage of those hours, even some times on the 10 minute buss drives from the station and home haha, even missed a stop one time. I began subscribing in 2008 and that lasted about 2 years until I decided to pause with the magazine, and only occasionally buy it in the shop. It saddened me that they changed the format to online download instead of the disc but, hey times has to change.

Future Music samples were like the dream! Gear wasn't affordable back then, and not easy to find at a dealer or even order. Those samples were for sure used in countless known tracks of the time, not just synth stuff but also vocals. It was also inspiring to see the real life struggles that top producers had with their gear, and how much that resonated on a much smaller scale with my bedroom studio production!

I enjoy spending time in bookstores and reading the music mags, both of which which are becoming scarce as time goes on. I have a pile of Computer Music and Future Music mags, and their associated CDs as far back as the 90s. Before then it was Keyboard and Musician mags in the 80s, Synapse in the late 70s. I fondly recall an issue of Rolling Stone from the mid 70s that had a feature story on guitar pedals that changed my life. Sad news - I used to collect them back in the 90s and might have some copies somewhere? Though I did get rid of a lot at one point.

I recall seeing issue one on sale in '98. It was five quid, and rather slim. decided I couldn't afford it. Reached for SOS instead. Sttarted buying CM a few months later. Still have a stack in the corner of this room i'm currently haunting.

Electronic music definately wasnt mainstream in the 90s. Sure you had slots on the radio or mtv dedicated to the groving scene but it was mainly rock and hip hop that dominated. Late 90s bulletinboards and forums were melting pot for underground music nerds like myself. So yes, before that, getting info was only possible by reading future music or CM or by hanging out with other producers who you met at the local gearshop. Best time of my life! Will miss these magazines ❤

I stopped buying them 20+ years ago ... in late 90s, they were one of my sources for samples and even first VST plugins. Future Publishing did great job with these titles.

I was featured one month in their ‘reader’s studios’ series, was such an exciting thing to do.. had a three or four page feature, they sent a photographer round etc. This would’ve been about 2003 I think?

They put my music in their pages. CM and FM were both excellent publications. I think those magazines were right up there with SoS. However, they opened up a whole new world with their plugins, samples and, of course, New Artists!

Is there a resource where all the samples, videos, tutorials etc. are hosted? Should there be?

I sold about 100 CM mags for about $10 about 5 years ago. They were hard to get rid of! Not that I didn't see the value but they sat in a pile unread cluttering up space.

The biggest problem I had with FM was they -always- loved gear that had adverts in the magazine. I even wrote to the editor pointing this out and, at the time, the editor was brand new and actually agreed with me, saying that was one big thing they were working on to change... So, not very reliable reviews.

I discovered Computer Music, Future Music and Music Tech when I was stationed in England back in 2005. I loved all three! They were fantastic resources for people making electronic music. I even ended up writing for Music Tech for a few years. Now, sadly, they’re all ONLINE ONLY. 😢 At least I managed to get the issues that I had articles in. Oh, and I have SO many software and sample Cover Discs that’s it’s not even funny. So sad that magazines like these are dying.
